hi girls,

i want to start lifting weights to tone my arms and to increase my strength. i am worried about getting lymphadema.  if i do not have it do i need to wear a compression sleeve?  or do i just start out slowly?

i was going to start with 3 lbs and work up.  any advice would be helpful.

thanks,

diane

Starting slowly is the most important thing, work up gradually.  If you feel any aching or discomfort than back down.  It wouldn't hurt to see an LE specialist.  Lifting weights may actually be protective so you shouldn't avoid exercise.  You may want to post this in the LE section so the experts can weigh in.

My onco always gave me a hard time about lifting weights until we both realized I was lifting 5lb hand weights.  He said that onc's say that lifting 3, 5, 10 lb weights are okay.  He's more concerned about heavier weight lifting.

I started back slowly and only did what I could.  If I felt a twinge, I'd pull back a little.

My arms are nice and toned and I do not have lymphadema!
