    Hello Ladies,

I just finished rads almost two weeks ago so, now I need to get rid of this extra 20 pounds I got during chemo.  My co-workers bought me a wii when I was diagnosed and I got a wii fit but, I've only used it a couple of times.  I just can't get motivated.  I was hoping looking at that strange figure in the mirror would make me get to it but nope.  Part of my problem is, I have never really had an exercise regimen.  I WAS one of the lucky ones that just stayed thin by sheer luck and good metabolism.  What do I do? How do I start? Oh yeah, I travel with my job at least two-three nights a week so that doesn't help either. All those great restaraunts calling my name with an expense account that entices me to order dessert.

Hi all, just reporting in from yesterday. I was able to do 4 "laps" around the backyard. Slow, but I moved! I had to wear my garden "clogs" so they were goofy feeling, but it kept me at a slow pace. (Too many dog doodies back there to wear good sneakers! LOL!!)

Keep moving, even a little every day!

I have to start doing that "arms up the wall" thing.... range of motion and all...

    Spring.

guinol3d--are you trying glucosamine? It takes a while to work but that should help.

nasharayne--you might try meeting with a trainer to develop an exercise routine for you where you don't need to be in the gym to do it--preferably one that works with oncology patients as you have special needs being right out of rads. You don't want to over-strain your arm but need to build range of motion back in. Also most hotels now have some sort of gym so you should be able to at least get on a bike or treadmill for 20 mins when you travel. Motivation though to follow-thru is the hardest part though-although I think you'll find once you start doing it, the hardest part of any workout is just getting yourself to start it. You might try thinking about how much you are decreasing your risk for cancer recurrence by exercising--there are SO many studies that point to this. Also you will look and feel better, sleep better and cut your risk for all kinds of other healthy issues by getting in shape. Set specific goals for yourself--either by number of workouts during the week to # of lbs lost...or as my mother says, to just 'get fierce' with yourself! :)

Spring--LOL on the poopy clogs!! :)

    Poopy clogs - LOL LOL!!!!!!!!

guino13d - This is an excerpt from BCO under Day to Day matters - Bone and Joint Pain:  "Tamoxifen treatment may produce arthritis-like aches and stiffness. NSAIDs help with this pain. If you don't get adequate relief, your doctor might prescribe opioids."  Have you tried ibuprofen?  That's what my pcp prescribed for my hip pain.  I took it for a while but stopped as it didn't really help me.  Hope you find some relief so you can keep moving!!

nasharayne - Allie had some excellent advice.  You never had an exercise regime before, but heck you never had cancer before either.  Today is a new day girl!  Time to start new regimes.  You can do it!  We have to do what it takes to reduce recurrence.  Hopefully you will find your motivation.  Eating out can be tough, but with good choices, you can turn that around as well.  Best of luck to you sister and report back and let us know how you're doing!!

I will walk at lunch today.  Am going to the "Many Faces of Breast Cancer' event tonight with another bc sister.  I will report tomorrow what the oncologist panel says!!  Company tonight. 2 SIL's and 1 BIL and 1 boy toy!  But I won't be home til 8:30! YIKES  ...DH said he will be sad and miss me! how sweet...he's a keeper!

Make it a great day.  Let's get MOTIVATED ladies!!!!!!!!  Let's beat the chance for recurrence together!!!!!!!!!

Helena - you are too funny w/the ducky!!!!

I haven't posted in a while - been busy at work for a change.  Today is kind of dragging so here I am!  When I went to PS 2 weeks ago  and he told me I could start swimming in 2 weeks - oh and also was I going on a diet soon?!!!!  Granted I have gained about 18 lbs. since the sh*t hit the fan in March but he needs to lose some weight too dammit!  Anyway I went swimming last night and boy did my pecs feel weird!  It was nice a nice warm nite and I had the pool to myself so no one was there to see me floundering around attempting to learn how to swim again!  I am a little sore today so maybe I will just swim every other night and either walk or dust off my Wii and try that again.  Last time I used wii & did the yoga I through my knee out!  I am such an athelete - not!  I also started weight watchers a week ago & lost 2 lbs so far.  So my motivation is my PS's pudgy little face telling me to lose weight!

kookiesmom- I thought you were going to say since no one was around you went skinny dipping!  wow, wish I had access to a pool and the weather for it too!

nash- 2 weeks out of RADS is when the fatigue hit me the worst.  Don't be too hard on yourself.  With a great metabolism like that, maybe all you need is to increase your exercise and reduce a little on what you eat, plus a lot of water to flush EVERYTHING out.  Every exercise step you take not only brings you closer to returning to your figure but also kicks cancer in the butt.  And SLEEP is a nice thing too.  If you sleep through meals, all the better! :D So rest up, until you are ready, and start small, but steadily increase.

