Crafts after BC is good for the soul

this is something new I am going to try. It is beads made out of old newspapers, glue, roll them and dry them, then paint and coat of varnish. You sure can't buy a necklace like that. Can make all size and shapes.
-
Spar - where in the world did you come up with that idea? It sure doesn't look like it is made of old newspaper - it is exquisite. I just love when you can recycle stuff - trash to real treasure. Can't wait to see what you do.
-
I just found it going through the internet looking for new recycling and crafts. I just though they were so cool. When I make some I will take pictures and post.
-
spar, those look fun to make. It is like a paper mache (sp) bead but when you varnish it that makes it more durable. When I was in elementary school (long time ago) at vacation bible school, we made barrel beads out of wallpaper strips. We cut the wall paper into long triangles (about 1 inch to an inch and a half at the bottom and about 8 inches tall. wrapped the wide end of the triangle around a round toothpick and kept wrapping until we got to the tip, used some glue at the narrow end to hold everything together and laid them aside to dry. After they dried, we strung them on some string and sprayed them with spray varnish for at least 2 times. After the varnish dried, we strung them on dental floss with pony beads and faceted beads to make pretty necklaces. You can do it with old newspaper, maps, anything that will be interesting.
edited to add: here is a link to a fun page with better directions than I wrote. http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/paper-beads-664236/

Cool Sheila, there is so much stuff out there we can recycle and make pretty things with. Right now I just have to do whatever I can on the couch with my leg propped up but soon, oh soon I am going to be back to normal and go nuts making new stuff. Right now I am still knitting hats. I'll be called the hat lady soon.
-
Dental Floss is good for stringing beads. Pretty cheap also.
-
I have heard that and do have some unwaxed floss that I got when they closed down the pharmacy I use to work at. I may try that, it would be fun. What kind of knot do you use when you tie off string or dental floss?
-
If you loop the end over the last bead and under the next to last one, it is sort of a knot, but more of a loop over - make sense?
-
Spar - you are so right. I love to recycle old furniture - I mean really love it. I wish people would understand the difference between an old piece of junk recycled and made beautiful and painting a beautiful old piece of furniture. I blush to admit on trash pick up day I have gone along a street looking for small pieces of furniture people have dumped. Its the best!
-
Kathleen, years ago when I was still in jr high (i think), we were driving into town and my mom saw a small armless rocking chair on top of a trash can. She pulled into the church parking lot next to the house and my older brother ran over and picked up the chair. It needed a new piece of cane bottom and the paint job on it was chipped badly. My great grandfather took that rocker and made it look like a new piece of furniture. It is now a treasured piece of furniture in my home. And after I moved into my home, a rental home up the street was being cleaned out and there was a small table (kitchen table height with large legs) put out with the trash. At the time I was needing a table for my son to put his hermit crab cage on in his room. I walked up the street, picked up the table and carried it back to the house. It has a Formica top on it and the base/legs are painted white. I probably could strip the base back to the original but it still looks decent for a side table in his room. When I moved into my house, I told people that I would graciously accept any donations of furniture. I got a sofa that needed new cushions, a small side chair, and a dining room table and chairs. We still visit the 'Habitat for Humanity Re-store' if we need another piece of furniture to replace something that has worn out.

Hello, all my crafty friends!.....I haven't been here for a while......Spar glad you are feeling better....WOW! I had no idea we almost lost our little Spar!.......Hope you got the pain pills worked out.......I'm gonna call you later...I am waitng for my washer and dryer to be delivered....I hated having to go get another set.....I am so used to my old ones...They mean a lot to me cause they were my very first set we bought together when we moved into our house...We always used the community laundromat in our apartment complex before we bought our house......We are still in our very first house we ever bought too....Don't think I will ever move.......
I remember doing beads like Sheila described once upon a long time ago in Vacation Bible School.....Can't remember exactly how we did it though.......
My latest craft is yet another doily.....I also am working on more booties......Spar I am like you, I think I will go nuts making booties!.....LOL -
Lucy, that is why I said I did them a loooong loooooong time ago. My mom and I considered renewing that project at church several years ago but that was dropped. We also made corn necklaces one time. The teacher took dried field corn, soaked the kernels in water with food coloring in it so that they changed colors. We took the softened kernels, pierced them with a needle and threaded them on dental floss, put a narrow leather (shoe lace like) strip to connect the two ends (so the hard corn wouldn't scratch our neck), hung them up to dry and sprayed them with varnish. I don't remember how long that necklace lasted but that was fun at church camp.

I've sewed forever and became known for my daughter's formal gowns when she was in high school. I learned machine embroidery in the mid-90's on my Pfaff sewing/embroidery machine. I enjoyed it so much, I retired in 2006 to start my own custom embroidery business. I now have professional software and commercial embroidery machines, which allow me to do many more things than my little home machine, but I still love to make things for friends and family. Sewing and embroidery feed my inner artist and give me a real sense of accomplishment, but the real joy comes from the reactions of the people who receive the things I make.
Attached is a photo of one of my favorite jacket back projects.

