Spring - I am impressed that you walk in the back yard - is it a really BIG backyard?  Good for you.  I hope the Mexican food does the trick for you and you get to feeling better.

Brenda - my neck pain comes and goes all day & night and seems to be triggered by certain movements.  The pain travels up the back of my head actually and is quite sharp.  I did tell the onc. about it but she gave me Flexeral and said it could of been from tight muscles.  I still have it though.  Maybe I need accupuncture too!

I walked at the mall Friday night with my youngest DS in search of a bathing suit for a pool party.  We live in Florida and it is still summer here but none of the stores had bathing suits!  They had all winter clothes - and our winters are like the summers up north.   I was so pissed but then we went to Walmart & found one marked down to $5.00. I love a bargain!  At least I got to walk the mall in the air conditioning and my son was acting 14 and had to walk ahead of me - heaven forbid anyone knew he was at the mall with his mom!!!  So I had to hustle to keep up.

I bought myself the new Ipod nano and I love it!!!   It has a pedometer, radio, clock and of course my tunes!  I walk further when I have music to listen to.  A good song comes on and my feets just keep going.  Weighed in at W.W. yesterday - down 2 more lbs.   Swam this morning and will walk tonight.

Rachel - I asked my son if the Wii had to be directly in front of the TV and he thought yes.    Sorry I don't know anyone in the service to help you with your Afganistan mission.  Hope you find someone soon though!  Great work!

Hey T&A, aka Spring!! LOL, my FIL had spine surgery a few months ago and was really plugged up, tried everthing, then my SIL said to drink Smooth Move Tea, and it did the trick, maybe worth a try??  Poor thing, healing is a beotch!

Rachel, glad you got a contact...my girlfriend hasn't checked her email this weekend obviously.

Well, Hi to all this evening, I am exhausted.  too much SOCIALIZING for this girl both days.  I'm beat and headed to bed.  Its still hot out, 85 degrees and its really dark out right now!  yikes!  Headed for triple digits tomorrow.  This front will be headed your way girls in the midwest and east coast!!

    Nightie night!

Good morning, everyone!  Well just when it's started to cool off here in the mornings, making walking easier, I was in the pool yesterday -- swimming and jumping around and getting tons of great stretching exercise -- I somehow managed to whack my toe on the bottom step of the pool.  I hit the concrete so hard, I literally saw stars, and it took the polish off my nail!  This morning, it's totally dark blue/red and very painful.  So, there goes my walking for a few days.  Guess I'll have to stick to the pool (away from that stupid step!) and maybe some upper body work, which I'd also started to do yesterday with some hand weights.

Kari ~ Sounds like you had a fun weekend!  And hopefully this incoming heatwave will be our last!

Spring ~ As everyone has said -- you had 11.5 hrs. of surgery!   Do what you feel like doing, but please don't overdo!  Have you heard the adage that it takes a month for every hour you're in surgery to get back to your pre-surgery energy level?  OK, for you it no doubt will be less; but the 1 hr. = 1 month analogy is something to help keep your expections realistic.

Hugs & energizing thoughts to all ~  Deanna

Deanna, sorry you had to join the 'klutz club' !!  That must HURT!  A guy in the office came in last week limping and wearing a slipper on one foot.  He had fallen at his cabin and his toe is black and blue and very swollen.  Our feet are so important!  The pool sounds like the better choice as opposed to walking now, you're right!!  Hope you heal quickly!

Wow, a month for every hour!  That really puts things into perspective.

So I did get on the eliptical yesterday morning, even though I was pooped.  And today, after the exercising each morning and the running around, driving and socializing, I am really feeling tired this morning.  This is going to be a LONG workday!  and a HOT one to boot!  Allie, even you guys have heat warnings today!  Be careful...

Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.

Kari ~  The funny thing was, after the stars stopped, I limped into the house and told my husband, who was watching a football game, what had happened.  His comment?  "Well, you'll just have to repolish it."  (What the heck?!   I guess he was so focused on the game that he only caught the part about the polish.  Typical, huh?!)

LOVE the quote!  I'm going to post it where I can see it every day because it's something I really need to remember.    Deanna

I love the quote too--have already forwarded it on to friends. You find good ones! :)

Deanna--ouch! sorry about your toe... :(

I am going to the gym...I am going to the gym....I am going to the gym....