Kari-Thanks for the pep talk! I have been checking in here regularly now and I am very happy to report that I have exercised 13 of the last 13 days. I am hoping that I am getting addicted to it and that I won't stop--okay, well maybe not addicted, I want to still be able to stand myself if I skip a day here and there. I have noticed an upswing in my mood. I don't think I was clinically depressed, just sometimes anxious and tense about trying to rebuild, work, try to play more, etc. I also have joint issues, shall we say graciously, and I use a glucosamine/gelatin powder in my morning smoothies. I also have found that stretching really helps my joint pain, especially the increased neck stiffness from Tamox. Nasharayne--Perhaps your insurance will pay to have an exercise routine developed for you? It took me a while to find exercise/activities that are the best fit for me, and you might be more motivated if you have a routine developed for you. If not insurance reimbursed, it probably would still be a good investment. Rachel, Thanks for the comment on the wii fit bitch. I had been thinking of trying out the wii, but I already have enough aggravation in my life without paying for more!

Brenda- I don't want to discourage you, everyone else seems to love the Wii Fit bitch, and I haven't given up on her completely yet... that is, yet.  I was hoping someone would tell me there's another way to work with it or I did something wrong at set up... its seems like such a rudimentary program, like Pong or something.  I thought there would be all these great graphics like video games, but nooooooooo just this really obnoxious little doll face with an irritating voice telling me how fat I am and refusing to go to the next screen until I put my face into the plant next to me...

Tonight I walked my dog "Kookie" but she is getting old and slow so I used her for the warm up lap around the block.  Then I dropped her off at home, grabbed my ipod and walked my butt off.  I did not feel like going at all but once I get going it feels so good.  We are still very Hot & steamy down here in FL so now I have to go shower!  Never did get the wii fit bitch out (LOL Rachel) cause I had a living room full of teenage boys and no way was I was gonna attempt  wii-ing  in front of them! Besides my sons would have been mortified!  Tomorrow night swim again I guess!  No skinny dipping allowed in the community pool!  I don't think I have ever skinny dipped now that I think of it!  Jeez  I guess I will add that to my list of things to do!

Brenda -you said you have a stiff neck from tamox?  Cause I have that problem too but didn't chalk it up to Tamox. Guess I will have to ask Dr. but nothing you can do about it is there?

Keep checking in with your progress on exercise & I will do the same.  I love the feeling when I finally get warmed up and I guess the endorphins kick in!  So healthy!!!  If I don't walk I really miss it - I have been a walker all my life but barely was making it around the block while I was doing the tissue expander thing for 5 months.  But now I can breathe again with the foobs in!

I had my first mammo after the BC today. I am teary eyed with relief and happy to say that the doctor said it was "normal."

I had a set back in my walking this week....a really bad case of asthma...but I am better now so tomorrow morning I will get the pedometer on and start walking again.  You ladies are an inspiration to me!!!! Thanks.

Rachel--LOL on the wii fit b*****. I almost want to get it so I can 'experience' her....! :)  Too funny.

OK... I found a video on YouTube that gives you some idea of what the Wii Fit bitch is like, but i am surprised there isn't more...  this is a guy doing it, in which case he picked a guy icon, natch I had picked a girl icon, thus the "bitch".

But he gets SO MUCH FURTHER than I did.  I never even got to the exercise.  It take for farschnegening ever to get past all the tests, you see just a little of that in the beginning, and you see something is flashing on the screen while he is working out, probably "YOU ARE SCREWING UP YOU FAT MAN", like I need flashing messages while I am playing I'm A Little Teapot standing on a board.

He makes it look so much better than what i had...

actually, now that I see how it's supposed to work... maybe you Wii Fit people can tell me... do I HAVE to be standing directly in front of the screen perpendicular?  Problem is, I have a piano in a small apartment- don't ask, it's nuts.  The space i have where I could move freely is off to the left of the TV screen.  If I could stand over there, that would be much better.

And is the remote supposed to feel like it's got ball bearings in it?

