I need to avoid phytoestrogens. I also need to avoid grapefruit and tumeric - and anything else that inhibits Tamoxifen. Any suggestions as to where to find healthy anti-cancer recipes?

My onco told me to stay away from phytoestrogens also.  He put me on Arimidex.  Phytoestrogens are plant based estrogen like hormones.  There are so many things with this, such as soy, yams, certain cremes, facial and body, herbal teas etc.  But I won't allow myself to be anal about it.

Athena, my onco nurse specificly warned me not to take Black Cohosh.  I know it most be a strong phytoestrogen, because I used to take it years ago because it was said that it helps with trying to get pregnant.  For your hot flashes  try asking your doc to put you on a low dose of effexor.  it makes a huge difference for me in helping to eliminate the hot flashes.  I take 371/2 mg.

Shanagirl - the only reason I am anal about phytoestrogens is that I am only an intermediate metabolizer of tamoxifen, so there is no way I want to inhibit it further. I am on an increased dosage of that drug and WANT IT TO WORK maximally!!! The odd phytoestrogen is probably OK but but a bunch together in a meal (garlic, curly kale, red wine, chocolate, licorice tea) (and then there is grapefruit, tumeric....) and I think I might have a big problem.

I am only on Day 23 (4 years, 343 days to go LOL), so I gather the SEs have not really kicked in yet. The only thing I have noticed (I am post menopausal) is some mild night sweats and an odd mild hot flash. I am hopeful this will be all I get    ;-)

    Ladies,

You are all asking questions that I have been wondering about!  I had posted about Avlimil complete, but no one answered me. This is a natural non-hormonal aid for menopausal symptoms - it was recommended to me by my GYN when I saw him a couple of days ago - for those who are highly ER/PR+ this seemed to be a good idea.  I am not experiencing any hot flashes, but vaginal and libido changes.  I just read Shanagirl's post about black cohosh being a no no, and looked at the paperwork about Avlimil and it says it has black cohosh in it. Ugh!  That's why I love coming on these forums - I really believe we know more than the docs do sometimes!  I also wonder how you all came to find out how well you are metabolizing Tamox - my Onc says the insurance companies are not paying for this test. Great topic bcamnb.  Tammy

    Hi Tammy,

And I am sorry, Athena-Lioness, for the repetition from another discussion group we have been in.... I am in Canada and paid for my testing (about $295 US)  - Genelex lab in Seattle. There is no testing lab in Canada. Easy to do - they send the pkg; you swab your cheek as they direct and send the swabs back; and from start to finish - about three weeks - you have the results. Athena-Lioness knows my onc was not at all supportive/ interested in the test UNTIL I HAD THE RESULTS - he has actually improved quite a bit LOL! I am on 30 mg of Tamoxifen.

Ask your doc for Vit E 800 IU vaginal suppositories (used before bedtime). They are very messy but wonderful!
