Hi Everyone,
I am waiting for a xray of my thumb as i have arthritis so bad there it is double in size.
I have alot of arthritis in my body (26yrs) and i am on celebrex.
It is my left hand and i do have le in my left hand and arm which is doing well.
I have to get a xray again of it (likely take a month to get it) and i DO need a cortisone injection and i am concerned. I also think the inflamation is playing a part in my hand swelling.
I have put this of for a couple of years but the quality of my life is so painful.
I don't want to get a infection or make my le worse so is there anyone who has had a CORTISONE INJECTION IN THEIR LE HAND?
Can someone give me some pointers so i know what to do before and after i get it.
Should i wrap or wear my sleeve? etc
Thank you so much bc and le hugs carol

Jinky,
So sorry you are having soooo much pain.
I have truncal LE on my left side, nothing in my arm. I had two cortisone shots in my left hand. One shot was extremely painful, for about twelve hours, the other was a walk in the park. I wish I had taken Ibuprofen before the shot, and had a driver and an ice bag waiting for me.
I wore my sleeve for the shots and put the glove on afterward. The doc was fine with that. The shots helped my pain and I had no LE pain or swelling following the shots. After less invasive treatment did not help my hand issues my LE therapist thought the shots were a good idea.
Not exactly the same situation as you, but similiar.
Hope you can get out of pain soon.

Hi there, sorry to hear you are have so much pain, When I had the problem with the tennis elbow in my LE arm, I had to have a cortisone injection and I was really worried, I started my antibiotic a day before the injection and took them for the 10 days and I didn't have a problem. The shot was really painfully cause I had so much fluid in my arm, but it did help. Good luck
Hang in there
LE Hugs

Hi Jinky,
I don't have LE (knock on wood) -- but I've had cortisone injections for tendinitis (years before BC). Sounds like you've tried everything else and it's really time to try this injection (you may have read my comment elsewhere where I said I wouldn't recommend injection as a FIRST resort, but if nothing else works, you need it).
Peggy and Darleen's suggestions sound really good.
Good luck,
Ann

Jinky, I have bi-lat. LE which has inflamed my carpal tunnel syndrome. I did a cortisone injection in my wrist about 3-4 weeks ago. I had no problems with infection or other complications. Just wish it had worked better! I did nothing different after the injection that I hadn't done before. I would hope your Doc would advise you but many know NOTHING about LE. I hope you find the relief to improve your quality of life. Pain can sure be debilitating!!!

What is with the imbedded drug ads? Don't anybody click on them and we'll try reporting this to the moderators. Gulu, your post is appropriate, but the inbedded links are not. Let's see what the moderators have to say...

Note that the msg is a copy of Peggins' message higher up. I don't know who gulu is, but also note that he/she "joined" BC.org in October 2009, so it is probably just someone destroying other people's messages.

I noticed that it was a copy of Peggins message from Feb 2008. I reported the post and it was removed.

Hi, I was dx'd in jan 2005 with IDC stage 2, went through chemo and rads afterbuy ultram lumpectomy. In the last 6 months-8 months or more I have had come and go left shoulder pain that sometimes responds to massage, accupuncture, NSAIDS, but not very well. I have had bone scans and MRI about a year ago that were good. I've been writing off this shoulder pain as muscle, overuse, rotator cuff etc etc. It does not seem to get better with rest or get worse with heavy exercise or lifting. Sometimes it just goes away for a while and sometimes itbuy fioricet comes back for no reason. The pain feels like burning all across my upper shoulder, middle of my shoulder blade, and one point under my arm near the shoulder blade. Now I feel a very tender area on the left front lowest rib area which may be a bruise. I'm starting to freak myself out, and I hope someone will tell me about what their pain feels like. I do have an appointment with my oncologist in 2 weeks, and I'm sure that she will order a bone scan. I did have all over bone pain with neulasta, so I know what that feels like and this is not like that... This pain feels like it is in the muscle, but it does not get better much with massage. It goes away completely withmeridia percocet (which I took for a couple days for a foot injury), but ibuprofen does not help it. The pain also completely went away when we went to Hawaii recently with the warmth.

There have been a couple recently with imbedded ads. I reported them. They appear to be a copy of a previous post with ads imbedded. Whoever is doing this, please stop and read the rules.

SoMuch, yes you can get a cortisone shot. Pain isn't good for lymphedema (it draws lymph fluid to the site), so finding a way to control it is an advantage. But keep an eye on it for new swelling, redness, warmth to the touch or flu-like symptoms that could indicate infection, and report those to your doctor promptly.
Gentle hugs, and wishes for quick relief,

SoMuch, I have bilateral arm and truncal LE and yes, I have had cortisone injected into a trigger thumb, wrist, and an injured knee. I had no complications as far as infection goes but everytime my LE flared. I also swell when I take NSAID'S--just one of those things. As Binney advised, just watch for signs of infection. Good luck to you! katiejane