Reporting in: Didn't do much yesterday as it was raining. We did go out for lunch and then to Wal-Mart where I got *another* bra. I don't know if that counts as exercise ! LOL. Today may be a repeat performance. We'll see.  I have hit the hardest part of my surgical recovery: trying to cut back on pain killers (bc of constipation!!!) but not really ready to. I hate this week,. Grrrrrrrr. grrrrrrrrr. grrrrrrrrrr. I think in a week I will be over this "hump".

I still have to do some "arms up the wall"!!! Writing it here so maybe I will actually do it. very sore!

    Good luck to you all!!!

    Finally checking in!!

Brenda & kookiesmom, I have the STIFF NECK TOO!!!  thought it was other stuff, but it was right when I started Tamox back in Feb, and ever sine!  Massage, acupuncture, chiropractor, ibuprofen, Glucosamine cream-NOTHING helps me!!!  Stupid Tamox!  haha

Mandy, great news on the clear mamm! YAY!

Spring, hang in there sweetie!  I think of you each day and pray for a quick recovery and no pain meds and no constipation soon for you!!  Yes, buying a bra does count as exercise! LOL!!

Rachel, you crack me up with your description of this Wii fit bitch thing.  I don't have one but am sooooo curious now.  Have to find a friend with one! heehee  You are Screwing Up Fat Man - LOL!!!!

Walked the trail at lunch yesterday, it was really hot, and hip hurt so after about 20-25 min. I was DONE!  Acupuncture clinic had a cancellation and guess what??  So she had me face down this time and did the needles on both sides and left me there what seemed like FOREVER!  So when we were done, i felt HIGH or STONED or DRUNK, I felt so messed up!!  It was weird.  Like my head was all weird, felt weird to drive like I was out of it.  But NO HIP PAIN AT ALL!!!  Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Went to the Many Faces of Breast Cancer event last night and here is some highlights:  (Many of us know some of this already, but here goes). The latest from the San Antonio symposium 12/08

    Med Onc:

Exercise is more important than Supplements!  Studies show no benefit, except for Vitamin D (complex discussions over this now).  Vit. D deficiencies are more common than they first suspected.  Vitamin E, which was the big craze has no benefit and beta carotene studies show you are worse off with it.  If your Vitamin D level is low - there is more disease, too much and its toxic.  800-1,000 mg daily is the recommendation.  Also Vit D & Calcium is optimum!!  Everything else should be obtained through our diet!

    • Alcohol - 1 drink per day for women, 2 for men.
    • Weight - Keep normal level - there are metabolic benefits with this - insulin levels....there is a risk for recurrence with negative tumors.
    • Exercise - 3 hours per week or a breakdown of 30 min per day.  But she said she'd like to see 45-60 min. of moderate exercise each day!  (WOW that's a lot), BUT this is the recommendation for reducing breast cancer in your lifetime, there are no studies for recurrence (I thought there was?)
    • Diet & Nutrition - Rich plant based, low processed foods and red meat.  Complex carbs are good not simple carbs.
    • She talked about Oncotype testing - a tumor market test for node negative women (counts me out), some can avoid chemo with this testing.

Tamoxifen - se's - Hot flashes, vein thrombosis, blood clots, uterine cancer, mimics estrogen at certain stages and protective for bones in post menopausal women.  Effexor can help with hot flashes 40% of the time, also can try lexapro.

AI's - OK to have tofu, if you are eating something in its natural state as part of a well balanced diet, its when we take something into supplement form or alter it from its natural state that it can hurt us. (soy for er/pr +)

    Genetics Counselor:
BRCA testing, 5-10% carry the gene.  You get a blood test and 2 wks turnaround time for results.  If you have a family history of breast or ovarian, get tested.  (I'm going to pursue testing for my DD's sake)

    Surgical Onc:
MRI can help with your plan, but anything they find needs to be proven with biopsy.  MRI's pick up all kinds of stuff and seeing what's there is hard.  Different people can read them differently.
Lumpectomies - they try to stay as close as the original boob.  breast preservation may not be for everyone. With genetic testing in younger women, the surgeons balance risk (mast & Recon)

    Rad Onc:
Helps br. surgeon & reduce recurrence (lumpectomies).  There is something called Intensity Moduality during rads, reduces toxicity 30%.  Reconstruction after mx is a challenge for cosmetic results.  PS don't like rad oncs!  She said we can get there, we have options for recon, locally or regionally (like SPRING) for complex microsurgery (flap or diep).

