Her2+ symptoms

I am curious what symptoms were noticed prior to being diagnosed with her2+ (if any), and what symptoms were experienced if you had mets.  I felt really sick prior to being diagnosed with bc, I was unable to sleep, had numbness in my arms, would wake up feeling really sick at night.  This may be unrelated to my her2+ diagnosis.  I would love to hear comments on this.

My last scan was clear - 7 months post surgery (no chemo or radiation), but I still have night sweats, and my periods are regular.  I am going to make an appointment with an onco to get authorization for my year scan.  In Oct, it will be one year post surgery.  So, I will update then.

I am also looking at taking herceptin comined with avastin, but i do not want to be on the drug long term, so I need to discuss that with an oncologist.

I actually was gaining weight, had a cold that wouldn't go away 1 1/2 months sick, tired, and felt like I had milk letting down every once and a while.

I saw 4 onc's they all recommended chemo and rads.  I declined.  However, her2+ had a high reoccurence rate prior to the days of herceptin.  I am looking at doing one of two things, either avastin with herceptin (currently in trials) or I will wait for the her2 vaccine to complete trials, or be in phase III of the trials.  I had a really bad cold/flu that lasted for weeks, one or two months prior to discovering my tumor. I was rundown and tired and my immune system was severely challenged. I have also read that her2 is linked to a rat virus.  If so, a vaccine would make a lot of sense.

Also I was breastfeeding at the time of diagnosis, and 4 months after stopping, when I did surgery, there was still breastmilk in my breasts.

Waterlady did you do Herceptin when diagnosed or surgery or are you just waiting for the trials?
There is a great lady on the boards who did the vaccine and she states the trial team say it is very promising.

I am taking Taxol and Herceptin. Please keep me posted on how you are doing.Welcome,,,,, this is a great site!   AmySmile

    Hi Waterlady,

My mum had no symtoms prior to getting orginal dx with ER/PR -, HER2 + which was picked up early in a mamogram. With mets its totally different, mum had mets to lungs so felt like the flu - out of breath etc and she felt tired, off colour, is the only way to put it for about 6 months and lost a little weight with mets dx. Looking back it should have been more obviousy. After the original chemo / herceptin 5 years ago she had lots of weird and wonderful side effects, we are not sure if they were from the drugs, we just blamed it on them anyhow Wink Night sweats, certain foods went straight though, fatigue! etc But i really think herceptin is fantastic and these new herceptin drugs & vacines seem really promising!! Goodluck to you all Mel

Do you mind me asking if your mom had Herceptin with first dx? Many didn't get it in 2004 unless later stage was not sure if early stagers were gettin Herceptin in 2004

Hey mmm5, no problems, mum dx in Sept 2004, finished chemo late dec 2004, about? late 2005 early 2006 our onc informed us of mums her 2 status, and about herceptin which was available to early stage in Oz but you had to pay for it, our family and my mums work raised the money which was about $3000 per treatment, it ended up coming on the free list 1/2 through her treatment. At the time herceptin was new and the stats were promising we didnt want to risk not having it. She had a full years worth and no other treatment afterwards.

mmm5, I haven't done anything yet besides the surgery, which may be really stupid, but I really want to hold out for the vaccine.   I may not be able to, as I know there is a high rate of reoccurence, especially with my FISH results.  Her2+  4.3, grade 3, 22/28 etc. I am looking at doing herceptin with something, and I will discuss it with an oncologist at the end of October.  However, if my scans are clear, I may do nothing, just wait.  I do however, still have nightsweats, have difficulty sleeping and feel sick, which like others on this board, I put down to imbalanced hormones, or thyroid problems, and I think I may be  very wrong.  I will update as I go along.  Would love to chat to the lady about the vaccine.

    Hi,

I had no symptoms prior to finding the lump in my breast. I was scheduled for mammos every 2 yrs and had missed one so it had been 4 yrs since last one. The weekend prior to finding the lump, I had felt nothng unusual and had been doing self exams approximately every 3-4 mths.  The weekend that I found the lump, it was approximately the size of an orange or large lemon. I was a very healthy active woman prior to diagnosis. I had no illnesses other than my asthma which I have suffered due to allergies for over a decade.

I have had neoadjuvant A/C chemo, 2 surgeries (mastectomy and then TE replacement), adjuvant Taxol and Herceptin chemo, 7 weeks of radiation, and stopped Herceptin due to heart failure after 4 mths of infusions. I am due to have surgery this next month for recon. I am considering the DIEP.  I suffer from SEs of the chemo still, but as I said had no symptoms prior to the lump.

    Hi Waterlady,

My dx was  DCIS, stage1  micro-invasive, grade 3, e and p - and hert2+. I had a left mastectomy (April 23, 2008)no reconstruction. Oncologist suggested chemo and Herceptin, which I declined. Saw a different Oncologist, same plan and I declined it, but she was more human, the other one had no bedside manners, he was like do it or die. This year in April I had LCIS in the other breast  e and p + and hert2-,totally  the opposite as the previous one, had a surgical biopsy, since that is not considered cancer, is a marker for maybe having one in the future, or the say it was maybe the one I already had. I am taking Tamoxifen which I was very insecure but I decided to take it, it's been only a week and I am great..........so we'll see it is planned for five years. Let me know how you feel and hopefully we will keep being healthy. Have you change any daily habits in your life? Hoew are they going to follow you up. Good luck and write back. Thank you.

