Been reading lots of good info on Vit D3 and wonder if you all could educate me on Calcium.
I was told this last week to have 1200 vit D and 2,000 calcium per day as I am starting Arimidex.
Has anyone found calcium in large dose but in small pill?? I would appreciate info. Thanks. Cathey from Indiana

Hi Cathey,
Most calcium tablets/capsules/chews are anywhere from 200- 600mg per dose. Calcium is such a big element that the tablets would be huge if they contained the standard 1,200mg dose. Plus, we can only absorb about 400-600mg at a time, so the doses have to be spaced out at least 4 hours apart anway. I take 400mg 4X per day.
Double check your recommended amount for vit D and calcium- I'm suspecting you have them turned around. Vit D tends to come in 1,000mg increments.

I found Douglas laboratories calcium citrate to be a doable size pill. Each tablet has 250 mgs of calcium. I could never take a large pill, this is a nice size.
You should be looking at taking at least 400-500 mgs of magnesium citrate an hour before taking calcium and D3. NOW has that, but it's a larger tablet. It can be broken up to powder form and added to juice if your not big on taking large looking pills. Mg aids in calcium absorption and does a bunch of other good things for us.

Rosemary: Have you tried Liquid Calcium??? I found it for sale at some sites. I dont know if it is as good as calcium citrate or carbonate pills. Thanks for the info about the smaller pill. I have been taking Viactiv which comes like a small piece of candy which each piece containing 500 mg of Calcium Carbonate and 200 IU of Vitamin D and 40 mkg of vit. K. Check out their site: www.viactiv.com Who sells the smaller pill you mentioned retail. Do you order it from Douglas lab?
Viactiv was recommended to me by my Med Onc. and comes in lots of flavors. Chocolate, Raseberry, Carmel, etc.
I took my first Arimidex pill this AM with Whole Wheat Cream of Wheat (new on the market). My hope is that I will have no s/e however I am experiencing some diarrea.
Thanks again Cathey from Indiana

Cathey,
I prefer citrate over carbonate. I use to take a liquid cal/mg from Oasis. I read that it was better to separate mg and calcium by taking them apart from each other so they both get an equal chance at being absorbed thus I gave it up the liquid. Was that ever easy to take.
I thought I found the perfect liquid calcium, no mg. I was besides myself. I bought 4 bottles. The last ingredient was splenda. I missed it. Splenda and any type of sugar is not good for our bones. Splenda is the worst though. The company should have known better. I wrote them, of course no reply.
You can get calcium citrate Douglas labs on-line. A lot of them sell it. Just look for the best price. Carbonate doesn't get the best press. Hard to absorb, could cause kidney stones, etc. If Viactiv ever went to citrate, I'd be all over it.
I remember the first day I took arimidex. I waited all day for side effects...nothing...I kept waiting for 5 years. Not much to report. I hope the same happens for you.

Thanks Rosemary for all the good information. Cathey

Thought I had found an answer and began crushing two calcium/D3 pills and adding the powder into my cream of wheat(whole grain) hot cereal and thinking that this works. Then after searching the net for more answers I find that I should not be adding vits to any whole grain as it hampers absorbtion of calcium. This is according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
It is very hard to find Calcium Citrate without soy or any form of soy. I am finding it hard to follow drs orders for 2000 Calcium and 1500 Vit. D3 daily, without any soy. I did however find a recipe for Total (cereal) cookies which are very high in Calcium. I think I will bake try them. Any suggestions for someone who finds it hard to swallow the large Calcium pills? Dr. Abraham has observed that calcium supplements are the biggest obstacle to iodine absorption.
Calcium also interferes with the thyroid.
Vitamin D will enable your body to absorb the calcium in your food without supplementing calcium. Osteoporosis isn't a mineral deficiency, it's an endocrine-caused ABSORPTION problem.
