November 2009-Starting Chemo

Hi Joanne- I have done a bit of reading on soya since I put the original comment on our discussion board- the most recent research summary seems to say that although soya has lots of great anti-cancer properties, for estrogen sensitive breast cancer it is not a good idea- so I have stopped having it- including tofu. Almond milk is fab though- I have been making gorgeous waffles with it- morning noon and night
and have also put on 4kgs in weight- wonder if the two things are related ?
-
Hi Alicia- So are any of the 4 wigs- long and glamarous ??- sounds like that is what you need. i have a short bob wig which I plan on wearing day to day, to the gym etc and a lovely long one for when I want to feel like a film star
still holding on to my own straw like locks at the moment though
-
BrendaSharron - its hard to understand but I will be having treatment every week. The Abraxane is every week, every single week. The Avastine is everyother week. Treatment length is undetermined. As long as the lymph node is shrinking and the tumors shrink, we will continue. In about two months I will have another pet ct scan and we will re-evaluate. If it is working, we wil continiue, if it is not, then we have to find another teatment plan or radiation maybe.
1st treatment down yesturday! Got a bunch of pre-meds, steriod, atavan, aloxi, emmend and then my chemo drugs. A few friends came my to visit. And I feel fine today. I'm also taking cough medicine for this unexplained cough. Doc says just take this cough med and wait and see what the chemo does. I think it was from my biopsy that I have the cough. I take emmend, reglan, and zofran at home for the nausea. I learned this the hard way during ACT so this is my chemo cocktail stated above. I didnt get it right until the 3rd or 4th cycle. Let me know if I can help any ACT girls!
Thanks for the welcome!

Hi- just spent ages catching up with your posts- I do look forward to putting a bit of time aside to catch up with you all. My daughter is shouting that she needs me to go and help her find her tutu for a gig that she is going to.... hubby is asking what time I would like dinner... but I am not moving till I have caught up with you girls.
Mum2two your photo is beautiful, like you Ccani I need to work out how to add a pic.
Welcome Phillipa in Thailand- wow Brenda when you started this group did you expect such an international group of women? A very special group of women !!!!!!
Joanne how hilarious was that comment about the flower and yuor husband !!!
Melinda sounds like you are having a bit of a tought time- i hope that as the days go on you come back stronger than ever. I am stage iiic too and just keeping only positive thougths and directions in my mind and day to day life. It can be a challenge though- this morning I was in my pjjamas and being sick-in the bathroom- with a really bad headache (still)- but was determined to meet up with my friends for a two hour bike ride and I made it !!!!! was a bit drugged up with the painkillers and felt like I was flying never mind riding a bike- was pleased. Have spent the afternoon relaxing- and enjoying day 10 of my cycle- as a few of you have said it is nice to feel chemo free
Just to update you on my plan for wearing a back less- bra less ball gown last night- I managed to get 'the girls' to line up ok- (one old droopy, one new tissue expander)-just used a bit of body tape to stick my dress down to my saggy boob- so less cleavage showed on that side. In tracksuit now- so no body tape needed.
Will try the clarytin recommendation next cycle of neupogen- thanks for the tip .
Happy Weekend to you all xxx

