pol- turn pink in week one or two?
Hello fellow sufferers, both current and past. I wanted to find out who of you is or has turned pink with your radiation during your first or 2nd week. I turned pink on day two. I put lily of the desert aloe vera gel, on and it helped, but would turn pink again after a few hours. My breast feels sore and irritated inside and outside. I am quite concerned, as I am told that it is rare to turn pink this early. Did anyone else turn pink this early, but not get any worse down the road? Want to hear your experiences, and what you think did or would have helped to make it better. I look forward to hearing what you all have to share.

I got a little pink week one. It was subtle, only I could see it. The skin was also warm to the touch, like I had a fever. I had mild pain, like the breast ache of a period. The second week I must have been into the "tanning" phase, as I saw no real changes. Inside pretty much stopped hurting. Skin still felt warm to the touch. I was more sore the first week than the second.
Since about day 10 I have significant swelling. I have gained about 2 lbs of fluid. I saw my rad doctor yesterday and she said it was the swelling causing pressure causing the pain. I'm not sure if that's the whole story, but it must be part of it; because I have pain even in areas that are not being irradiated due to the fluid buildup, like under the arm and around to the back. Pain is probably too strong a word, should be "ache". Still feels warm. I have occasional twinges when exercising, mostly when gravity changes the breast position.
At about day 13 I suddenly had this tan/pink colored "Square" on me. It is now getting a bit darker daily. Now I am having pain again, still very much like a period. I should probably cut down on coffee, which is famous for aggravating the lymph nodes and impacting drainage. I used to deal with that during my period by taking vit E. Since I can't take that now, ache it does. Aleve and ibuprofen help that, about 50%. I don't want to be on them around the clock, so I take either one after the treatment (midday) when I am most sore. By morning it is a lot better.
I am using the same brand of aloe gel. I find it soothes, but does nothing for the color. Skin still feels hot. Some say here to refrigerate the bottle, so it's cold when you put it on. It's cold here, so I find it shocking enough to apply it at room temperature.
How many treatments have you had?
Hope this helps.

I never got pink nor did I burn. I just turned a toasty brown. Lasted about 2 years, and now, both boobs look identical, can't even find the lumpectomy scar.

I am on day 21 of 33 whole breast radiation (last 4 will be boosts to surgical cavity) and just turned "splotch" pinkish today. Rad onc told me to start mixing aquaphor into the 100% pure aloe I have been using.

I was an abberation -- after 2 treatments I was lobster red!! Beet red!!! Around my incisions and more delicate skin at my collarbone I got toasty brown too that eventually cracked and kinda chipped off. Luckily no blisters. I slathered on that cream they gave me immediately after being zapped and a couple of more times during the day. The red went away quickly after the rads finished though. Fatigue happened the last 2 weeks. Otherwise, a walk in the park! :-)
Edit to add: I also got these little dots, sort of looked like black heads (yuck, I know). I think it was just dead skin trapped in pores. Yuck again. But it eventually disappeared.

Hi Linn,
So sorry to hear about the swelling with 2lbs of fluid! ouch! I had fluid build uo after my re excision. That was so painful. I pray that it subsides quickly!
besides the aloe vera gel, I am using the cream they gave me to use. It is called, "Bard special care cream." They sell it at CVS. I had to ask the pharmacist about it though, because they didn't have it on display. He says it is a special order. They told me that I needed to use that lotion "because" of the vitamins in it, that I would need down the road. It has vitamins A, B5, D, and E. They told me I could only take a multi vitamin, but apparently they feel getting it from the cream is different.
Today will be treatment #9. What treatment # are you on?
Hello Shirlann
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm glad you did so well!
Hi Linda,
Hope the aloe and aquaphor mix works well for you.
Konakat!
So sorry to hear about turning beat red on day 2! I would have been petrified to go back again! What kind of cream did they give you to use? Glad to hear it went away after your treatments. How long did it take for the fatigue to go away?

The nurse gave me this little tub of Aquaphor. Never heard of it before but I guess it worked. It's all coming back to me -- I remember my onc saying that if you're on Herceptin when you get rads you can sometimes (rarely) get a beet red boob, but it's not dangerous. She consulted with the rad onc and the pharmacist and they said don't worry. So I didn't. :-)
The fatigue took a few months to go away I'm sorry to say. I think it was a combo of all the chemo, rads, and emotional drain. Hit me like a brick wall during rads towards the end, but it was nice to be at the end. Some breeze through treatment, some don't, and everything in between is experienced. But don't worry if you start to feel tired. I managed to work through the whole thing so it's doable. Just remember to get the energy to celebrate like h*ell when it's all over!!!!
Oh yeah, Aquaphor is a bit greasy so don't wear your best bra/camisole/whatever.
Oh yeah (again) my boob swelled a bit too, not really noticable.

I am interested in this thread because I am shrinking. I have had 11/30 rads treatments. My radiated breast is shrinking.. Down from a D cup to a C. Lots of tenderness and shooting pains at times, but no redness...

I had a mastectomy right side in April. Finished #19 of 33 today and today just noticed red/dark pink coloring over entire area being radiated. I have 3 weeks left, hoping it won't get too painful before I am done.

I turned pink and it felt like a bit like micorwave popcorn LOL. I could feel the effect on the inside even before I saw it on the outside. I recommend that you keep putting on the creme several times during the day, wear only cotton to sleep and wear a soft bra like the "barely there" brand that you can buy at Kohl's. If you are having burning this early, watch it carefully. There are perscription treatments to avoid breakdown. I did not need them. I got pretty pink but never really suffered much. I took pain meds like advil if I felt uncomfortable at night. Of course, check with your doctor.
Good luck. It will be over before you know it!

Thanks, Poetjanet - I hope so too! Getting a little "itchy" now too. Only 10 left!