Sigh. I know I will enjoy it while I am there so why is the getting there so tough? Have to go as did no workouts last week (except walking) and my back is killing me from lack of exercise. So I will go! :)

Funny about the heat predictions--we are socked in fog here and it's 57 degrees! I'm sure it will clear later but it's cold right now...

have to change my pic as my DH objected to being in it with a cigar! :)

    hello ladies,

i'm sorry to jump in here. i don't want to interupt the rythm but i need your help, please. had bilateral mx, lymph node removal and latt flap March 4, 2009. i just finished chemo (thank God) and will begin rads in mid october.

i absolutley need to lose weight (for me health) and many other reasons but i am so unbelievably tired. how am i supposed to do that? is it me? walk? in addition to everything else? what? i live in NJ and commute to NYC and THAT is really hard some days. i can't even think about coming home and getting on the tread mill. but, like i said, i just did my last chemo on Wednesday so i'll start feeling more energy soon, right? ( i know everyone is different.)

my next question is that i started with a little peach fuzz on my head. but it isn't do anything more... not yet anyway... am i being too impatient? also, the peach fuzz in coming in as blonde. i was a platinum blonde as a baby and changed to brown at age 11. i'm 40 in march. did anyone experience the orginal color regrowth or was it the same as before we lost it?

    help, please. :-)

Smooth Move Tea? Where do you ladies find this, is it in stores or do you need to order it from the internet?

Deanna, 11 months to recover,,,,,, AHHHHCK!!!!! I hope not! I am ready to move more as soon as the nerves between my boobs calm down for goodness sakes!!

Puttered around the garden today, moving slow, no josteling!

I can't believe I am T&A. Holy cow, after all these years. LOL.

    Spring.

CS34 - I grew up in Dunellen, NJ, most of my family lives in East Windsor, and my sister is an English teacher at Edison High School!!! Small world!  I know that commute, that is a rough one.

My advice - I did PT during chemo. Try to walk, even if you don't feel like it, a little every day. I would feel terrible, exhausted, etc., but did the exercise anyway, and would *always* feel better afterwards. I think if our bodies slow down too much, they get even more lethargic. Some mild exercise can build energy!!!

CS34 - I didn't have chemo but from what I have read & heard it can make you really tired.  I would check with the doctor first about exercise and also ask if you can go on a diet yet.   Maybe your body just isn't ready for it yet.  I am doing Weight Watchers and I like it.  Maybe start a diet and when you get your energy level up then you can start walking and/or swimming.  Sorry I can't help with your hair questions but I'm sure someone will know the answer.  Take care!

Gee Kate, I do not agree with much of anything that cancer symposium said. It is proven supplements help, though not as much as diet, and his idea that 1000 of D is enough is just not true. In fact those kind of blanket statements are ridiculous because again, it is a one size fits all mentality. One cannot know how much D to take until you have blood tests done to see how you metabolize it! It took me a year of 6000 IU supplements to get my D level up. And none of us should be drinking wine every day. We need to exercise more that 3 times a week. That is what I did before bc. Now I exercise daily, and have finally been able to lose weight because daily exercise raises metabolism. We do not have to be working out for hours, at least walking daily is important. I also do not like how they keep pushing the BRCA testing. First of all, it there has been controversy about its accuracy and second, what does having it done prove? We already got cancer, so we know we have some kind of genetic weakness, we just need to do all we can now for prevention. Having some stat does not help at all, just costs a lot. It may have merit for those who are young or never had bc to encourage them to be proactive, but what purpose does it have for the rest of us?

And if you are all suffering on the tamox, why not look into all the alternatives out there. Do you know what your iodine and hormone levels are. Do you have any thyroid issue or adrenal issues? We get cancer because our systems get out of whack and cancer cells then morph from free radicals. Isn't it better to know exactly what is out of balance and go from there? I just can never understand why we are all told to take drugs, when they do not even do the hormone tests first to determine just exactly what our hormone levels are.

