Canadian Health Care

Yes, I still can't believe someone had my post pulled about a website that specializes in finding homes for dogs who are going to be euthanized. We had an entire "research team" trying to figure out who reported the post. Only the moderators know for sure (Clairol hair dye??) I'm still disgusted by it.

There's an interesting article by Linda McQuaig in today's Toronto Star on the issue of the American health care debate. I hesitate to post it or a link to it because it might be considered inflammatory by the button pushers.

Oh, just gotta add something about the White House: During the War of 1812, the Americans pulled out of the Niagara region (they were deadly afraid of the Indians, led by Tecumseh) but before they left, they burned down the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Thus you will never find original structures here dating earlier than 1814. So in retaliation, the Brits (remember, we didn't have Canada yet) surprised Dolly Madison who was hosting a big dinner party at the President's mansion by not yelling "Fire"! When she started to smell the smoke, she soon realized what was happening. The fire scorched so much of the brickwork that the only remedy was a whitewash. And then....it became known as the White House.

She: when I was in the hospital for a week at the end of July here in Barrie, my room wasn't cleaned once either. I was on the maternity floor (they needed a bed for me, any bed!) I remember telling my DH that I was glad there weren't people coming in and out with their pungent mops and sprays. I used to HATE the men who would mop veeeeery slowing and keep checking me out to see if they could see skin! I also think that was a way to transmit disease/virus/MRSA/whatever from room-to-room.
-
Hey ladies, I think you know that you'll always find the the welcome mat here for you!...just as we welcomed Vietnam War conscientious objectors (I refuse to call them by that other name). And even after amnesty, I'm pleased to say that most of them stayed
.
Lassie, that Toronto Star article would have been red flagged here for sure.
Athena, why anyone over there ever accused us of hating America, I'll never understand. We hate some of the stuff that has been taking place in the healthcare debate but I guess some people cannot (will not) distinguish between the two. Anyhow, sticks and stones etc.....

I'm Canadian and live in the US five months a year. Imagine my shock when last winter a vendor tossed me out of their store and then shouted at me for being a "typical" Canadian (whatever that means!!) and on and on . . . putting down Canadians. I was so upset. Obviously the man had a screw loose but regardless, it was the first time anyone ever hated me because I am Canadian.
-
At the risk of becoming political, here is part of today's article in the Toronto Star.
"It's this dynamic – citizens pitted against each other – that has kept Americans at each other's throats over health care for years. It's easy to understand, for instance, why middle class American taxpayers resent paying for medicaid, a public program that provides some coverage for the poor, when these same taxpayers can't afford coverage for themselves and their families. The only real solution is public health care for all. A Canadian-style plan could save Americans $400 billion a year, Harvard's Dr. David Himmelstein wrote recently in the New England Journal of Medicine. But Americans are so uninformed about the rest of the world that few even seem aware any Canadian can spend weeks in hospital getting state-of-the-art medical treatment and then walk out the front door without owing a penny. Such is the menace of public health care.Universal care is extremely popular once it's in place, but it can be hard to overcome resistance to putting it in place, as the current U.S. psychodrama shows. (Canada went through a less traumatic, but still difficult initiation.)All this should serve as a potent lesson to Canadians about the urgency of protecting our public health-care system. Once it starts to fall apart, the rich bolt from it, arrange for their own care and then object to paying taxes for a system they don't much use.The importance of avoiding this fate has never been more apparent than now, when the snarling fury of America's current crop of right-wing extremists almost makes one nostalgic for last year's gentler, childlike lunacy of Sarah Palin."
I think that pretty much sums up some of the animosity that the previous thread encountered. Funny thing is, I would have thought that this journalist was 'out to lunch' if I hadn't been caught in the middle of the exact thing she is describing.
-
Oooooh, I liked the "psychodrama" and "snarling fury"! ehehehehhee
I think the ones screaming the loudest in the US have the most invested in the big pharmas! Look at their financial portfolios, not their health to see what makes them tick.

Did you all notice how few people are posting in the other threads? It seems that people are afraid to post there. How sad. As someone whose post was removed in the other thread, I find it shocking that some people are so afraid of hearing someone else's opinion. Since I was told by one "reporter" that I should only post here, I wonder if she will dare to come to this thread now to complain about anti-Americanism? I wonder is she is going to start "reporting" over hear as well.
I also disagree that the whole thread should have been taken down. The moderators know who was doing all the reporting. Those women should be banned from the boards. The threads should not have been taken down. Just my opini
-
I bet you my life I know who one of the trouble makers is!
-
Why did gracie delete the opening post of this thread?
-
Someone probably PM'd her and gave her hell! (not me!)
To the Americans...you can type the full name of God and Hell and Bitch on this thread, cause we Canadians are big girls...
-
I used the bitch word on another thread and about 60 posts later, the thread was shut down. Someone (can't tell you) said "do you think it was because THAT person used the B-word!" OMG grow up lady!
-
It shouldn't even matter if someone doesn't like your post!!!!
If we are old enough to be on their computer this late, and typing in coherent English, then we are big enough to suck it up and realize we aren't always right! And neither are "you"!! (I don't mean the ladies above, y'all know who I mean
)
-
First of all, sorry for the typos. I think I need to hit the sack soon. It should be "here" not "hear" and "opinion" not "opini"
Secondly, I welcome anyone who wants to be here. I don't have to agree with what you write, and you don't have to agree with what I write. We can even debate our different positions. That's fine with me.
So, I welcome anyone who wants to debate healthcare, having a bi***ing session, whatever. I just don't want my posts deleted because someone disagrees with my position on an issue.
Barbe, please, pretty please PM me with the name of the "supposed" reporter. PLEASE....lol
-
Glad to see our American sisters joining us here. However, we probably don't have much time before the bullies show up again.
-
Hey Pip, we'll just beat them back with our hockey sticks
, just like we've been trying to correct the lies spread about universal healthcare.
By the way I just saw a tv comercial by the American Medical Association in support of healthcare reform, in an effort to dispute some of the lies that have been spread around. So it really doesn't do much good to try and fool us with info that can be so easily disputed, simply by watching tv......
Hoping The Daily Show is on tonight -- I need a dose of reality and a good laugh!!! TTFN

