My mom is having a lot of pain from the shot.  Was wondering if anyone knows something more than just pain meds that works.  Its been a week and still is having a lot of pain in her shoulder was wondering if anyone else had a lot of pain and does it get better?

    Nicole1210:

I did not have any pain from my Neulasta shots.  I do know that there is some pain involved however I would inform her onc is she is in a lot of pain.  They should be able to give her something.

Nicole, have her try Claritan or any over the counter allergy pill.  Those of us on the April chemo boards took it and it really really helped with the bone pain.  Nobody knows why, but now because of our stories, many are recommending it.  Good luck!

Oh I feel for her!  That was by far the worst part of this process for me.  I agree with the above, the claritin (not the d) helped me but there were three to four days that were awful.  I am allergic to all narcotics so I was SOL.  My nurse gave me a rx for meloxicam 15mg for osteoarthritis and it worked (I didn't get it until the last round of AC though unfortunately). Good luck.

PS73- did you take the claritan and then the meloxicam. Or both.  Which helped more?

I took the claritan the day I received the shot and for 3-4 days afterwards, when the pain would really kick in.  I didn't take meloxicam.  It made such a difference.

Thank you Chelev... I will tell my mom... Her Oncologist just prescribed a pain med.  Didn't say anything about this.  But i will let her know we are using it.  Thanks a bunch

Nicole ask dont tell the doc :) You need to check for your mom to be sure none of her specific meds interfere. Sis took Claritan daily after I believe her 3rd Neulasta and through her Taxol - some docs recommend less but she has allergies anyway so it wasnt a hard sell. \

    Good luck!

I had horrible bone pain with the Neulasta shot.  I started taking Claritin once a day on the day before chemo, chemo day, and the two days following chemo and had NO pain once I started that regimine.  I hope it gets easier for you and your mom. xoxo Jessica

Nothing worked for me but narcotics. I had horrible pains in hips/thigh bones. They said it was due to them being some of the larger bones in the body.

No matter what talk to the onc about it.

When all else failed, I use to stand in a hot shower. I didn't know the Claritin secret when I was going through chemo. I'd get horrible head aches and pains in my jaw, shoulders, hips, knees and legs. I took pain pills like M & M's for 3-4 days because the pain was so bad. Standing in a hot shower at least kept my head from feeling like it was going to split open...

I also got the Neulasta shot in my stomach instead of the arm...I had no soreness around the injection site...however I did take claritin the day before the shot and 3 days afterwards.  I still had aching bones but wonder if it would have been worse without the claritin.

The Claritin trick works like magic for me.  I take one Claritin about an hour before the shot, then keep taking them for two days afterward.  If I begin to feel a little achy, I take either one Aleve or two Advil and the pain completely goes away.  But I had severe bone pain within 12 hrs without the Claritin that neither Aleve or Advil would touch.

Thank you everyone.  She was getting chemo every 2 weeks, but now they are switching her to every 3 weeks and discontinuing the neulasta.  She's been in pain this whole time and now she can't move her arm.  Its getting better, but they don't want to give it to her again. So no Neulasta, which makes me worry, but I would hate to see what another shot would do to her.
