Dark Chocolate as a food group! LOL LOVE IT!
-
Deanna: love your doctor's chart.
-
Oh Deanna, I want a copy of that chart, we may have to go in commando fatigues and steal it! haha!! That's GREAT!!
Deanna, what does the Iodoral do what is it exactly? Please explain to me the ignorant one...LOL! I may want to look into that.
Yesterday, walked at lunch, we were supposed to get a high of 85 and it was so pretty out so I thought I'd walk the hilly trails behind the office. It got rather hot! I was really sweating all over, which ain't pretty in your work clothes. Then these 2 cute ladies from a building over passed me coming down the hill as I was going up and they always change into cute little exercise outfits, smarties!! haha I'm just jealous!! But I walked over 2 miles and managed the hills, but I was huffin and puffin and sweatin...but did notice I sure aggravated the hip area, darn it!!
DH had come home, DD came over with her doggies for dinner and then we walked them to the dog park. I was sooo happy!! Lots of smiles and laughs from this girl!!
It's Friday!! YAY! Here's a funny one:

Kari ~ Have you seen the thread, "Iodine, thyroid and breast cancer?" I'm a novice at understanding it, but there seems to be a real connection between low thyroid and breast cancer. Also the traditional thyroid tests we get show the amount of hormone in our blood, but not our tissues, so it's evidently possible for our thyroid readings to be "normal," yet we still aren't functioning up to par, and this is where the cold hands and feet come in. I'm sure vivre can explain it a lot better, but the bottom line is that some women add an iodine supplement like Iodoral to their nutrition regimen, which is what I started doing a couple of months ago. I've had cold hands and feet, as well as a slightly lower body temp for as long as I can remember, but both "symptoms" have normalized since I started taking Iodoral.
As far as that pyramid chart goes, I was wondering after I posted about it why grains and legumes weren't on it. I'll have to ask about that the next time I'm there, or maybe I'll even call and ask one of the gals at the front desk about it. Seems like a pretty major oversight!
Have a great weekend, everyone! Deanna
-
Deanna, that's interesting, they've tested my thyroid a couple of times and got normal results. But my body temp reads low too...so you've noticed a difference, that is intriguing to me. Did you talk to your doc about it or did you start taking the iodoral on your own. Is it something that you shouldn't take too much of, like the Vit. D debate??
I better check out that thread, thanks! And I was wondering about the grains and legumes also after I posted.

Afternoon all! Went to the Dermatologist today. I thought I only had one spot for him to check but he found five basil cell spots that he "shaved" and froze two spots on my nose. Too much sun when I was little. Have to be careful walking the dog for the next few days. Had a spot on each shin. Other than walking I have slowed down since mowing. Start nights today (Fri) for the next 7 nights. Seafood fest is this weekend so there will be alot of traffic. UGH! 77 right now but was in the 60's this morning. They had frost back home so I'm not looking forward to the cold next week. A friend of mine had to carry the little hand warmers and they have foot warmers too, I used them when I worked at the High school sport activities. Everyone have a great weekend while I work. At least Helena is half way through hers!
Spring - I was told both rads and chemo worked on the blood. How I don't know. They said my blood should be back to normal a uear after rads. go figure. It is coming up slow.
-
Kari-I could not accept the iodine theory for the longest time, but the more I read, the more it hit home with me. Check out the iodine thread as deanna said and read about the studies to the link between low iodine and breast cancer at breastcancerchoices.org. There are doctors who have proven that this is the best preventative for bc. After a few months of iodine therapy, my breast and a half have noticebly changed-softened, no pains, the scars are disappearing, and I think it is breaking up the aftereffects of the rads. I cannot tell you how much different I feel. BCA is doing a study and proving that women who take iodine have no recurrances. I think, when their study is complete, tamox and all those other drugs will be tossed in the trash for this safer protocol.
It is cold and dreary today, but I am celebrating the fact that my city lost the Olympic bid! I hope this marks the beginning of weeding out the corruption that has tainted what I believe is the most beautiful city in the world. I sure hope things start to CHANGE now!

Morning all,
Yes I have been a big fat lurker. Joy it is Saturday morning here... 6.22am to be precise and I am just about to take DD (dog) for a nice long walk. It is going to be 34 here today (sorry that is 93 to you guys) so getting out early. School holidays have started too so I need to get out b4 DH heads off to work for the next 2 weeks. It is hard but really good motivator to get out of bed and into the day.
Still can't run yet from my fipple op and feel sooooo flabby. Have decided to forego my corrective surgery till next year so I can get back into shape both physically and mentally (and emotionally) b4 going under the knife again. All this recovery is the pits.
