Vaginal bleeding after first round of chemo anyone?

I had my first round of chemo on Thrsday, the shot Friday afternoon and today I woke up with vaginal bleeding (a little cramping almost as if my period starts. Should not have been the case for another 2 weeks. Anyone else experience this?  I know the treatment throws off your cycle and will put you through menopause if you haven't been through it yet, but I'm a little worried as I'm not sure if it is just my period or some other side effect?

    Piffken,

This happened to me around my 3rd chemo tx.  I had finished my period and about 5 days later I started bleeding again.  It wasn't heavy but it was concerning as this continued daily for over a month.  Any doc or nurse I spoke with kept telling me not to be concerned but that's easier said than done at the time!  About 2 wks after my 4th chemo tx the bleeding stopped and I have not had a period or vaginal bleeding since.......that was the middle of June 09.  I'm 45 and my guess is that I was already heading into a peri-menopausal state when I was first dx and started treatment.  All the best to you!!

Thank you, so in other words, this could be the last one ever??? I would have no problem with that. How did you make it through hot flashes, mood swings and everything else that comes with it?

This happened to me as well after my first chemo. The odd part was I hadn't had a period in over two years [at the age of 45] and there was some concern by my medical team. They ordered some ultrasound scans of my uterus and ovaries and made an appointment with a GYN/OB who specializes in female cancers.

The tests found nothing. There were no cancerous cells in the blood. And it never happened again so we checked it off the list as "bizarre" and moved onto chemo no 2.

If it helps, I am now 4 years past active treatment and doing well.

I used to get my period every 35 days or so.  When I started chemo I started getting it every 3 weeks exactly, always the day before I was getting my infusion.  Not fun but the docs didn't seem worried especially due to my age (33).  This final round of chemo I had 10 days ago, I did not get my period this time and still haven't gotten it.  Maybe it finally decided to leave... I'm sure I've not seen the last of it though!

    Piffken,

It's hard to say whether it will come back or not.  Seems to be a wait and see approach for me right now.  Side effects were not too bad initially, (chemo se's at the time over-shadowed them), but they have intensified since I started Tamox.  Have to say that the night sweats and difficulty sleeping are the worst se's for me......so far anywayWink......I guess only time will tell.  Wishing you all the best through your tx.

    Hi Sandy,

So you really started to notice the side-effects after you started the Tamoxifen? Isn't that what you get after your rounds of chemo and radiation, towards the end of your treatment?

Piffken - I had one period after my first chemo treatment.  Sorry this is TMI but it was heavy with a lot of huge blood clots.  I too got worried because this was unusual for me.  It ended up being the last period I have had and that was 8 months ago.  I chalked it up to my body reacting to chemo after talking to some of the ladies here.

    Piffken,

Yes, the se's have been intensifying since I started Tamoxifen which was the end of Aug, just after radiation finished.  Now it is possible that these se's are also intensifying as I get further away from my last period.....hard to say at this point.

There are different point of views as to when Tamoxifen should start.  My med onc told me I could start it one month after chemo had finished, but my rad onc wanted me to wait until after radiation because of the reaction I was getting over from chemo.  My chemo tx was supposed to be 6 cycles, one every 3 weeks.  The regimen was 3 x FEC, 3 x Taxotere + 1 year of Herceptin.  FEC was manageable but Taxotere really hit me hard.  I had what they call a "severe toxic reaction" which worsened after my 2nd Taxotere (5th treatment), and consequently, my 6th/final treatment was cancelled.  I am still getting Herceptin infusions every 3 wks which will continue until May 2010.  It's a long road..........this board has been a huge help in making it a little easier!

    Best,

    Sandy

Well, my period started on the 25th of September, right on schedule.  My first TC treatment was the 30th.....my second TC was on the 21st...and I am still on my period.  I have been heavy flow EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR A MONTH!  Not normal for me.  I had a pelvic/vaginal U/S prior to surgery so we know everything is okay down there.....just my ovaries going into hyperdrive or something?   My oncologist wants me to see my gyn this week if it doesn't stop so we can discuss an endo ablation prior to treatment #3.  I am anemic and this doesn't help, so they are concerned.

I had some mid cycle bleeding after my first chemo.  I don't know if it's normal or not, but it happened to me too. After my 3rd chemo I think I stopped with periods alltogether.

    Good luck,

     Pam

I was due for my period several days after my first chemo anyway, so I don't know whether the chemo caused it, but I can say that I had a period just about every 2 weeks until just before my 4th T/C.  I had just a spot of blood that time and then haven't heard from it since.  I think I did have some hot flashes.  I tend to run hot and cold anyway - so I wasn't sure at first, but I do think they were hot flashes. I haven't been having them lately, so I think I might be on my way back to normal.  But after rads, I'll be going on Tamoxifen - not sure what will happen then.

Today is the 8th day since my first chemo treatment.  Before today I've had some cramping (as if I were getting my period).  I went to the bathroom and saw very light vaginal blood when I wiped.  I am 49 and my period has been on and off over the last few months with my last real period being May 31st.  I had very light bleeding over 3 days earlier in August.

I will call my onc on Monday.

That happened to me a few times actually. Let your MO know about it so they're aware of the situation, but in my case they weren't too concerned. My MO said that chemo does crazy stuff to your cycle, especially for younger women. So far chemo hasn't made me postmenopausal, despite all the havoc with my cycle, but we'll see... Best wishes to you during chemo!
