Low-Carb Diet?

Options

On another thread, I read about low-carb diet being beneficial to skin during radiation therapy.  Have any of you heard anything about that?  Do you have any ideas about why that might be?  thanks!

It might have been a comment from me that you read. My naturopath recommended it to me. She said that carbs - particularly simple sugars, but all carbs - make the body 'hot' - they raise the body's temperature. I think she may have been speaking partly in terms of Chinese medicine. Anyway, she said that she always recommends to her patients who are having radiotherapy to avoid carbs since radiation increases the temperature of the breast and so if you are cooling your body by avoiding carbs it will counteract the effect of the radiation.

My radiation oncologist is sceptical but was happy for me to do it. I have had 20/30 treatments so far and have no burning, not even any pinkness. I am sure it is not all down to avoiding carbs - I know the radiation I am having is not targetting the skin much - but I am glad I have done it.

There was a study done in Germany, I believe, showing the efficacy of a low carb diet in battling end stage cancer in general, not just skin. Here is a link to a Time article about it.

BTW, just wondering if others follow a low carb or modified low carb diet?

My doctor put me on a modified low carb diet a few months ago. She said it was important for me to lose weight because of estrogen being stored in the fat (My bc was strongly estrogen positive). I have 90 grams of protein a day, spread over 3 meals and 2 snacks. I have a large green salad at lunch and broccoli or some other cruciferous or green vegetable with my evening meal. I have one piece of fruit a day (hard for a fruit addict!) - usually an apple or berries. I'm also on lots of supplements - vit B, C & D, fish oil, etc. On my last weigh-in, I had lost 5 kgs. I weighed 83 kgs at the start of the diet and feel so much better even after this small weight loss and all my clothes are very loose! Doctor thinks I should be losing the weight more quickly and is going to adjust my supplements to speed things up. Due to have another weigh-in and consult next Tuesday.

It may be because if you limit carbs you will probably make up the difference protein foods.  Protein is necessary for healing/wound repair.

BTW, when I had rads I never exhibited any real burning, just a very light "suntan" towards the end.  My diet was just whatever, nothing special.  Still, eating plenty of protein makes sense.

    Hi Ladies :)

I am interested in the Adkins diet. Is anyone here on this? I am wondering if being in ketosis is safe for ladies with BC?

Jane ~ Good for you losing weight!  Is it hard to stick to your diet?  Are you hungry all the time?  I am a carboholic, but I might have to do something about that!

Hi Suzanne, Thanks! My weight loss has slowed but hopefully with a few changes I can speed it up a bit. I am not hungry all the time and since being on this diet rarely get cravings - even though I love bread, fruit, rice etc. I find I can even sit with people while they eating cake, chocolate etc and so far it's been pretty easy to resist. I hope to reintroduce small amounts of healthy whole grain carbs one day but have to lose more weight first.

Hi gals, Has anyone here tried the "Fat Resistance Diet"? I just got back on it yesterday.....has yummy recipes, and breaks down each day for about 3 wks. Emphasis is on the "super foods"...the veggies and fruit that are esp good for us. Also, protein, etc. Deals with inflammation, and when I went on it during the summer, for just 2 1/2 weeks I felt SO good. The only downfall I find is, that it takes a LOT of prep work, since you are making everything (even dressings) fresh. But after all that Halloween candy, I felt it was time to try this again! You can google it and see the first days diet I think....but it really is a healthy plan. I learned it on our last cruise, and the acupuncturist that told us about it even can follow it eating cruise food (by making the right choices....much harder for me to do though...LOL).

Jane, amazing about your weight loss!!!! Best of luck to everyone. Hope I wasn't out-of-bounds to post here, but just wanted to mention how good this eating plan is, also. And it is low carb, also. Oh, and we fell in love with several of the recipes (the authors son is a chef and created them). Best to all,

    Kathy