Bone scans can show hot spots from rads within 6 mos or a fracture could be healing.

I talked to the Rad Onc afterwards about recon and the rads hitting my heart/lung.  She said that rads usually will hit 10% of your lung, but usually our lung capacity is good and that shouldn't present a problem.  As far as my heart being zapped, she said the good news is that PCP's are trained in the 'heart' and I should go to mine and tell her I was given rads to my left side and ask to be screened for early heart disease and follow this for years to come.

Just checking in - but don't come too close. I have the mother and father (and entire family tree) of a cold. Haven't even switched on Wii Fit for two days - have only made it down the stairs once in 24 hours. Don't feel hungry but am eating whatever is brought to me as it can be haphazzard as there is no one here most of the day. DH rang GP and he started me on antibiotics. I have every symptom of a cold - hight temp, sore throat, cough, headache and my aches and pains have aches and pains.

Have a good weekend - I'm going to burrow into my quilt now before my head falls off!!

I really, really really should get on the elliptical trainer, but its no fun without my kid on my back... and we usually get a good walk in in this mild weather but I screwed up today, a lot going on... anyway...

Ladies all- I am hunting for a contact for the troops in Afghanistan.  You know I do this thing with the FDNY firefighters sending goodies to the troops in the "sandbox" and I got my contact in Iraq but I need one or two in Afghanistan to coordinate with me by email, receive and  distribute the goodies to the troops who need some support and love around Xmas.

I have hit up the usual suspects and so far got no one in Afghanistan.  I remember a bunch of you having family serving, so I am unabashedly badgering you.  More info on this effort to come... you'll like it, I promise. :)  PM or post, you know I am reading, and ASAP please, and I will post when I have my quota.

Thanks so much to those who wished me well on my "normal" mammo.  I was so scared that after I got the good news, the doctor asked, "Are you all right?"

I send all of you gals, my best. Today is my New Years, and to all here, whether or not you celebrate this day, L'Shana Tovah---for a good year!!!!

Morning everyone or excuse me it is now afternoon. Got my hair cut for the first time in a year. Felt like a little kid. They even gave me some of my curls in an envelope. I had straight hair all of my life till chemo. I also had long hair now keeping it short for a while. I have been to a support group meeting and a kick off for relay this week. I figured out that I am not as tough as I thought. Very emotional this week for some reason. Might have something to do with the soon to be ex calling me. Didn't go well!

Spring take it easy and don't push too hard.

Ainm - hope you are feeling better

Mandy - good going. I know when I had my mammo last month it felt like a load had be lifted off me.

Everyone else have a great weekend. Me - I'm working as usual.

Rachel, I emailed my friend at Ft. Bragg.  Her hubby is in the Special Forces and he's been to Afghanistan several times.  Will let you know if he still has a contact there when she replies!!  Good luck girl, you are SO friggin AWESOME for doing what you do!!  I just adore you!! :)  But do get out and enjoy the mild weather while it lasts!!

Ainm, sure hope you are feeling better today!!

Joy, wow your first hair cut!!  Mine is growing like crazy now!  That new photo is just ADORABLE!!!  Glad you went to a support group and yes, we seem to find we are not as tough as we thought when sharing.  A coworker of mine yesterday wanted to know my story, so I told him, he was blown away!!!!!!!!  Brought back lots of feelings for sure.  Hope your soon to be ex isn't making life too difficult for you.  We are here if you need us or to vent.  Don't hold it inside.  My divorce was simply awful, so hard to go from loving someone to watching them destroy themselves and their family.  So sad....I have a lot of hurt leftover and I dream about it a lot, which tells me I haven't fully dealt with it all.

DH and I walked the 40 minute loop this a.m.  Guess what?  STILL NO PAIN!!!  I am soooooooooooo happy, what a difference....hope it lasts!!

Have a TERRIFIC weekend all!  We are headed to a big family bash now - a wine release party, appetizers and then a family dinner after the other party officially ends.  WHAT FUN!!!

    Hi ladies,

Not been too active these past days, having a lot of pain and discomfort under my boobs, and between. Hyper sensitive to the touch - I think it is a nerve thing happening.

Anyway, did do 1.5 laps in the back yard. Seems like a regression! I think I need another week or two to "turn the corner". I have been constipated, so cutting back a lot on the narcotics, but then very uncomfortable!!!    Ate mexican food (lots of beans and veggies) for lunch as a "medicinal" act to battle constipation!

