So, you know those shooting pains you get --

Options

-- the ones from the nerve damage from radiation?  The ones that supposedly could continue for years and years?

I got to wondering about this -- what's the effect of reconstruction on the pain?  Does that exacerbate the pain?  I'm considering reconstruction in a few months but still debating the whole question, and I think this could have a bearing on my decision.

I don't know if this topic would be better in the Breast Reconstruction forum but I figured I would start here, since the pain is a side effect of radiation, as I understand it.

    Hello ladies,

I'm four years out this month from my rads.  I can't remember when exactly, but I haven't had those shooting pains in a long time.  My breast is sore but I think it is fluid build up.  The doc told me to continue to massage with sweet almond oil to move the fluids.

My surgery was removal of the lower right quadrant of the left breast.  I didn't have reconstruction.  I didn't want to go through more surgery.  Also I don't have a particular issue with my self image probably because my husband helped me to feel good about myself too.  I have my moments when the size difference is noticeable when I dress...mostly summer.  But even this seems to be an issue in the rear view mirror.

Time can be a great healer.

Try to handle each day as it comes.  Best wishes to you on this journey that far too often tests our resolve and patience.

    Marilyn