I cannot tell you how much my breast tissue has improved since I have incorporated all these natural solutions and gotten things into balance.

springtime, GET OUT!! i live in Edison!!!! yes, a small world. that's so cool. thank you for replying. i appreciate it. i still can't imagine but i will try. even if it's for five minutes on the tread mill. i have to at least try, right? so, wait? you were gray before you lost it and when it came back it was blonde? how great is that??? good for you!!

kookiesmom: thank you for replying as well.

my taste buds are still way out of wack too so once they come back in full force, i'll be able to make a meal plan. at this point it's just whatever i can enjoy and that is really few & far between.

oh ya...the radiology oncologist said that since i was "out of shape" i would have more of a chance of getting lymphedema during rads to the lymh nodes. (thanks Doc!!) i just can't wait to feel good enough to do it but maybe---from what you are all saying---is that i NEED to start to feel good.... i dread it but i will try.

thank you!!! seems like i will be lurking on this thread until i can get movin' and shakin'...

cs34 ~  Some of what I said to Spring applies to you, too.  You had a mast + reconstructive surgery (which I'm sure was a long one) in March, barely got healed from that, and they hit you with chemo.  No wonder you're still tired!   I had TC -- is that what you had? -- and I know it leaves you totally exhausted, especially your muscles.  I finished mine in October, and by December, I was still having difficulty with leg pain and couldn't climb a flight of stairs without effort.  So don't underestimate what you've been through!  Also my blood counts (both WBC & RBC) were very low even several months after chemo ended, and yours probably are, too.  And you still have rads to go -- which, while not as physically difficult as chemo, do take a huge emotional toll on us, I think.  Go easy on yourself -- maybe even pamper yourself more than usual right now -- and rest up for rads.

As far as what you can do, walking is great, but can you possibly walk outdoors, instead of on a boring treadmill?  You don't have to do a lot at one time.  You can build up as you gain more strength.  And WW is probably an excellent program, but be sure that you're maximizing your calories with the most healthful food choices.  I've never done WW, but their packaged cookies and frozen desserts, for example, can't be nearly as health-building as fresh fruit would be, even though they might both be 100 calories.

Spring is right about chemo hair.  It tends to come in white or colorless at first, then mine got very dark (my original color), then the gray showed up.  As fascinating as it is, I think we just have to be thankful that it's coming back.  There's a thread somewhere here with a handful of women who have had permanent hair loss, which I'm glad I didn't know about pre-chemo!

Anyway, glad you're joining us, and hope we can help you and I know you will motivate us as you finish up your tx and then rebound from it!   Deanna

Deanna, OMG, that's funny about your DH saying to just repolish!!  His mind was into the game!!  LOL!  just not your game :(  I forwarded that quote to a lot of girlies today and they all love it!  Its a keeper!

Springie, Smoothe Move Tea can be purchased at Whole Foods, but I know I've seen it elsewhere too!  Little white box, good good luck!!!!!  Our T&A girlie!!!  LOL!!

CS, take it slow, you just finished chemo and still have rads that will fatigue as well.  I had so muscle left after chemo and my legs just felt wobbly and I was sooooo tired.  I remember starting with a 2 minute walk and that was my goal.  Then I would add 1 minute....after rads is when I really started noticing a difference as my RBC counts finally improved.  Talk to a nutritionist and don't just start dieting, you want to make sure all your blood work is good and you are eating a balanced diet.  My hair came back really black!!  Before chemo it was dark and the gray was really coming in, and at first when my hair came back and it grew a little I saw some gray so I colored it, but now I only see 2 strands of gray and the back is really curly but not the top..the sides flare out though!  I am just so happy its hair, that I just look in the mirror and laugh.  Hope yours comes in soon!

Vivre, I also do not agree with some of what the Med Onc said, but they are going by scientific research and as my onc reminded me, they are studying the Vit  D thing now and cannot vary from the current recommendations until those studies are concluded.  Makes sense to me.  But my onc also told me to take the extra D so I am getting over the recommendation and will get my level tested again in November.  My onc also told me that a couple of small glasses of wine per week was perfectly fine when we had the 'alcohol' talk.  Now mind you, I don't even do that, maybe a small glass once a week or not, I don't agree with 1 drink per day! but then I never have, too much alcoholism has surrounded me and I have issues with it.  My hormone levels and thyroid have been checked, I trust my onc and my pcp and will personally not look into any alternatives to Tamoxifen.  I believe in Natural Things up to a certain point, but hey, thats everyone's right and its a personal decision to pursue that route.  As far as BRCA testing I think they were saying that it really helps the younger ones out there...they covered a lot of ground that night and I couldn't write that fast or keep up part of the time.  I am going to look into it though.