-
TOB -- love the avatar and love the jacket. In fact, it is stunning! Unfortunately, I can't even figure out how to thread the machine. For a while my sister and I had two sewing machines and neither of us sews! Of course, we have 3 irons still in the box and neither one of us irons.
I do collect dolls and Patricia Loveless, a local artist, told me she has been sewing since she was 5 years old. Her dolls and their clothes are exquisite!
See for yourself
She has done even more elaborate hats.
-
Sheila - I don't know about you but as someone said this fulfills the artist in me. It does a heart good and I feel very productive when I finish a piece.
-
Thank you, Kathleen. Gorgeous detail in the dress and hat. That takes time and real skill.
As for the avatar, it is part of my pig obsession (I collect pig anything) and my company motto. The most frequent question I get from prospective customers is "can you ______?" I often embroider the backs of my jackets and vests with my company name, several flying pigs and our motto, "Where Pigs Fly". When I get that question, I tell them that the answer is on my back. It's always good for a chuckle.
-
Hi TOB and welcome, we love new ideas and new people to bring those new ideas. Love the back of the jacket, that is so cool
Thanks for the knotting tips, yes, it helps a lot.
I have to admit, I have one of those old timey desk in my bedroom where it has a drop top that makes a small desk with 3 drawers that I got out of my neighbors garbage, we sanded it, restained it, used a little wood glue and I love it. As a matter of fact I put the dove doily hollyann made me on it now so you can see it better.
Lucy is on a little fun trip and will be gone for a few days so don't worry about her she is out having fun.
TOB, do you have a web site that you could share so we can look at your things?
I have so many projects going on at the same time, quilting, knitting, trying still to learn to double crochet around the knitted squares, makeing jewelry, soon as I can stand I am going to make the recycle newspaper beads but you have to boil the newspaper.
Lefty, what kind of needle do you use on the plastic you sent, I want to try that next, i can sit with my leg propped up and do that. I have a plastic needle but it is not flexable, Do you need a flexable needle? I have a jewely needle that is flexable but don't know if the yarn will fit through it.
So good to talk to you all again. Miss you guys. Keep on crafting.
-
Spar, I use a large eye tapestry needle that is dull, not sharp, or I end up stabbing myself (not the most coordinated gal on this thread...!!). They also call them "craft needles", usually right there with the plastic canvas sheets. And I always use a needle threader. It does not have to be flexible and I find the plastic needles are often too thick.
Does anyone make rice bags you can heat up in the microwave? What type of rice, what is the best fabric to use? How much rice ? Thanks for any info.
-
You gals are so talented. I have just gotten back to knitting......but I also have rug hooking and needlepoint projects planned. I am so glad I found this thread.
Mandy
-
Welcome Mandy, this is a wonderful thread. I love to make rug hooking too. I have a large one going right now red with OU in the center. Haven't been working on it lately though. My grandson wants it for his room. He is an OU fan. I made him an OU Boomer Sooner pillow that he loves
Lefty, I make the rice bags, couldn't do without them in the winter, sometimes I warm then just to hold is I feel chilled. I buy the biggest bag of the cheapest rice there is and find it works well. I like flannel for the material but have made cotton ones that work just as well. I made one a long time ago from cutting out the back yoke on a shirt, it was already sewed on all 4 sides but ripped out the stitching on the end, filled it with rice, and hand sewed it back up and I used it yesterday to warm my feet up. Don't fill it all the way full of rice or it won't be flexible.
Thanks for the info on the needle, next time I go to hobby lobby I will get one and some more plastic canvas sheets.
Have a wonderful Sunday ladies. Off to church, my first time in 3 weeks, I am excited.
-
Spar2,
Thank you for the compliment. My website is in the works, but not quite ready for primetime yet. I will be happy to PM you when it is up and running, but I am not trying to use this discussion board for business. Whether as a gift or for a paying customer, I just get a real "high" from creating one-of-a-kind items and seeing their pleasure when they see if for the first time.
-
PM me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Thaks spar. I have some an old flannel shirt that should work. Do you fill it about 2/3 full of rice? And how long do you heat it in the microwave? Sorry for being so dumb, but I have multiple reasons: CRS, CRAFT, PSD, Chemo brain, old age...
-
TOB, I would love that. Thank you. I usually fill it a little more that 2/3 and heat it 2 minutes. Depending what I want to use them for is the size I make for example the one for my lower back in probably about 15" long and about 8" wide. You remind me of me cause if there is an old shirt that gets torn or wears out I take off the buttons to keep and cut out what is good for quilting and sometimes cut off the arms and use them for rice packs. Recyle. LOL
I am missing JO and Lucy, I think Lucy will be back tomorrow and I am gonna e-mail JO and see how she is.
Everyone have a great day.
-
Hi I really enjoy reading this thread. I am thinking when I am recuperating from my hip surgery, it would be a good time to do some arts and crafts.
-
I am glad to hear from you JO, you have been busy. Wish I could see pictures but I know how your computer and photobucket are.
Candie, when are you having hip surgery? We will have to have a prayer party on that day. We will be with you in spirit.
There is a store here called Clowns for God, it is like goodwill, soon as my foot is healed I am going to see if they have any old jewelry to buy and take apart. Are you using some of your old pieces JO? Your jewelry is always so gorgous.
-
Can you call making 2 fairy chairs out of old chairs that has no cane? How about my Bittersweet Wreath on my website? I painted that wooden pumpkin that is on the wall, I don't know how to post them on here.
-
those are all good crafts. the only way I have been able to post my own photos is upload them to photobucket and then copy and paste here. You ought to put your web site on your bio so people can check it out. It is really good and has wonderful pictures. I have missed you.
-
OK I will do that.