I know, PiP ("probably don't have much time before the bullies show up") !
I have to say I feel a bit beaten down -- well, maybe it's also because I'm still at work at 10:45 PM, and my computer just froze and lost the last hour's worth of work I did on some manuscripts! It's supposed to auto-backup, grrrr!!! -- well, since it was work that froze my work computer, I thought I might as well pop in to BCO...
ANYWAY, I was very engaged politically in refuting RW hysteria and lies all last year on this Board -- but the repeated scuttling of discussions really has worn me down... along with the permanent banning of Paprika, and wonderful people like Felicia leaving the Board... (I mean -- we lose women here ETERNALLY to cancer -- isn't that ENOUGH ???????? Why do we have to lose friendships to nastiness???)
Wow, guess I'm not very coherent or moderate tonight. Better get back to work soon. PiP, I probably won't "create" any words until tomorrow!
Guess I'm not usually so emotional on this Board -- but just wanted all the Canadians and agnostics, and Canadian agnostics
, to know how much I love you all !!!

The pushy American thing makes me laugh. I had only been in the US for a couple of weeks and hadn't received my health card yet. I called the insurance company because I had a horrible ear infection and had to get it seen too. The insurance person said it was in the mail and I had to wait. I said OK and hung up the phone. Then a sweet young pup (I know that's superfluous to the story, but he was a sweetie-pie) sitting across from me said: you're not in Canada anymore, don't be polite, get on the phone and get what you need so you can go to the doctor! He coached me on what to say! It worked, found out I could download a copy of my healthcare info online and got treated. Teehee! Lizzie, you're not in Canada anymore!!
-
Hey, we love you Americans . . . even though your spelling of so many words, is a tad weird.
But hey, when I live there, I mispell my words too!!
-
American spelling isn't weird. It's wrong.
Just ask the Brits, or Australians, or any one else (except Americans) who use English. Seriously. Or is that seriosly?
And covertanjou, I just thought that "opini" was the plural for opinion. I happen to share your opini about the healthcare thread.
-
But we use "z" instead of "s" in a lot of the words. At least we still say "zed" instead of "zeeeee".
-
When I live in the US, somehow the way I pronouce the word "about" instantly tells people I'm Canadian. I can be anywhere and use the word about and without fail someone will turn to me and say, "you're Canadian, huh?"
-
And they give you a blank stare when you ask to use the washroom. My friend from NJ said, "you mean the laundry room?"
-
oh yeah, you all say "aboot" and I for one love you for it!
-
OMGosh Mantra, some of my American cousins ask me to say about, just so they can have a laugh.
-
YMB, can you tell the difference? I swear when they say about, it sounds the exact same to me. But sure enough, everytime I say it, it's a dead giveaway that I am not a SOB (south of the border) gal. I'm a NOB.
-
Ya gotta say:
trash not garbage
napkin not serviette
soda not pop
sneakers not runners
I could bore you with more, but my sister has lived in the states for 30 years.I get it all.
Hey, when they say "You're Canadian, huh?" You should say "No, I'm Canadian, eh!"
I took a course in Chicago for two weeks once and also swear I didn't see the difference in how we say SOUTH, ABOUT either!
-
We lived in the US for a few years in the 60s. My parents wanted to buy a chesterfield suite and each furniture store said they had no such thing. When they finally learned to ask for a sofa soot, they were in business! Later when we were camping, Mom, always one to chat, was talking to the next camper who said there were a lot of polecats in the area. Mom said there were a lot of skunks too. Some time into the conversation they realized they were talking about the same thing. I was confused when ordered to bring sneakers to gym class. It seemed more sensible to bring running shoes.
It might have been easier when we lived in Germany. At least we knew we were speaking different languages.
-
It's even more bizzare in Boston. Apparently I live in Meffah, not Medford. Peabody is P-B-D. Woburn is Woobin. I have a cah, not a car. Garbage can is a barrel. I carry a pocket book, not a purse. One friend from Ohio said her area had a weird name for that strip of lawn between the side walk and the road -- they call it a devil strip! I never got the aboot thing...we say that? And you can buy Canadian bread in the grocery store -- I did mention that we didn't have a special bread in Canada. BTW it's square sandwich bread... American cheese is processed cheese.
The funniest thing happened when I first ordered Chinese takeout. They don't have chicken balls and were quite scandalized by the thought, beyond the anatomical inaccuracy. They have chicken fingers instead -- sort of long balls... Our chicken fingers are chicken tenders, which makes me think of balls again... ;-)