I can't believe it has been 4 weeks already Spring. Bet it has felt like 8 to you though! Hope you are healing well. hugs.
Also started painting (house renovation kind) and it feels so great to be doing "normal" things again and looking forward to planning big projects around the house. Is that excitement and contentment creeping back in?????
I too am a cold fish - I have to take a jacket to work because the boys love the airconditioner, and I have an iceblock and need to rug up afterwards.
Thanx for all your inspirations ladies and you don't know what it means to be remembered when I am so absent.
soft hugs
Helena
PS. Not a chocolate lover, bit of an addiction to salt and loooovvveee nuts - macadamia, cashew, almonds, brazil ...mmmmm
-
Vivre, thanks for the info, I am going to do some research and discuss this with my onc. I thought of you this week regarding the Olympics and I didn't think you'd want it there! Glad you got your wish! Here's to change for your city!!
Joy, hope you have a easy going work weekend! and enjoy going home next week, even if you freeze your tushy off!! heehee
Helena, nice and hot for you today! Glad to see you popped back here!!
Turning off my heater under my desk now...gosh all the girls here have heaters under their desks, its ridiculous!! Yummy...nuts!! love those too!
I posted this on the B.O.T. thread:
ok, so my DH picked me up for lunch and while at lunch, we ran into a couple we used to live by a couple years ago, Pam and Mike. Pam comes up to our table and says "did you hear about what happened to me? I had a melanoma mole taken off my back in 2003 and thought nothing of it. Well...a few times in my car I would get dizzy or a headache and I went to the doc. It was my eye doc that ordered some tests...I had a brain tumor from the melanoma!! Had gamma knife surgery, then developed a staph infection and they had to do another craniotomy on me and Radiation. I got the runaround at first, went to USC and to other docs but ended up at UCSF and they did the surgery. I've found a great onc locally and she is working with my nutritionist. They told me I was going to die. I've totally changed my diet, try to do the macrobiotic diet, today is the first day in 2 wks I am eating bread...Have your Vitamin D level checked! and they monitor my copper....I'm feeling great now and doing great"
So then my DH tells her about my BC and she was like wide eyed..."what?" anyhoo, you get the drift....
'C' is everywhere!!!!!!!!!!! But she is doing great and she does look good. I emailed her asking her what her nutritionist and onc have told her as far as beating recurrence. She said "I think my nutritionist works with breast cancer too".
We had to talk quick as I was on my lunch hour and her DH was sitting there waiting for her to start eating lunch!
-
Meg, we were cross posting, funny about your previous 4 food groups! LOL!!
-
Hi Ladies -
I haven't posted for a quite a long time on this thread as I've had no motivation; thus no exercising has been happening aside from my squats and pushups. I need to get back to running - but I can't for some reason - just don't want to go.
All of the talk of Montreal and the cold...brrr. I lived in upstate NY for five years (Plattsburgh) not too far south from the Quebec border (about 20 minutes). I remember winters when the temp wouldn't get above 0 degrees F. I did love it there even with the cold. Beautiful country and people.
Joy - I am sorry to hear about your basal cell spots! My internal medicine doc recommended I see a dermatologist and I kept putting off making the appt. Then in the shower one day, I realized these two darkish spots with crusty (sorry gross) tops had been on my shin for a year. My appt. is Tuesday and I am almost positive these spots are not good.
Again, reading through all of your posts have given me some motivation and I am going to TRY and take DD (love that) for a walk tomorrow morning in the park if it's not raining and cold.
Have a wonderful weekend ladies!
Raye
-
Just back from my walk and wanted to send a big thankyou all the way from Oz. Meg, LOL - Kari - you and your cross posting (dressing ...) and Raye - this place gets you all fired up.
Tried waving but DD kept jumping up on me.
Have a wonderful wonderful day/nite everyone.
-
Hi Raye, Keep us posted on your appt. next Tuesday!! Hope you find some motivation too!!
HELENA - Look at you, you gorgeous one!! And your DD is soooo cute and fluffy! and the view! Ok, dig my list out of your crate and put in BIG CAPS - OZ & Helena!!!!!
-
Helena, your arms look buff!
Another mile today, AND I planted 4 Mauntaulk Daisies in the garden. No bra today. The bra is the killer, today I took a break!
Joy, a friggin YEAR after rads ends!!! Ahhhck! I have 5 months to go. Cripes!!! Don't you want to be beyond the after effects of this? I DO!!! Maybe 2010 is our year...
Spring.

Yes, dark chocolate a food group!! Dove chocolate here I come!!!
I worked out today and it felt great- in spite of the low wbc.
