Herceptin & shortness of breath
Does anyone get short of breath after their herceptin treatment? If so, does it go away after treatment ends? Does it get worse each time or is it cumulative? Does it damage the lungs?
Thanks, best to all undergoing treatment!!

My heart rate increased after herceptin treatment, it kinda felt like my heart was racing and sometimes caused me to take a big deep breath just to regulate my breathing, not sure if this is similar to what your experiencing, but the nurse explained that this was caused by the amount of fluid running through my body. It stopped a few days after treatement, I finished herceptin Dec 08 and haven't had any problems.

I just finished my year of Herceptin...and the doctor could not stress it enough that if I had any shortness of breath to call him...Thankfully I didn't have any problems..

Hi Liz, It's me Mary. I signed on this website so I could watch the replys and also to try to understand what is going on with Cheryl.
My question to all: Does anyone have or know someone who was diagnosed with "Fibrosis" while undergoing treatment with"Herceptin", Taxotere", etc. Our friend is experiencing "shortness" of breath and has been scheduled with a Pulmonary doctor. Her appointment is next Wednesday (April 29th).
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I just finished by chemo yesterday - yay! I had herceptin, taxotere & carboplatin ev 3 weeks x 6. I had a MUGA scan of my heart to make sure it was healthy before I started and 2-3 months into treatment - my heart was healthy. But yesterday when I went for my last chemo my onc asked me if I get winded and I said I have been. She was concerned & wants me to get another MUGA scan before proceeding with my year of herceptin. I can't complain since I have felt pretty good through it all - no throwing up or anything. I've just gotten really tired & my legs feel really weak from the last 2 treatments. Has anyone else experienced being winded while on herceptin & how is your heart? I have a family history of heart disease & it worries me. Thanks, Gail

Shortness of breath is a symptom of heart failure which is a side effect of Herceptin. How are your MUGA scan/echocardiogram results? Keep an eye on them and tell your onc you are short of breath.
It has been a year since I had heart damage from Herceptin and I am not all the way back. It happened 5 weeks after a normal MUGA so report shortness of breath to the doctor.

Did you have Herceptin for a whole year? Did they monitor your heart every 2-3 months? I go for my MUGA scan tomorrow. Thanks for your input.

I finished my TCH the last day of January and now have just herceptin every three weeks. At the end of chemo, I was very short of breath,I was anemic, as soon as my blood counts came back up,the shortness of breath went away.Another thing that can cause you to be short of breath is being out of shape. I was very sick through chemo and lost a lot of strength.Jackie

I am going towards my 4th cycle of chemo and get herceptin once every week. Yes, I have been and still am experiencing shortness of breath and increased pulse rate. I am also anemic. I read that shortness of breath/increased pulse rate is one of the effects of herceptin, and my onco confirmed that. Plus, I have been told that my anemia has something to do with it also. I had my heart checked as a routinary precaution a week after I had my first dose of herceptin and my onco said the results were okay. I'm not sure when I need to be checked again, though. So I guess what I am saying is that you are not alone in what you are experiencing.

My pulse was really fast too - I didn't know that was a side effect of herceptin. I got the results of my MUGA scan and my heart is healthy - I'm so relieved. So now on to radiation 5 days a week for 6 weeks & herceptin the rest of the year. My heart will probably be monitored every 3 months during the Herceptin. Thanks for all your help.

I'm having a strange sensation with Herceptin, too. (I have TCH so I suppose it could be the other medications and not the herceptin) I can't really tell if it is shortness of breath or my heart beating hard. It is uncomfortable and mostly noticeable when I exhale deeply. It almost feels like the sensation you get when something scares you and you have that pounding heart feeling in your chest. But I can't actually feel my heart physically pounding on the outside of my body like you can when you get scared.

weety911 - you should definitely let your onc know about these symptoms. I had TCH and I think the carbo made me short of breath. I also had a similar heart beating feeling, and that was caused by the steriod (dex). It could be the medication but you want to make sure with your doctor. Best to you!! lisa

Thanks Lisa,
I thought it might have been the steroid at first too, but this treatment I didn't feel it until almost 2 weeks after the chemo! The steroid, I am assuming, would have been out of my system by this time. I did have a nurse check my pulse and listen to my heart and lungs. Pulse was a little high--87--but still within normal limits. Lungs and heart sounded fine, she thinks. I will bring it up to my oncologist on Monday when I go for treatment #3.

I had a scare they found nodules on my right lung on the CT they did to set up rads. Did a bronchoscopy and turned out to be nothing, but pulmonary doc did notice a change in lining of lungs and said it could be from herceptin or from rads, so I have to do a pulmonary function test every 6 weeks until I am done with herceptin. I can easily go blow into a machine every 6 weeks until March to make sure my lungs stay OK. That may be why they listen to lungs and ask if you are out of breath each time you are there as well as watching for heart problems. They might not have known about this if I had not had bronchoscopy because I was not short of breath except after climbing 18 stairs to an office in the building where I work. I must say I am out of shape and that contributes too. Annette

Hello Ladies, I don't get short of breath after Herceptin however, I get very hoarse for one day after treatment. My MUGA scan said my heart was healthy. I don't know why I lose my voice?

Weety, I had shortness of breath at times when I was on chemo. I think it is partly the lower RBC, though from what you said on the TCH thread, yours isn't that low. I had it sometimes when mine wasn't all that low either. I haven't had the symptom since I've been done with chemo and taking only Herceptin.