I didn't have any symptoms prior to finding the lump in early May, butI know for a fact I had no palpable lump in April, so it grew fast.  In that time I've developed a cough and am exhausted all the time.  I had a chest x-ray, which was clear, so hopefully the cough is just irritation due to the cancer being close to the chest wall.  I also have lots of burning pain and aching in the affected breast, and the lump has gotten bigger.

I've had no treatment yet - meet with the PS on Monday and should be scheduled for surgery shortly after.

I don't know what my chemo regimin will be but certainly willl do herceptin.

Waterlady - with your pathology, I am surprised you haven't already been seen by an oncologist (or did I miss reading something?) Your risk for recurrence - and mets - is very high with 22 positive nodes, Stage 3 and Grade 3............did your surgeon explain this to you? Even though my Her2++++ tumor was "only" .9cm and I had negative nodes - and even though I had a mastectomy - my medical oncologist STRONGLY recommended chemo with Herceptin because Her2 positive BC is VERY nasty - and often attacks the brain. I do hope and pray this doesn't happen to you! For more information and support, please visit www.her2support.org.

I had absolutely no symptoms prior to my dx. I had just lost a bunch of weight (about 35 lbs over a year) and I believe the smaller breast size helped me to find the lump.  But I felt healthier and stronger than I had in years. Absolutely no symptoms at all, which made it all the more shocking.

But I also believe that my high state of wellness helped me get through chemo and rads more easily than if I had gone into them in a weakened condition.

I had insomnia, which I'd never suffered from, a few months before diagnosis. I also felt tired.

Waterlady, don't wanna worry you, but I agree with swimangel, Her2 is very aggressive.  I would not want to 'wait' for trials.

Chemo is especially good for 'fast' growing cells.  Her2 is very fast growing.  I had a clear mammogram and then 5 months later I found the lump in the shower 5 months later, and I was not even looking for lumps.

May I ask why you have turned down Herceptin?

I had numbess in my arm when I slept only on the left side where my breast cance was found. I also had a very weird symptom. I had flashes of heat radiating on the lower half of my breast up to my axilla. It happened once a day. I think this was the cancer traveling in my lymph glands. I was found to have 1 node with atypical cells but no cancer micromets. I've had that feeling once or twice since having my mastectomy which worries me but I am getting chemo now. Also, another thing that may be unrelated. I read an article on this website that linked wet earwax to breast cancer. I did have that in my left ear and once I had the mastectomy it stopped. My throat was also always coated with a film which has since stopped since starting chemo.

I didn't have any symptoms.  I felt great.  Clear mammo and sonogram.  Just a lump that appeared one day and seemed to get larger by the day.

I had no symptoms prior to diagnosis. The lump (approx. 1 cm.) wasn't palpable on examination--and after a while it felt like every MD in the Boston area had palpated it.

I felt great, had no symptoms & no family history of bc at diagnosis at age 48.  I was multi-focal, triple positive, stage 3 with 5+ nodes and a kindergartner.  I wanted my docs to throw everything possible at the cancer, and was so grateful to get herceptin, as being her2+ scared the pants off me & I wasn't feeling particularly lucky.

    my best to you, p~

I noticed my lump in my right breast when I was 8 weeks pregnant (first pregnancy) at 38 years old in September 2009. I was hoping it was related to the pregnancy, had it checked out the week I noticed it at my pregnacy check-up. Up until then I was working a full-time job and working a week-end part-time job, plus taking 3 night school courses and completing home reno's all at the same time. Besides feeling a little tired and a cough (that was on & off for 1-2 months-thought it might be allergies). I felt fine...I didn't even have pregnancy related sickness. I ended up having a miscarriage at 9.5 (during the time) it took to be diagnosed :(

    Hi Carcharm,

I too experienced what I would call a heated "chemical" hot flashes to my upper chest, immediately after my FNA biopsy and mammogram (same day). It would occur it seems every 30 seconds for about a week or so. It really scared me!!! I would explain this sensation to my Family doctor and to the surgeon. They chalked it up as hormones as I was pregnant and lost the baby at 9.5 weeks during the time this was all happening. Guess I will never know.

No symptoms what so ever. Just my biannual mammogram picked it up - which was lucky because it was lobular and it often doesn't show up.

I lost about 40# within less than a year before I was diagnosed. I was happy that I was loosing that weight so easily just by what I thought was watching what I ate.  I remember talking with a friend and she was saying how it was strange that I was able to lose so much without a dieting/exercising program and I jokingly said " well, I probably have cancer and don't know it". shortly after that my hubby found my lump. thank god for boob loving guys Wink