Good morning ladies.
Melinda, sorry about the staging but you will get through this and we are here to help you.
Today at 2:00 I go wig shopping. I got a prescription for a "cranial prosthesis" from my onc but he did not follow through with a pre-authorization, so this one comes out of my pocket. I may just end up looking - we'll see. If I'm going to have to wear one, I'm going to have fun with it! Maybe I'll be a blonde for the first time ever!
-
Hello, fellow warriors! Hope everyone who had a tx this week is feeling well and strong. Major{{hugs}} to Melinda, BrendaSharon, Cafelovr, Coolbreeze and anyone else who needs one -- hugs are always free.
A few of you ladies have asked about the allergic reaction to the Taxotere...believe me, you know something is up the minute it kicks in! The first tx, they gave me IV steroids but no Bendryl before. within a few seconds of the Taxotere drip starting, my chest started to tighten, then my face turned beet red. Then my lower back and hip muscles "seized up" --- that was what really hurt! DH yelled for the nurse to come back and everyone came running. They pushed a Bendryl injection thrugh my IV, and gradually everything subsided. This time around, I took extra steroids the night before, they added a Bendyrl drip and I still had some of the muscle pain. One Bendryl push took it away almost immediately, though. So now we know to tell the nurse to stay close and keep an eye on me. No problems as all with the Cytoxan.
Besides that, I am having a fairly easy time of it. No problems with smells or tastes, my nails are fine, and I've had to take anti-nausea meds only two days out of the three weeks. No neuropathy yet, either, knock on wood. My onc says because my wbc count stayed up last time, he doesn't need to see me between treatments. So barring any issues, I am on my own until my next tx!
We went to the mall today for the first time since I lost my hair, and that was a little strange. I felt a bit conspicious in my scarf (cool white bandana with sequins from headcovers.com), but you know what? If people want to stare, let 'em. I will wear my baldness (well, covered with a scarf or hat...I'm not THAT bold yet!) proudly as a WARRIOR!
-
Thanks for the support guys, I was just being whiny this morning.
Went to work, went to a wig store (couldn't find anything that didn't look silly).
Someone at work reminded me not to pee on the grass once I start chemo! Her dad used to whiz outside and killed all her mom's plants! I don't pee outside unless I am camping, which is like, never. But that was good info to have. I may start using "homemade" weedkiller!
-
hi my fellow princesses
thanks for your support the other day - it was lovely
I ussually just try and get n wih it but i think too many things were gong on that day and i was a bit crumbly.
Well the good news is that I can change one frowny face to one smiley face (or wht about a green smiley face whch turns gradually to its yellow colour aftr a few days.
So 2 down and 6 to go, though i realise that change regime afer four.
warm wishes and smiles to you all, we are all warrior princesses with wimpy, wobbly moments
philippa
PS i have posted this in the october thread too as i seem to have adopted both months - so i am the lucky one as i share with so many more of you

Good morning, November sisters,'
I didn't post yesterday because I didn't feel well. I am really disappointed because I thought I had this figure out -- days 3-6 would be tought, but the rest doable. I am not drinking 64 fluid ounces, but I am up approachiing 48. Plus my eyes feel funny -- kind of puffy. Today I feel better, but I am taking it easy and not trying to do much.
Yesterday I got my hair cut to about 3/4 inch with a little more on top. I also bought a new lint roller. It actually doesn't look bad. But the hairdresser reminded me that hair sometimes comes back differently than what you had before. That's too bad as I like my hair.
Melinda, so sorry about the news. This is like a rollercoaster. Hope this chemo kicks butt with your glowing nodes.
Have a good day, everyone.
Shelley
-
Shel ~ I too had the puffy eyes feeling felt like my head was going to explode. It then turned into a headache. Take some sudafed or claritin to see if it helps. I am glad today finds you feeling a bit better. Try to rest and yup drink your water. I have a hard time too but do know if I drink as much as I can I do feel better.
I think I have 2 more days with hair. I hear right after round 2 it starts? is that true girls?
(((((HUGS)))))))

Just checking in- glad to read that everyone doing ok. Done a bit of Christmas shopping today- was just looking for a friend's birthday pressie then saw all of these great things for everyone else. Have decided to put together 'treat hampers' for all my friends -so different size ones -for individuals, couples, families- I have just bought heaps of the same lovely things- and will build them up. Thought it might be a time saving idea for all of you- my lovely new friends- since we have quite a lot to do at the moment.
LOVE TO YOU ALL XXX

