What to expect with masectomy surgery

I have been told by my plastic surgeon that I can have my masectomy and implant sugery at the surgical center and not the hospital. I am not sure which to choose.  I wasn't sure if a hopistal stay after a masectomy is still common or is it considered same day surgery these days.

Hi Abbie! I would ask your breast surgeon where they would prefer you have your surgery done, I know my breast surgeon who actually did the mastectomy preferred the hospital, the PS then came in and did her part (tissue expanders) after the BS was done with her part.  I stayed overnight in the hospital.  I went to the surgery center for the exchange to implants surgery and will return there on Wednesday for my nipples.  For me, I would preferred to be in the hospital for the "big" surgery. Best of luck!!! Let us know how you are doing!

Hi Abbie :>  I had a bilateral mastectomy (without reconstruction) and went home a few hours after the surgery.  It seems to be a big surgery for day surgery, but that seems to be the trend unless you insist on an overnight stay.  I think I might have been encouraged to choose the same day so my surgeon didn't have to do rounds for me at the hospital if I stayed overnight.  It's a personal decision, but I would choose to stay in the hospital if I had to do it again.  Best to you! lisa

Well,  I had the mastectomy with reconstruction (expander) in the surgical center.  It was a lot for one day - but went home that evening and sleep all night.  Woke up with a bit of an upset stomach, but all in all was fine.  I am pleased with the decision to have the surgery in the surgical center.  I felt that I truly was the center of attention and got wonderful care.  I hope to have the expander removed next month and the implant put it.  I am looking forward to being done with these surgeries.