Ainm--Whew! Thank goodness you are back to exercising! I have just about knocked myself out doing those extras for you! And good luck with the support group; remember, you are not a flake, you are an interesting, smart woman who is still trying to figure out how to do AfterCancer Life! We are right there with you!

Kookiesmom--I start the day with stretching, including a focus on my neck muscles, then I try to remember to stretch my neck throughout the day. Some days I have better outcomes than other days.

Deanna--Sorry about the walking hiatus. We've had so much rain here that I have not been able to walk since last weekend, and I miss it. BUT I am still working out everyday.

Hey, guys--do you have any suggestions for exercise DVDs? I am looking for something that is low impact (my knees are plagued with osteoarthritis) and that will help me on the days when I need guidance. I already do Tai Ch'i--just short form--and I follow the Esmonde technique for stretching many mornings (on PBS). I also have a routine that focuses on back strength. I'm interested in ideas....

cs34--You've gotten great advice and support for "taking it slow." I had T/C chemo that ended in May, then surgery, and I had to start back very slowly. I started with fifteen minutes a day and some of that was just "concentrated moving"!  Be kind to yourself, set realistic expectations, and you will be surprised at how your progress over time will build your momentum and motivation. Plus, coming here for ideas, to "confess" problems and lapses, and for being proud of progress is a great motivator! Be good to yourself!

Kari, thanks, gotta get to Whole Foods for the "smooth move" tea.... what a name! LOL.

CS, yes, I am a Jersey girl - well, I have lived in Raleigh and raised we raised our 2 girls (GRITS - Girls Raised In The South - LOL). But you know, you can take the girl out of Jersey, but you can't take the Jersey out of the girl!! This becomes most apparent when something happens that causes a string of expletives to burst out of me!! LOL.

But CS, try it, do a little something every day. I need to take my own advice. !!!! I am typically an exercise machine, and this surgery has really thrown me for a loop. So we will be kind to ourselves but still do something!! OKAY??? Report back!!! :)

You know, about my hair. I am now wondering if it was really gray all those years, or if it was really gray all over. I mean, she would put color in, and then "roots" would show, but ... well, I am just putting in "hennas" now - all natural, gives it a little reddish punch, but washes out slowly. I am not going back to putting those hair chemicals on my head again. Nope, I've already told my hair lady.

CS24: when I finished chemo (I had my rads during chemo), I could hardly walk a flight of stairs.  I bought a pedometer and measured how many steps I took. At first it was a real effort to walk around the block--believe it or not, I was out of breath.  But I tried to keep going and I would see that I was going a little further.  I now do about 3 miles a day but can do 5 miles a day easily if I am motivated by being in Paris and wanting to see alot. :-)

Don't get discouraged. Also the rads may make you tired so try to do what you can, but don't be upset if you are still tired. You can measure your steps and if you take 100 steps in a day, well that is 100 steps.  Maybe the next day you will be able to do 101 steps.

Spring, love the GRITS, girls raised in the south, my DDs had a southern belle accent from living there, it was soooo cute, but nope now its all California Valley Girl! haha just kidding...the accent is gone now.

Let's keep moving ladies, one step at a time!  Hugs to all you cuties!