Morning Warrors.
I went wig shopping yesterday. I intended to buy something close to my style and color, but couldn't find a thing. (My hair is burgundy and shoulder length, which is long as it will go.)
Instead, I bought this wild, rock-looking pure black wig that goes almost down to my waist. Why not? My original, long ago hair color was black (my eyebrowns are still black) and I've always wanted long hair. Now is my chance!
I'll get a more realistic one down the road.
Hope you are all doing well with your chemo treatments - I still have 17 days to go.
-
Brenda,
My 2nd treatment will be on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, 11/25.
Thanks for keeping up with the smilies!
-
I am getting TCH every three weeks for 6 cycles, with weekly Herceptin in between TCH treatments. First treatment was November 12, next TCH scheduled for December 3.
Got my hair cut short day before treatment and I like the way it looks.Have lots of hats and scarves being made for me and sent my way but haven't yet decided on whether a wig is the right choice for me. Glad to have found this site.
-
Coolbreeze, glad you got a fun wig. I have a few wigs. 4 so far. Wore one out to dinner the other night to give it a test drive. Saw someone that does not know I have BC. He said I look amazing. I said oh you should only know. LOL There are some great wigs online. Check out the sites. I find Rene of Paris has some great hair styles. 2 of my wigs are those. I got a monofilament wig online, it was 320 in the store, I found it brand new online for 150 with shipping and handling. Ok I'm rambling.
Welcome Deedee... Hope you are feeeling good.
I am dreading TX #2 tomorrow of A C .. ugh ~~
-
Good Morning Girls,
My best wishes for you all. I sent away yesterday for some head grips, caps, & a scarf with a sun visor. Just waiting around to go for my Education Session at the hospital this afternoon. I went to the chemist the other day and stocked up on some things on the recommended list. You know perfume free moisturiser, eye drops, mouth wash, & bum wipes.
Just trying my best to prepare myself.
-
Having a fair amount of anxiety tonight, I don't know why I am psyching myself out so bad. I have done scary things before, I jumped out of an airplane, for fun!
I think it is the fact that chemo will screw up my denial thing I have going on. I think of myself as a "surgical patient", not a "cancer patient". I guess starting chemo will mess up my little delusion.
-
Hi everyone! Just got finished reading a TON of posts, trying to catch up! I got all my meds...Neurontin (the onc thinks this is the best thing for hot flashes, since I can't take anything estrogen related. He said my hot flashes were going to be rough.); Reglan; Emla; Zofran. He said he would give me Vicodin if the Neulasta shots bothered me. Could someone tell me the exact time to take Claritan...the night before the shot or the evening of the shot? How exactly does it help?
I was all gung-ho for chemo to start, but now I'm starting to get nervous. I'm just trying to remember this stuff is going to save my life. My biggest thing is getting my chemo bag ready. It's a start! I didn't get the mouthwash...$9 for Biotene?! I read somewhere to mix 1 tsp of MofMag, 1 tsp of baking soda, and 2 tsp of water. Use that as a swish before and after eating. I did have date night with hubby last night. It felt good to laugh over chicken wings! I'll miss my regular foods
But you all would be so proud of me...I've switched to "lite" coffee.