Well, I am a midwesterner who lived in California for many years and now that I am BACk in the good ol northern-midwestern state of Michigan, I still miss running in California weather. THE best, I gotta say. Summers in Michigan are so humid, I have a much harder time. So, DEANNA, a challenge????? hm.......okay. When's the race? LOL.
have a nice Friday!!!!
-
Hi ladies have not been on the bandwagon. Last week I was on the beach in Jamaica this week had my second mast so am recoverying with drains etc. and waiting for more pathology reports. Not in a motivation frame of mind. It will be another week or so before I can hit the gym.
Today is the Run For The Cure here in Ontario My goal is to be in shape enough to join in next year with my daughter.
-
My goodness Muma-You take more vacations than Obama! LOL Too bad you can't use Airforce 1 and travel in style. I am still gloating that he lost the Olympics and my great city will be saved from the financial ruin and corruption that would have been rampant. Yesterday, was like Christmas. I am still smiling! Maybe I will even take a vacation too. You could at least be our travel advisor.
This month marks 2 years since my dx. I cannot believe how fast the time flew. I never thought I would ever be at the place I am at now. I can honestly say that having cancer forced me to look at my life and make the changes that have made me happier and healthier than I ever was before bc. The other day I was carrying in a 40 pound bag of salt for the water softener. As I was trying to lug it in, I had an aha moment. I realized that this was exactly how much weight I have lost! I cannot believe I carried all of that around with me all the time. No wonder my step is lighter now. So I hope that motivates you all who are still working on your recovery. Life can be great after cancer. It is all about what road you choose to take. Keep walking and you will get there!
-
Raye - I am sure your DD will love you for it! Mine sits here and hits me with her paw to let me know she wants to go for a walk. If I open the door to let her out she sits down like saying "not without you". So I have to walk her. My doogie sitter thought she was rotten in the spring wait till she gets her next week.
I had two spots on my upper arm and one on my shoulder I couldn't see. The one on my shin came up and they bleed for no reason at all. Like a shaver cut. But I haven't shaved that day. Definitly get them checked. They aren't life threatening, at least mine aren't, but they just get bigger. I don't want any type of cancer on me!!
My "yoga nurse" ordered a hat and said she will wear it proudly. "F--- Cancer!" with pink letters on a brown hat. Sounds like someting my son would wear.
One walk down and one more time before I go to work. I let the mutt swim in the pond this morning. At least it wears her out. I think she likes to hear the water slush. It is only 76 at this time. Better straighen my home up some. With it just me I get lazy. Have a great one. Joy
-
You gals with dogs are so lucky to have someone who makes you go out. When I was on chemo, I would go out for an evening walk with my then 17 year old dog Mandy. By the end of chemo I had slowed down quite a bit and so had she....so her pace was perfect for me. I am trying to figure out whether to get another dog since she passed, but I have to wait a bit longer.
-
Hi all, shout outs to all on this beautiful Saturday. Just checkin' in quickly...
nice walk after dinner last night with DH after it got dark. It was in the 70's and just gorgeous. The sky was red and pink where the sun was going down.
Spring, you're doing so great!
Gotta run....hugs to all!
-
Mum you take care, speedy recovery. Spring same to you although, you do seem to be bouncing back very nicely. Joy, you watch those spots!
As for the chocolate, can't say i really like dark chocolate cause i really don't! Guess I will have to try.
Went to my 25th high school reunion last night. Was very nervous and thought I would only stay an hour or so. Hubby called at 1230 to see if I was okay, wow the time flew by. Some people have changed some haven't. Some are very caught up in the I am really someone game and others just live and enjoy life. I enjoyed the latter better. Caught up with an old pal, could have cried it was so great to see him again, he's a bit heavier (who isn't) but looks the same and is the same sweet down to earth person he used to be. Great visit with all though.
Well you all enjoy your good weather, weather man states we will get snow tonight, actually feels like it too! Hopefully he is wrong.
Have a great one!
-
Whew! I just read pages of posts and now my mind is almost blank. Welcome to the new folks, hope and energy to the folks battling to find and keep motivation, kudos to those of you who have been working toward or meeting your goals!
I was sick most of the week (thankfully, no flu), and I still managed to walk or otherwise exercise at least 30 minutes each day. Although I am grateful for having a good or good enough workout every one of the last 29 days (YEA!), I admit to occasionally being envious of those who are so much more fit than I am and can actually manage activities that require real endurance. I guess I am my toughest critic (what a surprise...), and I must focus as much as possible on what I can do as well as how my ability is changing bit by bit. Like some of the others posting here, chemo really knocked me for a loop and the recovery is amazingly time and energy consuming. And the tamoxifatigue--YIKES! Okay--reality check: I AM improving and I WILL continue to build my strength and endurance!