Allie- I missed the cigar pic...cs34- how weird would it be if I said that everything you just reported sounded perfectly normal for a chemo patient?  I know, you want the weight gone NOW and you want the hair back NOW and you sure as hell deserve both.  Check out the Hair Hair Hair thread, my colorist has been working with some of the chemo gals regrowing, color issues, all that, and he's real close to Astor Place.  Your energy will start coming back and the cool fall will be encouraging to get out outside and walk- although it gets dark really early... oh yeah, everything Spring and dlb said, and you got the picture.  I just re-read your first post and found it interesting you said something about not breaking the rhythm - clearly you FEEL the rhythm, and that's the best sign imho.  You can dance, girl.Kari- I can NOT believe you quoted Carlos Casteneda! HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA Where did you get that? You know he is talking about peyote, right?   omg I was SO into him, I read every book until... well... anyway, A Separate Reality rocked major and I do believe in the lines of the world... All- well yesterday was my first Mammo after DX and I was terrified for days and eating Xanax to sleep at night- but usually exercising really well during the day.  Yesterday was Xanax breakfast, to get through the exam, everything AOK :)  Then I met up with a bunch of BC org gals from the hair thread, still stoned on the Xanax of course.  I didn't do much in the way of exercise, probably a good thing in my condition.  Stayed up waaaaaay too late instant messagingg with a friend, and when the nanny came in today i went back to sleep.  Weeeeirrrd dreams.  I dreamt I dropped my son and his head fell off.  Stuff like that.  In that dream, I actually said to myself, this is a dream, put his head back on and it stuck.   Took forever to  get any kind of motivation, finally out the door by like 3pm to buy necessary groceries for the kid.  Didn't walk to the store.  But after the store, I did walk the mile home.  Then after dinner I put the kid (30 pounds) in the new carrier (5 pounds) strapped him on my back and got on the elliptical trainer for an hour.  Kid gave up after 20 minutes, but he sleeps really well after that, and he LOVES being on my back, and I LOVE having him there.  So this kid is going to help motivate me in all ways, we're both happier when I work out.  When I put him down I picked up 5 lb weights to continue on the elliptical for my upper body.But... I got some ice cream for him to help wit his teething, and while I was at the really nice ice cream shop... I could not... pass up... the butter pecan ice cream.... :)

Hi all! A few things--CS34--good grief--look what your body has been through! Go slowly adding exercise and add as you feel comfortable doing. Any diet should be to nourish and strengthen your body--fresh fruits, veggies, healthy proteins-- not a "diet".On the seminar's recommendations--they did up the recommended vit D to 1000 from 400 IUs and are studying it more. They wouldn't want to recommend a high amt as it varies per person and needs more study. Also the studies they did on alcohol say there is substantial risk at one glass a day or more. Yes, less is better.BRCA testing is important to detect higher risks for ovarian cancer which is very hard to detect until it's late in the game--so women with positive tests are usually encouraged to remove the ovaries. Also it may be important for women with daughters or other family members--so they can be more diligent perhaps at an earlier age in watching for cancer. Have a good night! My DH is away so I am going to look for some good "girlie" TV... :)

Rachel - OMG, I had NO idea!  LOL!  I had to look it all up and oh my!!  haha is right!!!!  ;)  I can't believe you can go that long on the eliptical especially with all that weight on your back!!  You Rock!  I tucker out pretty easy, but was proud of my 35 minutes doing an interval program!!

Allie, I am going to do the BRCA test, my onc is referring me.  But then, I called cause I was told its a self referral thing and they told me that they have a triage appt. set up and someone will call me to see if I qualify.  Due to family history (my dad's sister has BC), they think its not likely I carry the gene.  I don't get understand, but I want the test.

She's also ordering the test to see if I metabolize the Tamoxifen, but she says this is a controversial thing and we will discuss that and my results at my appt. in Nov.  she is also going to monitor my Vit. D.

Just did my 2nd walk of the day!  I want to sleep better tonight so I thought I'd walk again.  Dancing with the Stars is on!  Maybe I should boogy along with it!  haha

Allie, hope you found some good stuff to watch!  enjoy

Kari, I think good to get those tests, BRCA (you have daughters, like me!) and the Tamoxifen metabolizing thing. (I'm an extreme metabolizer, so ONC thought good to start with Tam). My Onc said to me, "some people think this metabolizing factor is extremely important". Who knows, but whatever!

Just dropping by before yoga and then off to work.

Take everything slow and don't push yourself. Little baby steps and then it will all fall in place.

My hair has always been long, straight, and thick with grey. So after a long wait after chemo my hair came back in dark, curly and still with grey in it, and thick. Loved getting my hair cut the other day. I too clolored mine but no more. It started slow and then took off coming back in.

Love the quotes! Walked this morning and did some exercises and now need to walk the dog again and then off to yoga. Working nights again or should I say still!  Everyone take care. Joy

I just got back from doggie duty at the park and heading to the gym. Making myself go but looking forward to the hot shower when I get home--it's cold and foggy here!! I know it is hot everywhere else---which is actually why it IS cold and foggy here. I was going to say 'should clear by midday' but realized it is midday and no clearing. Oh well...