CoolBreeze: Awesome hair! It was fun when I was trying on wigs. I tried every color and length I could find. One things for certain...I am NOT a blond! Brunettes definitely have more fun
Anamary: Congrats on your first treatment! You are very brave!
Shel: I hope you fell better soon! Someday this will all be worth it! They will find a cure for this cancer. And we will be the warriors to throw it in the trash!
God bless, and love to all!
-
Hugs to everyone.
I am new here, so be patient with me. Had 1st chemo last Wed Nov 11. First day and a half I felt wonderful. Took neulasta shot and that afternoon, it felt like my body shut down on me. I was dizzy, weak, nauseated, had headache all at once. I thought I was dying. this lasted about 30 minutes and then that part was over. This started about 1 hr after neulasta. Had awful nausea until yesterday (saturday). Now I feel great again, did anyone else have a reaction like this?
1 down 7 to go. 4 epirubicin & cytoxin (spelling?) every 2 weeks, then 4 taxotere every 2 weeks. Then 35 rads.
-
Hi Everyone,
Found out today what I'll be getting - AC every 3 wks x 6TX, then 30 rads (5 per wk x 6wks)
Had my first cry at the hospital today, maybe because I went alone and didn't need to keep up appearances. The poor girl only asked me if I had false teeth or glasses, nothing to do with chemo.
The Chemo nurse gave me the big rundown on SEs and gave me a tour of the chemo ward. I was glad it was late and no one was there. I handled that ok, just goes to show you don't know what will set you off.
Thinking of you all -- THURSDAY is 1st "Chemo" day
-
Melinda and Susan, good luck today. After this first treatment, the uncertainty will be over and you will have a better understanding about what this is all about. We will be thinking of you.
Omarsmom, welcome to the November Warrior/Wimp/Princesses - whatever label fits today. You will find this group so supportive. Great news that you are already one down.
I am feeling much better today. I consumed about a gallon of water yesterday. I will try some sudafed as the ibuprofen isn't taking care of it totally.
Have a good day everyone.
-
Melinda... I can so relate to the chemo putting an end to the denial of the dreaded "c" word. It was very much the same for me. I now have to pull myself up from the boot straps many days and stop the pity party. THIS too shall pass. Wishing you luck today, you will feel better once you have the fear of the unknown gone. It isn't all that bad. Thinking of you and SUSAN you too. it will be 1 down ~~
Cafelovr ~ I took the Claritin right when I got home from receiving the Neulasta shot and 24 hrs later. And I paid 11 bucks for the darn Biotene and am finding good old warm salt water does the trick. At least I have the Biotene just incase. I do use it sometimes. Whatever my mouth is in the mood for. *USUALLY a brownie.
Glad you had date night with HUBBY and shared a few laughs. Thinking of u.
Omarsmom, sorry you felt so crappy but glad you are on the upswing. My last Neulasta shot I took the Claritin 24 hrs as soon as I got home and the next day. I wasn't too bad. I had bad headaches and a backache 1 week that had me moving slowly for a few days.
Kayh, you will find a great source of wisdom and support here. Sorry about your tears, it is normal. Let them flow when you feel the need. I think I have probably filled a large swimming pool thus far.
TX # 2 this afternoon.... I dread it but am glad I know what to expect. I am wondering if the SE's will start to get worse as it builds up in my system. I guess I will find out soon enough.
Good day my Warriors and well those that are feeling Whimpy too.
(((((HUGS))))))

