AFTER RADIATION
I have 5 more booster to go, I asked today, what happens after that??? I was told that in about a month I would come in for the DR to check my skin ( which is wonderful right now) I asked what about petscans or whatever, the tech said The DR would have to let me know on that. WHATEVER, the DR just looks under my arm and says OK OK OK. He is somewhat strange but I think he is smart somewhat. Hell in America we only have foreigh doctors, right??????

Irishred, are you on tamoxifen or an AI? Since I'm on tamox my med onc says he'll be seeing me every 3 months. I don't know what the protocol is as far as frequency of checks otherwise, nor do I know what it is where you are. I do know that some oncs order all kinds of scans and some wait for symptoms. I guess this is just something you'll have to ask the med onc.
YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!FINISHING RADS SOON!!!!!!!!!!!

Irishred, I think we had the same doctor!! My skin held up very well too, even for the boosts. Keep moisturizing. I was put on Tamox for 5 years since I am premeno and I am ER+. I assume you will be put on Tamox or an Al too.
Congrats on finishig rads!! The end is nearing! Celebrate!

Congrats on almost finishing RADS!
Here is my care plan: My surgeon referred me to both a radiation oncologist and a medical oncologist. I saw both about one month post lumpectomy. The med onc said "come back when you finish RADS." The rad onc saw me all through radiation and then 2 months later for follow up. On that visit he ordered a mammogram to be done at 6 months post surgery, which was yesterday. He will see me again in three months. I will have mammograms every 6 months for 2 years he says. I now consider my med onc my primary cancer doctor. I saw her a week after RADS finished, she did blood work, tumor markers, and Rx'd Arimidex. I will see her every three months for 2 years, no pet scans etc unless problems arise.
I don't see my surgeon at all unless I think I need to. My plan is to wean myself off of my radiologist after the first of the year and just follow up with the med onc regularly. I don't think I need duplicate Dr visits and the med onc can order mammograms. I'll go back to the rad onc if the med onc thinks I need to but I don't foresee that.
Hugs,
Pam

Makraz - I am not taking any pills of any kind now and don't plan to. They also know I am not doing chemo. I am to go back in a month for a skin check and then a mammo a month after that, then we'll see what happens next. Good Luck to you.

would anyone address the subject of breast shrinkage after completing RADS? PLEASE- wish I would just finally know that answers to all my questions , they feel endless!
-
My breast did not shrink, if anything it was a little larger than the non radiated breast. They eventually evened out.

Hi Leah and others,
I am in Israel also but I have 4 more weeks until I finish the radiation treatment. I am at Rambam and I find them very courteous and caring which is good because I am finding this radiation treatment exhausting. I guess I should get my medical documents out and write in my diagnosis.
-
Hi magi,
I'm glad you're having a positive experience at Rambam. Daily trips to Haifa would NOT do for me so I did mine at Hadassah Ein Kerem. Uncaring is the word I'd use to describe the techs. I was treated as if I was a thing not a person. It was extremely distressing, and the exact opposite of the experience I had at Shaarei Tzedek, where I did my surgery and chemo. The staff there could not have been nicer. When my dh was there a few months after I finished my chemo (visiting, not a patient) he ran into one of the chemo nurses who recognized him, asked how I was doing, etc. Knowing people care and are not just doing a job to pay the bills makes a big difference.
I know what you mean about exhausting - even now, almost 2 months after rads, I don't remember what it is NOT to be tired.

I was the most tired a month or two after radiation. I don't know if everything just caught up with me or what, but I was exhausted! It does get better. Exercising helps, although it's probably the last thing you feel like doing.

My son, 9 years old, asked me why one of my breasts was smaller than the other. I have noticed this also with my bra getting too big on that side during rads. When I told my husband about my son saying this he said "ADD , my ass. That child is paying attention. " We had a good laugh.
-
Sorry to hear that the Hadassah staff are less than kind. The whole experience is so frustrating and humiliating as it is without having insensitive staff. I am in the north so for me it is a 45 minute trip. Only a week and a half to go. Next week I start the boosts. I feel like such a blob though. Even for short walks I have not the energy nor the desire. How does one motivate oneself?
-
Congrats on almost being done! Love the story about yoru son. Too funny!
I found towards the end of my rads, I was energized. I don't know if it was because I was excited about being done but I had a burst of energy. A couple months after rads, I was very tired. Strange, but that's how it worked for me.
