Ok, now that I have a prognosis and everything I told all my relatives.

Five years ago my Aunt had bc and we had the same surgeon!

This is in NY where there are plenty of them!!

I never even knew she had bc!!!!!!!

    Suz,

We have had similar things happen in my family. I had an uncle who died of colon cancer and found it out from a co worker at a temp job. I became worried because I had always had bowel problems and had a colonoscopy. I had two pre cancerous polyps.

That is why I tell all my relatives about my breast cancer. I respect people's privacy but I think some people take it too far. I believe that info such as this should be shared. Hugs, Mazy

We were both very close to my great aunt who also had bc, and had a surgeon in the same group.

She had a small tumor and only rads, but still, kind of amazing nobody ever mentioned it!!!

    Suz,

In my family...if there are some who dont get along...they wont even mention the name of whoever they are mad at and wont go to funerals etc. Those family members are all gone now and I am the keeper of the records. I have vowed to always keep my cousins, etc informed so they never have to go thru things like that.

Then there ae the people like me who don't realize when family history is, well, me.

I had 2 aunts who had bc, but they were both in their 80"s at dx and on my father's side. I thought it was only from mother's side and only premenopausal that was relevant. Nope. Not only that, another aunt on my father's side had colon cancer (apparently related ca) and my grandma on that side had ovarian ca. Didn't know any of that was relevant.

Well, at least I can't say it made a diffrenence in screening for me. Mammo 10 months before I found the lump was clear.

I hate to say this, but I really wish I had known. Perhaps it would have changed what tests I had.

I agree with you about that you really SHOULD have known.  People do have a right to privacy, but they also have a right to inform others especially relatives about any cancers that they may have.  It gives their relatives a chance to keep a closer eye on their health and change certain aspects that they may never think of doing...such as exersizing and diet.

It also helps aid the Dr. in what they may need to look for when you are being cared for.
