I had a lumpectomy and radiation for DCIS. Has anyone taken Tamoxifin for prevention of a future ER PR + BC?

I chose to forgo the tamox. The insert that comes with it says " if you have dcis discuss the side effects vs the benfits", That was enough for me., I am 43 ans since I am going to be monitored, the percentage of it helping is low. But it is your choice. If you read bottle o tamoxifen thread they are all about taking it and it also depends on the type of cancer. Check out Bessies posts. She is very informative and she also decided not to take the tamoxifen. They tote this drug as a "estrogen" blocker but it is a chemotherapy drug. I personally think it would do more damage than good. I asked nurses and they helped me make my decision. Ask who ever you can and make your decision.

If you are ER/PR Negative you won't get Tamoxifen because your tumor did not feed on Estrogen or Progesterone.......It would not be beneficial to you at all..........Why take a pill that causes side effects when you don't have to?......Deb who told you Tamoxifen is a chemotherapy drug?....It is NOT a chemo therapy drug...My oncologist is one of the top in the nation.....She has NEVER called Tamoxifen a chemo drug even when I asked her...It is an estrogen blocker only.......

My breast surgeon did not ask pathology to test for hormone receptors for my DCIS - she thought it was not necessary for DCIS - BUT, when I went to see the medical oncologist he thought it should be tested and requested it, my rad onc thought we should have that inof also. The test came back negative for ER & PR so I was told there is no benefit to taking Tamoxifen or anything else that blocks hormone receptors or inhibits hormone production.

Thanks to everyone. I decided not to take Tamoxifen. I was considering it to prevent future ER PR + BC, but all the information seems to say future BC would be neg also. Three doctors told me future BC could be + or -. My cancer was also PER+, which, like ER- PR-  is also more aggressive. I wonder if there is anything else I should be doing besides mammograms and examinations.

Your dr would be the one to tell you if you should be doing something besides having regular checkups and mammograms.  So far as tamox goes, you are most likely correct in not taking it since you are ER negative.  I can't see how it would be of an benefit if you did not have + recptors.   I am one who did not take tamox because I was told it would not decrease my chances of recurrence that much and also I had no node involvement and my tumor was less than 1 cm when detected so it was felt the mastectomy took care of everything.  The good thing about that was that when my cancer did come back, they were able to use tamoxifen as treatment which theywould not have been able to do had I used it as preventative. It worked very well for me as a treatment as did all the AIs that followed, but I often wonder IF I had taken it as preventative if I would not be dealing with this today.  BUT being ER-,there is really no reason to take it.
