Invasive Ductal Carcinoma AND DCIS in same breast

I had multifocal IDC in one quadrant and  then discovered DCIS in another quadrant same breast. I had to have a mastectomy.  I do wonder if i should have had a bilateral but I didn't.  I am happy with my reconstruction, just recently had the nipple done and my right side lift. I look in the mirror now and truly think WOW.... I was not given a choice, had I been given a choice though.. i would have chosen the route I took anyway.  It is a very personal decision though.

me too.......I had found a lump (only 33 with no history so hadn't gone for a mammo) and had the core biopsy which came back as IDC.  I went with mastectomy and path came back with several areas of DCIS in the same breast that did not show up on the mammo.  So glad I went with mastectomy, how would I have known about the DCIS if I had lumpectomy only? 

I had a sitaution similar to yours.  First they found IDC and I was to have a lumpectomy followed by radiation.  A review of my mammogram found another area of concern.  Biopsy of 2nd area found DCIS. I was given the choice of two golf sized lumpectomies or a skin sparing mastectomy.  I was small busted and two golf ball sized lumpectomies would have left me pretty mangled appearancewise.  My BS described DCIS as a stage before cancer.  I didn't want to leave anything to chance so I chose the mastectomy. I wanted to give my self the best possible chance of survival.  I made the right decision as the final path report showed DCIS thooughout my entire breast and not just in the one spot.

  I did not read everyone's posts on this, but am responding to the original topic.  I did have both trypes of cancer in my breast and was told it was rather unusual.  I had a mastectomy as treatment  and that was it since they were still doing trials on tamoxifen back then.  They took out 19 lymph nodes and all wer negative so I did not have any chemo or anything else, just the mastectomy.  In 98 I was diagnosed as Stage lV so obviously at least one of those invasive cells had left the breast.  I was ER Pr+ and responded very favorably to the hormonal treatments and only had to do actual chemo this past year.  Given the proper treatment you could never go any further than Stage l or wherever you are at now.  I do know that they now say lumpectomies are as successful as mastectomies.

I had IDC & DCIS in my left breast and had DCIS all over my right breast.  If memory serves me correctly it was comedo necrosis..in both and the tumor (IDC) was also covered with DCIS as well.  Needless to say I had no options except to have the bi-lateral masectomy. Interesting note that the previous 6 month mammogram I had showed "nothing". The only reason why I knew there was a problem is because I felt a strange lump.

The masectomy was no picnic; but the end result was very perky breasts~!