JustmeAlicia, Susan62, Melinda41 Thinking of you today hope all goes well.

Ladies, You are in my thoughts! CCnani, you and I are together on this one! I will be thinking of you tomorrow. I go at 9:30 a.m. Get a good nights sleep, and we'll catch up later! Remember...Water Water Water. then coffeee (ha ha), then Water Water Water!

-
Good luck today JustmeAlicia, Susan62, & Melinda41! Each of you will be in my thoughts and prayers today.
-
Good Morning fellow Warrior Princess,
You all are so lovely today, GREAT NEW LOOKS!!!!!!!
I still am dizzy and so this will be brief. I'll do the updates and welcomes but just too weak to stay on long. BUT, I love all y'all!!!!
I'm loving all the new looks i'm seeing with all the smiles upon your faces. We have come far since this month began! I'm sooooo proud of each and every one of you ladies. Congrats to each!!
Thank you everyone on board for welcoming our New Comers
Omarsmom7 & deedee22,
Each of these lady's has already had their first TX. I've added to the header above their TX, etc.
So glad you found us, the girls are a great source of knowledge as well it's a wonderful thing to go through this with those who are sharing the same emotions, side effects, etc. So feel free to scream, cry rant rave and laugh sometimes too. We are all in this together.
Omarsmom7,
Isee that your having nausea the first 3 days! Have they given you anything for this. Most of us girls have tried to request the "Emend" If you have not been prescribed this medicine, you may want to ask or (DEMAND) it. It is the Cadillac of nausea medicine. Trust me it's GREAT!!! I don't get Nuelasta so I can't help there, but I know the other girls can & will help any way possible!! Sorry you're feeling under the weather!!
I understand!!!~~~~~
deedee22
It's a hard choice to make with hats and scarves and wigs. I cut my hair the day of my first TX and sent it off to (Hip-Hat-Hair) and had my own hair made into a piece that i can wear any hat I want to with. It then at least has my OWN hair hanging down. It came back in two weeks. I love it. My grown up boys where really happy to see my own hair on my head, they where too funny. My 36 yr old son worried more about my hair, than I did myself. When I'm not wearing my hair & hats I just get comfortable at home with just the naked head. My DH loves me no matter what.
mommy2two & JustmeAlicia, LOVE the Look!!!!!!!
Melinda & Susan,
Good luck today girls, I truly hope like for so many of us this day will put an end to the sheer "Terror" we all feel before our first "Chemo TX" Please know, all our hearts are with you both!!
Ccnani & Kaya,
Your turns are finally here tomorrow!!!! I wish you both as above the same. Got to say though you all have the most experience to go on with all the posting from through out the month. I hope they have been enjoyable as well as informative. I hope you day goes smoothly for both of you too!!!
CoolBreeze,
So great to hear you will take up a December Tread for the girls. It started really slow for November so don't be fooled. Give it a smidge of time and they will pour in. I wish there where not so many pouring in as the past couple of months, because that means that many more women are affected. We truly need a cure soon for this "Nightmare on -C- Street"
SomeDay,SomeWay-A-C-Cure
(((((HUGS))))) to all Brenda
-
AroninMia DUDETTE,
I Love it!!! you are sooo much like me it is hilarious~!!!!~~~~~ Do you know how long it's been since I was called Dudette?? Brought me back to my motorcycle days. Back when I rode dirt bikes with all the guys. So all the guys starting calling me dudette. If they rode I rode!! I was a sexy chic but still hung out with the guys. Me and John have been together since then 30 years ago!!!
Thanks for the fun memories!!!!
-
BrendaSharon, did the onc say why you are still dizzy?
Welcome to Omarsmom.
Good luck to the women having their chemo today.
So many are getting headaches. My biggest fear.
I am saving all my imitrex for chemo days.
This morning, I have another dentists appointment. I was told to make sure my teeth were in good shape, and I have a dental phobia and hadn't been in 8 years. With good reason - 8 years ago I ended up in the hospital due to a dental procedure! Well, I went and he got my lingual nerve, so my tongue has been dead since then. Now I have to go back today and tomorrow to get some new vaneers. I'm so freaked. This will be the last time I EVER go to the dentist.
-
Hey Cool Breeze!
I don't know anything yet!! I'm sooooo frustrated that every time I call I get a machine. Leave a message. The RN said if I was dizzy to be sure and let her know. So, I explained this when I called the office today (speaking to the operator at the office at first) and she said "Please Hold" and then just switched me over to the voice mail again for my onc's RN. Pissed me off, I'm not calling back. Screw it! I'll see them on Thursday anyways. Do you know that I was so wrapped up in everyone else's TX 1st and 2nd, I FORGOT, My 2nd TX is this Thursday. I hate answering machines. It sucks you don't get to talk to people anymore, just f#%$@&^g recordings and machines.
Ya try to be good and not pester but this is what you get, just fricking ignored. I just want to scream because I'm angry!!!
Tired of this crap every time I try to call this office.
So Sorry all I needed to vent, I feel like crying!!!
~~~~~ If I get worse, then their bad, not mine.
I sure hope everyone else gets better responses from their oncologist office.
-
