Just diagnosed

I am a 38 year old mother of 2 just diagnosed Oct. 5th with IDC.  I have a lumpectomy and lymph node removal scheduled for Thursday the 20th.  I'm sure after that I will find out the stage.  I'm trying to remain as positive as possible, ofcourse I have good days and bad days with that.  I have a lot to learn and a long road ahead of me.  I  have been reading your posts and am positive I will find some much needed support here with you all.

    Hi KzooAmy,

    Welcome, and you will find a lot of support with these women - they are awesome.

    I remember the weeks leading up to my surgery - they were the most stressful of all. I analyzed my core biopsy report for weeks - it was driving me a little crazy.  I was nervous about the surgery, but it went okay - I didn't have any post surgical lumpectomy or sentinel node biopsy pain, just some swelling.  And then I had to wait for the results - that's the most difficult aspect of this entire process.

    Do you know if you're er/pr positive yet?

    KzooAmy, so sorry that you have to join our group here. You will find alot of support and alot of answers here. Just remember..we are all survivors!  :) 

    By any chance are you from Kalamazoo?..The 'Kzoo' in your name made me wonder.

    J-I'm not sure if I'm er/pr positive yet.  Maybe they will tell me after the surgery?  The wondering and waiting is sooo hard, I just want it out of me!

    Hugs to you KzooAmy-  just know that it will get easier once you feel like you are doing something to erradicate this disease.   Here is hoping that you get great results and that you can continue to stay positive.  We are here if you need us.  Tami

    I got the er/pr status from the core biopsy results, but my core biopsy was ridiculous - the radiologist stuck me about 15 times, so she had a lot of tissue to work with. Waiting is the hardest part, but it's usually a couple of weeks between diagnosis and surgery. Just try to stay calm and if you have any concern or questions, please post them - we have all been through this Best, J.

    Hi Amy,

    I had to ask for all of my reports and I'm glad that I did b/c I was able to go through each and understand what was going on.  I trust my doctors, but I'm not letting them make any decisions for me. Someone on here suggested that I get a copy of all my reports (and I did) and bring the same dedicated notebook with me to each appointment, which was a great idea. I went to each appointment with a list of questions - they were glad to see me go :-).

    I also felt the same way (about just wanting it out) and I was really calm throughout the diagnosis and surgery and then afterwards it all kind of hit me. Two weeks after the surgery I called the surgeon in a panic - a delayed response I guess, but she was very patient with me.

    If you haven't already, get an ice pack - it will help with the post surgical swelling. I had no pain, just some swelling and I think that's the case with most people. And I mixed the ice with water, so it would have a soft cushion effect. Also, I bought a couple of extra large sports bras - no underwire, like the kind you can wear in the gym - it helped keep everything from moving around. And wear a button down shirt the day of the lumpectomy - I'm thinking you will probably have a sentinel node biopsy and your underarm will feel a little numb and tight afterwards, but nothing at all unmanageable.

    You will have to ask for it KzooAmy.  My suggestion is that as you fight the good fight, get copies of all diagnostic/lab testing you have done.  That way you can see the results yourself.  Not only that, but if yo happen to decide on a second opinion or know someone in the medical field you want to analyze it for you, you have it available. I have gotten copies of all my labs, PET scans, biopsy, MRI, Mammogram and Sonograms. 

    This is a good place to come for help, suggestions and support.  While I am not happy at all for the reason you are hear, I am happy that you have found this.  There are lots of good reference materials available too.  And from what I have read since my dx, you will get a lot of love, respect, kindness and prayers here.
