Hi I'm new here. I had both. The tumors were close together so my surgeon and I decided on a Lumpectomy. Everyone is so different and the decision has to be something that you feel is 100% right for you. Good luck to you!
-
I had multifocal IDC in one quadrant and then discovered DCIS in another quadrant same breast. I had to have a mastectomy. I do wonder if i should have had a bilateral but I didn't. I am happy with my reconstruction, just recently had the nipple done and my right side lift. I look in the mirror now and truly think WOW.... I was not given a choice, had I been given a choice though.. i would have chosen the route I took anyway. It is a very personal decision though.

Can you tell me whether you had any loss of sensation in the healthy breast on which you had the lift? I am scheduled for my exchange + lift in several weeks. Having lost all feeling in the mastectomy breast, I'm worried about the lift causing nerve damage in the other. Thanks.

me too.......I had found a lump (only 33 with no history so hadn't gone for a mammo) and had the core biopsy which came back as IDC. I went with mastectomy and path came back with several areas of DCIS in the same breast that did not show up on the mammo. So glad I went with mastectomy, how would I have known about the DCIS if I had lumpectomy only?

If one has a lumpectomy and breast reduction (both sides) as I have, then the DCIS would/could be picked up too. But this is no negative comment on anyone else's circumstance because we are all very different. This op works well with larger breasted girls who are therefore likely to be lucky with clean margins. It isn't available everywhere. It is more commonplace in the UK than the USA, as far as I know. Don't know about other countries.
It has been a good op for me, but there is quite a lot of healing to be done which is quite slow. When having reduction or lift, to begin with you are very numb. Then the nerves come back to life. (I have not had implants - mine is reduction and lift). No effect on arm muscles or anywhere. I could start weight lifting again really and probably ought to! Does this info help at all? feel free to ask more.
My path shows that I started with DCIS which became IDC. Which is commonplace.

I had a sitaution similar to yours. First they found IDC and I was to have a lumpectomy followed by radiation. A review of my mammogram found another area of concern. Biopsy of 2nd area found DCIS. I was given the choice of two golf sized lumpectomies or a skin sparing mastectomy. I was small busted and two golf ball sized lumpectomies would have left me pretty mangled appearancewise. My BS described DCIS as a stage before cancer. I didn't want to leave anything to chance so I chose the mastectomy. I wanted to give my self the best possible chance of survival. I made the right decision as the final path report showed DCIS thooughout my entire breast and not just in the one spot.
Take care

I felt a lump and an US showed a mass.....biopsy showed IDC and a cyst with atypical cells ? carcinoma. Both near each other, so I had a lumpectomy. However, during the surgery the BS found two other areas which he excised....a thickened area, and a second tumor. The path shows that all four sites have DCIS throughout with bad margins and the second tumor was a second IDC 1.1cm.
Nothing was seem on my routine mammo last June, and none of the extra findings were seen on the pre-op MRI. That is the scarey part for me.
My BS told me that I could try another lumpectomy for clean margins.
I am thinking I should have a uni or bilat mastectomy.
I decided I would call a cancer center for a second opinion. I am going to do that tomorrow.
Good luck with your decision.....this is not easy.

I did not read everyone's posts on this, but am responding to the original topic. I did have both trypes of cancer in my breast and was told it was rather unusual. I had a mastectomy as treatment and that was it since they were still doing trials on tamoxifen back then. They took out 19 lymph nodes and all wer negative so I did not have any chemo or anything else, just the mastectomy. In 98 I was diagnosed as Stage lV so obviously at least one of those invasive cells had left the breast. I was ER Pr+ and responded very favorably to the hormonal treatments and only had to do actual chemo this past year. Given the proper treatment you could never go any further than Stage l or wherever you are at now. I do know that they now say lumpectomies are as successful as mastectomies.

What was the grade of your cancer when you were originally diagnosed?

Hi there,
I had IDC & DCIS in my left breast and had DCIS all over my right breast. If memory serves me correctly it was comedo necrosis..in both and the tumor (IDC) was also covered with DCIS as well. Needless to say I had no options except to have the bi-lateral masectomy. Interesting note that the previous 6 month mammogram I had showed "nothing". The only reason why I knew there was a problem is because I felt a strange lump.
The masectomy was no picnic; but the end result was very perky breasts~!
Let me know if I can help in anyway..thanks for posting.

The MRI-directed biopsy results came back as benign. I know that doesn't give me 100% assurance that there is no problem in the area, but I'm willing to make a decision to stick with the lumpectomy, based on the results. So I go in for surgery on Wednesday. Thanks for all the input about decision making. I can't believe how many different scenarios there are among us, just on this thread. Now I have to wait for the pathology report to find out about the lymph nodes, but from what I've read, since I'm HER2+, I'll need chemo first, even if the nodes are clear.
