Megan, looks like fundraising is doing great. You will love the walk, the atmosphere and the spirit. Enjoy and have a good time. Beautiful picture of your Mom on your 3-Day page!

Thank you all!  The fundraising has gone better.  THank you so much Linda and Billie for your donations!  That was very, very generous of you!  I've got $406 to go.  The only thing is my friend that is flying in from Arizona to do the walk with me only has $1,202.  SO I'm hoping to get extra donations and give them to her.  Another crazy thing I found out about Komen is that if I do get donations to my website that exceed $2300 and I want to give some to my friend, they won't let me do it.  And if I get sick on the day of the walk and I want my brother to walk for me, from what I understand, that isn't allowed either.  Now that's just ridiculous.  ANyways, I'm hoping me and my friend both make our minimum.  Thank you all for your advice, comments, concern, and love!  I'll keep everyone updated.

    Thanks,

    Megan : )

I have checked out some BC fund raiser walks and found that at least one expects Volunteers to pay a registration fee.   This entitles the volunteer to a "free lunch" and a t shirt.   Maybe this way they guarantee that that slot if filled and the person shows up if he/she has paid a fee.

I volunteered for the Avon walk on the day before the event and there were quite a lot of people with signs sitting in the lobby with signs who had not raised their entire amount required for the walk.   That opened my eyes to the absurdity of it and I vowed not to involve myself with that kind of event again.

Some one day walks only require a registration fee and no promise of raising funds.  They allow the option of forming a team and setting a goal for raising funds on your own.  I do not know if you don't make the full amount if they still allow the team to walk.

Megan, the unfortunate thing is that Komen has been doing this for a while and they have been "successful" and I doubt that your complaints will make one bit of difference.     Good luck and HUGS,   Nancy

Hey Nancy, thanks for your posting.  I understand that my complaints to them will more than likely not have an effect, but it will make me feel better to be heard.  My friend that's trying to walk with me will likely complain.  I know that if enough people do, there might be a change.  But I'm still gonna try.  I'd be mad at myself if I didn't.  I'll let you know what they say.

    Thanks,

    Megan

In the Philadelphia area, the Komen walk that takes place on Mother's Day has a modest registration fee to participate.  The Komen 3-day that is coming up this month requires a significant fundraising commitment to participate.  I can understand that the logistics of putting together a 3-day walk are daunting, and that the fundraising commitment may be a way of making sure that the event actually raises a large amount of money for the cause rather than just have a huge social event.

*shaking head* - so much stuff to deal with.....  Good luck Megan!  These organizations get a huge tax write off - what the hell are they doing to us?

    Hi Megan --

I am in the same boat as you are. I've tried very hard to raise this money. Had a few rough areas, just family issues that prevented me to keep fundraising, but I've worked very hard.  I think 2,300 is way to much. I think 1,000 may be a good limit, but with the economy the way it is I still feel that is a bit much.  I just had a beef and beer and raised $800 from that and silent acutions and change jars, but I'm still 1,000 left with the event in less than 2 weeks. I've done so much work and I'm just a student in school who's working a part time job, so it's not easy at all. I may take the money I earn and walk another walk for Breast Cancer it's a one day walk 3 miles I believe it's in NJ. Me and my mom wanted to do this walk, for the emotional experience, for the uplifting feeling it gives people, but we're unable to because we were not able to raise the money.  We could do all the complaining in the world but I don't know that it will do any good. It's just good to know that the money raise will go to people who really need it and those who are suffering, and those who are looking for the cure. It's very discouraging not getting the amount that you need, especially if you know someone who has or has had cancer, it's very close and near to your heart.  I wish you the best of luck with this!

    Megan,

Its good to know that your fundraising is going well.  I am sure your mother will be very proud no matter what your end dollar amount is.

I just had to respond to the question about the CEO pay for SGK or BCO.  I worked for a financial institution (who shall remain nameless, but let's just say they spent a lot of time in the news last year) where the CEO made 17 million dollars.  I didn't make nearly that much and I think that kind of money is insane for anyone.  However, if you look at any CEO pay for any large company, I think you will find that 450,000 is really quite modest.  These people are in charge of hundreds of millions of dollars that they must deal with responsibly.  How much would they have to pay you to have that kind of stress?  If they were really in it for the money, they would go be a CEO in the private sector where there salary would be significantly higher.  I think it is disrespectful to assume that their hearts aren't in the right place.

Everyone has to donate or participate in the charities of their choice and I absolutely respect our rights to do that.  I will continue to support Susan G. Komen because the money they raise DOES make a difference and if it continues to do so, then I say the CEO deserves the 450,000.00 per year.

I have my issues with Komen, with where the money goes and with their overall messaging that I believe tends to overlook those of us LIVING WITH cancer.  That said, I wonder if you can go to the local merchants and in exchange for your writing their store's name on your shirt or hat, would they donate $100?  When I worked, I used to approve such PR for my company and it was a no brainer.

Is it possible that you can take down the information of those who donate and give it to your friend so that she can input it to her site?

     Cheers,

    Caryn

I think you should call and ask about it. Some walks are put on by Susan G Komen and some are by affiliates of Susan G Komen. I would think any amount of money raised would be great.

    Take care,

    Michele

I did not read the whole thread, but maybe you can combine your $ and one of you can register and then both of you do it on the day of the event. They can't stop you.
