cathy------even if  ILC or IDC were found, you would still have the option of lumpectomy, if that's want you want. Having LCIS doesn't preclude the lumpectomy option, although it does put both breasts at equal risk of invasive bc in the future.  All these decisions are so difficult and so personal; whatever you decide will be the right choice for you.

Well I can certainly say this has been a struggle. I finally decided to give the lumpectomy a try first, and have spent the last 1 1/2 weeks trying to get this scheduled. First I was told I would have to make 3 trips (900 miles away), 1 to sign consent, 1 for preop and 1 for surgery.Eventually they agreed to email consent form and I was finally told yesterday that they have booked me for surgery Friday November 13 (hope that's not a bad sign).

I think I may have subconsiously decided to do the lumpectomy, because for now, I have the choice. It may boil down to, I won't have a choice in any of this. If they are not able to get clean margins, which I have my doubts, simply because of the size of it (5.4x3.9x2.9cm) and I am small breasted to begin with or if they do find ILC or IDC once they do they pathology on the sample. I am kind of feeling like I might be backed into a corner here and will have no choice but to have bilateral. I feel like I now need to speak to a plastic surgeon to see what my options are and/or what the impact radiation would have if I end up going that route.

I also received in the mail another copy of the pathology report from (Oct 16) which has the size of this thing even larger than it was from Sept 28 MRI, which was already larger than the July 28 MRI. Does anyone know how accurate on the size they can be with MRI?  I have read on different threads where a MRI indicated one size, but when they actually did surgery it was smaller and/or bigger??????  So not sure if the aggressive nature of PLCIS could possibly account for how it seems to be growing so quickly?

Thanks to everyone for their support and information.  I don't know where I would be without all of you to talk to. I think with all the research that has been done for breast cancer it has perhaps benefited us in that they seem to know a little more about LCIS then 20 years ago, but at the same time it shows how far they have yet to go, just now finding out about this other animal PLCIS.

formykids: Wow, you have some traveling to do.    I could think of a lot better dream vacations than what you have planned, for sure!  I sure hope everything goes well, of course.  I have never met (in person) another person with LCIS of any shape or size, so I sure like to hear my LCIS sisters here.

Its hard having something they don't know about, but at least they have some idea.  I saw one woman on one TV program (Charlie Rose) and she had some sort of cancer that was so rare, there were only a handful of cases.  So they not only did not know the treatment, they also didn't have much of an idea about how deadly it was.  I know I would have more problems dealing with that situation, for sure.

re MRI+ tumor size:This is a rather small study, but it does give some info. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19886147, and another, larger study http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19800455

Sending you my very best wishes.
