When did you find out you had breast cancer??
Did you do the self exam first?
Or see a doctor for a mammogram?
I know of a few ppl who had breast cancer for some time but never went into the doctor causing it to get worsse.

Self exam (well, found a lump accidentally, it wasn't really an exam!)
Thank goodness I didn't wait for a mammo, as who knows how bad it would have been by then! I found my lump at age 33, and mammo's aren't usually until 40.

I had 'suspicious calcifications' on a routine mammogram. A biopsy showed LCIS. An excision showed LCIS and ALH. These normally do not reliably show up on any imaging or clinical exam, and are an incidental finding.

May I ask why you want to know? I notice that you are new to the board and this is your only post so I'm curious as to why you are curious about this.
-
Im working on a project in school and I want to know more about breast cancer. My best friends mother was just diagnosed with it and I'm curious.

The PA found my lump during an annual exam...the mammo didn't catch it nor did I

I felt mine. It is close to the surface right where the bra comes across at an angle. My bra didn't fit just right and I was moving it over and felt it. It felt like a thickening and not really a lump. This was in August, 09. I had a mammogram in Nov, 08 and it was fine. I had a fine needle aspiration that said no cancer, then a core biopsy that said it was cancer.
I am having a bilateral mastectomy on 10/9 with immediate DIEP reconstruction.

This is really "back in the day! (1992)" I was originally a nurse and pretty aware of my body. After showering I discovered "a small rock" in my R breast. Saw a female gyn, she said " nothing serious--come back in a month"--She actually put me on hormones which I was smart enough not to take. I ignored her advice and went to a surgeon I trusted--he did a biopsy the next day, and I had a partial mastectomy 2 days later. I was 52 and just separated from my husband. The surgeon was extraordinay--got clean margins; I did radiation and tamoxifen, and give thanks every day. Lynne

I felt mine during a self exam. I had a really weird dream a couple nights later. In my dream I died (not from BC). I did a google query on dream interpretation and when you die in your dreams it means a massive change was coming in your life. I knew I had cancer.Call me weird, but that is how I found my lump. I was not even slightly surprised when my biopsy came back positive.

I found mine (twice, five years apart) through routine mammograms. It could not be felt by me, a nurse or the surgeon even when the surgeon knew where it was. Breast self exams would never have detected mine either time.

I noticed my nipple turning inward. Something in the back recesses of my mind reminded me that an inverted nipple was a sign of cancer. (This fact is not widely published.) My gyn couldn't feel a lump but thankfully sent me for a mammogram. The mammo showed 2 questionable spots that didn't show up a mammo taken 7 months before. I had a mastectomy. Now ever lump & bump gets my full attention!

Diagnosed age 47 years. Negative mammogram and ultrasound, but had a hard lump that appeared out of nowhere. Also had no family history. I pushed for a biopsy and that is when it was found. For me, all the testing was useless. Just prior to the lump (a couple of weeks) I underwent a full annual GYN examination and all was normal.

I was woken by severe pain in my left breast about 5am. I have quite a high pain threshold but needed to take paracetemol to gte back to sleep. Breast seemed a bit swollen and as that went down eventually found lump but it was very hard to feel and I had already made a Dr. appointment as I knew the pain was not normal.
Have been having regular mammo's since turning 40, every 2 years, and was due for my next one 2 months later.

I had no lump I just had what looked to be dermatitis. I went for a mammogram which came back negative. The way that I found out that I had cancer was through a biopsy of the area that had the dermatitis.
The type of bc that I had (Inflammatory BC) does not show up on mammogram the only way to get a dx is through a biopsy.
I currently see my oncologist every three months and have scans once a year, and blood work every 6 months or sooner if needed.
Good Luck with your project. Just a suggestion have your friends mom check out this web site everyone here is family and very supportive. She can come here day or night and someone will be here to answer any question she may have.
Hugs
Laura

bloody nipple discharge.-followed by mammogram and ultrasound that showed Nothing. Biopsy diagnosed it.
-
Bloody nipple discharge, useless mammogram, horrible ductogram.First noticed symptoms on sept 15th 2007 and was diagnosed on July 31st 2008.Almost a year, useless tests, waste of time.No one took me seriously.

I found mine by accident one night while I was lying in bed. I woke up with an itch close to my left underarm. I was lying on my side. I went to scratch the itch and felt a large mass in my left breast.
within a week, I'd had a mammo, ultrasound and a biopsy. My ob/gyn told me I had breast cancer before I even had the biopsy done. I couldn't understand how they could tell without the biopsy, so I held onto hope he was wrong. I got the call that the biopsy showed it was cancer, while I was at work. Not a good place to be when you get 'that call'. :P

Mine was discovered after a routine (digital) mammogram (calcifications, no 'lump' per se).

I had my annual mammogram in June 09 and left on vacation. Two weeks later when I returned, there was a message for me to come in for a few more views. They did an ultrasound also and the Dr. came in and said I should get a surgeon for a biopsy. I had a needle biopsy about a week later. About 3 or 4 days later I found out that it was positive for cancer. On intake, they took my family history and the first appointment with my cancer surgeon, he took my blood for genetic testing. I tested positive for the Braca gene mutation. I had a lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy. Samples were sent to CA (Mammaprint) to rate the aggressiveness and reccommend course of treatment. I needed chemo which began Aug.1st. I had two chemicals every 4 weeks. My last treatment was Nov.2, 2009. I had a complete mastectomy on Nov. 23, 2009. On April 9, 2010, I had a complete hysterectomy because the Braca mutation will increase chances of Ovarian cancer. Today I am cancer-free and starting my reconstruction. Two other women at my workplace have just been diagnosed with breast cancer. I am so happy to be able to help someone else.

I had the same thing- It was discovered by routine mammo and ultrasound. No doctors could feel it even knowing where it was. I had a stinging sensation on the side and deep in my left breast. I felt and pushed around the area and felt nothing. I thought that maybe my bra was at fault. I went the next week for a mammo and it was found- Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.
