Canadian Health Care

Yes, I still can't believe someone had my post pulled about a website that specializes in finding homes for dogs who are going to be euthanized. We had an entire "research team" trying to figure out who reported the post. Only the moderators know for sure (Clairol hair dye??) I'm still disgusted by it.

Oh, just gotta add something about the White House:  During the War of 1812, the Americans pulled out of the Niagara region (they were deadly afraid of the Indians, led by Tecumseh) but before they left, they burned down the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.  Thus you will never find original structures here dating earlier than 1814.  So in retaliation, the Brits (remember, we didn't have Canada yet) surprised Dolly Madison who was hosting a big dinner party at the President's mansion by not yelling "Fire"!  When she started to smell the smoke, she soon realized what was happening.  The fire scorched so much of the brickwork that the only remedy was a whitewash.  And then....it became known as the White House.

Hey ladies, I think you know that you'll always find the the welcome mat here for you!...just as we welcomed Vietnam War conscientious objectors (I refuse to call them by that other name).  And even after amnesty, I'm pleased to say that most of them stayed.

Athena, why anyone over there ever accused us of hating America, I'll never understand.  We hate some of the stuff that has been taking place in the healthcare debate but I guess some people cannot (will not) distinguish between the two.  Anyhow, sticks and stones etc.....

At the risk of becoming political, here is part of today's article in the Toronto Star.

A Canadian-style plan could save Americans $400 billion a year, Harvard's Dr. David Himmelstein wrote recently in the New England Journal of Medicine.But Americans are so uninformed about the rest of the world that few even seem aware any Canadian can spend weeks in hospital getting state-of-the-art medical treatment and then walk out the front door without owing a penny. Such is the menace of public health care.Universal care is extremely popular once it's in place, but it can be hard to overcome resistance to putting it in place, as the current U.S. psychodrama shows. I think that pretty much sums up some of the animosity that the previous thread encountered.  Funny thing is, I would have thought that this journalist was 'out to lunch' if I hadn't been caught in the middle of the exact thing she is describing. 

Did you all notice how few people are posting in the other threads?  It seems that people are afraid to post there.  How sad.  As someone whose post was removed in the other thread, I find it shocking that some people are so afraid of hearing someone else's opinion.  Since I was told by one "reporter" that I should only post here, I wonder if she will dare to come  to this thread now to complain about anti-Americanism?  I wonder is she is going to start "reporting" over hear as well.  

I also disagree that the whole thread should have been taken down.  The moderators know who was doing all the reporting.  Those women should be banned from the boards.  The threads should not have been taken down.  Just my opini

I used the bitch word on another thread and about 60 posts later, the thread was shut down. Someone (can't tell you) said "do you think it was because THAT person used the B-word!" OMG grow up lady!

First of all, sorry for the typos.  I think I need to hit the sack soon.  It should be "here" not "hear" and "opinion" not "opini" 

Secondly, I welcome anyone who wants to be here.  I don't have to agree with what you write, and you don't have to agree with what  I write.  We can even debate our different positions.  That's fine with me.

So, I welcome anyone who wants to debate healthcare, having a bi***ing session, whatever.  I just don't want my posts deleted because someone disagrees with my position on an issue.

Barbe, please, pretty please PM me with the name of the "supposed" reporter. PLEASE....lol 

Hey Pip, we'll just beat them back with our hockey sticks, just like we've been trying to correct the lies spread about universal healthcare.

By the way I just saw a tv comercial by the American Medical Association in support of healthcare reform, in an effort to dispute some of the lies that have been spread around.  So it really doesn't do much good to try and fool us with info that can be so easily disputed, simply by watching tv......

Hoping The Daily Show is on tonight -- I need a dose of reality and a good laugh!!!   TTFN.

The pushy American thing makes me laugh.  I had only been in the US for a couple of weeks and hadn't received my health card yet.  I called the insurance company because I had a horrible ear infection and had to get it seen too.  The insurance person said it was in the mail and I had to wait.  I said OK and hung up the phone.  Then a sweet young pup (I know that's superfluous to the story, but he was a sweetie-pie) sitting across from me said: you're not in Canada anymore, don't be polite, get on the phone and get what you need so you can go to the doctor!  He coached me on what to say!  It worked, found out I could download a copy of my healthcare info online and got treated.  Teehee!  Lizzie, you're not in Canada anymore!!

American spelling isn't weird.  It's wrong.     Just ask the Brits, or Australians, or any one else (except Americans) who use English.  Seriously.  Or is that seriosly? 

And covertanjou, I just thought that "opini" was the plural for opinion.  I happen to share your opini about the healthcare thread.

When I live in the US, somehow the way I pronouce the word "about" instantly tells people I'm Canadian. I can be anywhere and use the word about and without fail someone will turn to me and say, "you're Canadian, huh?"

YMB, can you tell the difference? I swear when they say about, it sounds the exact same to me. But sure enough, everytime I say it, it's a dead giveaway that I am not a SOB (south of the border) gal. I'm a NOB.

We lived in the US for a few years in the 60s. My parents wanted to buy a chesterfield suite and each furniture store said they had no such thing. When they finally learned to ask for a sofa soot, they were in business! Later when we were camping, Mom, always one to chat, was talking to the next camper who said there were a lot of polecats in the area. Mom said there were a lot of skunks too. Some time into the conversation they realized they were talking about the same thing. I was confused when ordered to bring sneakers to gym class. It seemed more sensible to bring running shoes.

It might have been easier when we lived in Germany. At least we knew we were speaking different languages.