-
Brenda--good 'self talk" !
Glad you are feeling better...
I made it to the gym yesterday and a tough yoga class this morning. Some of the poses were hard to hold although I found if I counted out--like ok, hold it 3 more counts--then I could. But felt so good afterwards. We also walked (don't know how far it is) to the park last night for a huge music festival--saw Lyle Lovett who was amazing. Had this big band with him--really fun although haven't been in a crowd that size in a while--yikes! it was free so you got a little bit of everyone there--great people watching!
Kari-make sure to research the iodine stuff. I know some people swear by it, and glad to hear it works for them--probably would work for me as I've always had cold hands and feet! But I would hate to screw up my thyroid...and my tests came back with it in normal range also. Deanna--glad you have had luck with it. The thyroid is also connected to metabolism, right? If so, I will take cold hands over slowing down my metabolism (and having to eat less!)--ha! Would be wonderful though if there was a BC connection...
Helena--beautiful pic! Hope it rains soon--poor koalas!
-
Brenda, I know, I'm so proud of running during parts of my work out, and have a friend training for a marathon, comparing workouts is an automatic feelings of inadequacy event.
Speaking of which. Got on the treadmill to watch the end of the MSU and U of M game. Thinking, well that will pass some time and make for a good workout that seems to pass fast. They went into OVERTIME! OMG, my legs are spaghetti right now, because of course I couldn't stop and had to finish through to the end of the game. (It did keep your attention though)

Hello All -
Mum - I hope you are feeling better and that your recovery will go well.
Spring - you put me to shame - I still haven't gone back to walking but i'm still Wii Fitting daily!!!
Kari - I hope you enjoy that book - I haven't read it but Maeve Binchy is a good read at the best of times.
Penny - Hope you are improving all the time.
Allie - Good on you for heading off to the gym:-). Yoga can be really satisfying!! I keep using the cold and wet weather as an excuse not to go out walking and that's during a stretch of good weather!! It was about 53 degrees here today and raining. But I don't do very well in the heat either.!!
Deanna - How do you survive in heat like that??? I did holiday in CA in April 2000 and found it very hot but we had a super holiday. I like your dr's food pyramid - but I was never good with shapes so I just might ‘accidently' turned my pyramid upside down!!
Joy - So sorry to hear about the spots - I hope the shaving wasn't too uncomfortable.
Vivre - Wohoo 2 years down the road, hoorah!!
Brenda - I'm sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well - I will do some extra Wii Fit for you tomorrow after all you kept my exercise going for me while I wasn't able for it a few weeks ago. I'm sure you'll be 100 % very soon you are right it will and does get better!!!
Meg , Raye, Helena, Jess, pk - Hello hope you are having a good weekend - I hope I haven't forgotten anyone!!!
And I thought I'd leave you with something that someone at my support group showed me
-
2 miles today!
-
YOU GO GIRL!! WE'RE ALL WALKING WITH YOU !
-
Ainm: too funny, I already passed it along to a few who would enjoy it. If DH had laughed one more minute he might have been in trouble from one of those dwarfs.
-
Meg is right, one can't compare themselves to the others. The idea is to get up and do something .
Anyway it did snow here last night. There is snow on the roof and car but melted on the roads. It won't last but the change in air pressures has given me a migraine, going to go rest and take my meds. Have a great week everyone.
-
Vivre, there were fireworks over downtown Lincoln last night and I thought of you and your "2 year survivor birthday"!! YAY
Mum, gentle healing to you
Spring, 2 miles!! how did that feel?? You're doing great
Ainm, the Wii Fit daily, you ROCK!! 53 and rainy, yuk!
I have found myself sometimes saying wow so-and-so walks really far, but then like Meg says, then I say to myself, well I am different than everyone else, etc. and I do what I can and what's right for me! We all rock and we are all unique and beautiful!!
Some sad news yesterday. Some of you will remember Carissa (my DD's close friend) who was hit on her scooter by the red-light runner a few months back....well her little baby Cecilia was due to be delivered in less than 3 weeks. Yesterday they couldn't find her heartbeat...shoot I am crying again...anyway, she was moving around just the other day...you know...and she died in the womb, and Carissa had to deliver her last night, she got to hold her and her and her DH Matt came home this a.m. to the nursery and everything minus baby Cecilia. My DD just talked to her and will go visit her after she gets some sleep, she just pulled a 12 hour night shift. Please say prayers for them. I can NOT even imagine this kind of pain.
I have to pull myself together and get showered now. Am driving 100 miles to spend the day with my best girlfriend.
Hugs to all that need it. I know I need one. Let's keep motivated and moving and beat recurrence together! Love you girls