OKAY, TMI, and certainly not motivating!

One thought. Now that it hurts to move, I realized that we take our perfect moving bodies for granted way too much! We should be so thankful to walk in comfort, and I think we forget this!

Spring, I know nothing about the aftercare from your surgery, but you've really been exercising a lot since, and the painkillers do mask a lot of the pain... usually pain is your body saying "HEY YOU, CUT THAT OUT!" 12 hours of surgery... my surgery was maybe 45 minutes and it took me weeks... pain under boobs I  got with RADs, because it was skin on skin and it was cooking... what does doc say about all this?  Nerves sound kind of like a good thing, it shows they are working :) ?  Over sensitive, maybe you can use EMLA cream? But only if doc approves.  The constipation with the pain killers is of course normal and reaaaaaallly annoying. My docs had said to use Colace to get things moving... remember fluids too, Jewish Chicken Soup couldn't hurt and beans and veggies may not be the best broom... they make gas... can ya pump up the apples and bananas and of course prune juice?  DON'T EAT CHEESE.  CHEESE IS THE CORK. :)

    For my part...

today I had no nanny, meanwhile I took care of son, assembled and adjusted new kid carrier, tried on him new fall and winter shoes and boots and sweaters, packed up his summer clothes, packed up the new stuff we are sending back, put in drawers and closet his new stuff, packed the carrier with lunch for kid, put him on my back in the new carrier (30lbs plus) and walked 1.5 miles to get myself a salad and take him to the playground, played with him running around playground and lifting him on sliding board until he was out of breath, gave him lunch, back in the carrier for another 1.5 miles home- he passed out (oh and everyone complimented his new baby Ugg boots), put him down for nap, took bath and washed and dried hair, did 3 loads of laundry in between, when I lied down for nap, kid woke up so he got to watch an hour of tv in his crib while i napped, then I looked up how to cook yams and eggplant, baked them and brussell sprouts, while serving him dinner and cleaning out fridge, now the yams and eggplant are cooling and my back and arms and legs are pleasantly aching, I'm trying to stay awake long enough to put the eggplant and the yams in the fridge before I pass out

It was a very good day... and all because a) I ate a whole bag of brownie cookies last night without even working out and b) it was a gorgeous day and no crowds!

Kari & Kookiesmom--My neck pain has been somewhat alleviated by morning stretches. I also seem to benefit from changing my pillow sizes from night to night.  Kari--I'm glad to hear that you were able to walk with no pain. I tried acupuncture a few years ago and had terrific results. At times I would ask for the session that focused entirely on relaxation--I think it involved needles in the ears and forehead as well as inside ankles--and I was always so impressed with how wonderful I felt afterward.  Mandy--Great news about being "normal"! I recently was told that my Brain MRI was "unremarakable" and I was absolutely thrilled. Spring--You are slowly improving to be sure. I am sorry about the pain/constipation cycle--been there, done that. Have you tried miralax by chance? I thought I was going to lose my mind over constipation with T/C chemo, and I found Miralax to be very effective. When I used prune juice, I had the worst gas of my life--I could not believe the pain. I hope you will get your body "back in balance"! Joy--Hey, even the toughest of us realize that we are human after all, and we humans simply have a wide range of feelings about all kinds of things. I think it's inspiring that you went to a group; I hope you will continue to let your needs/concerns be known, here and there!  Ainm--So sorry to hear that you are sick. I promise that I will add some extra exercises in my workout just for you until you let us know that you are better (please...let us know when you are better!). All--Okay, I made it 15 out of 15 days for a workout. I promise I will let you know when I hit a wall, or goof off, or whatever. Be good to yourselves. And yes, Rachel, I really do believe that includes eating a whole bunch of cookies and skipping the work out from time to time! I hope you have pleasant dreams (possibly including a certain veterinarian?) after your great walk today.

Rachel, "Cheese is the cork" LOL LOL LOL. What a friggin crack up! thanks for that.

Girls, don't worry, I am on colace, hi fiber, Mirilax etc. Everything is soft, it's just the fissure is now back, so I just need to keep things "flowing" and not "corking" so it can heal .... TMI!!!  I am a "constipation expert".

The hypersensitivity is nerve stuff, another lady confirmed. Just need to get through it. Will be walking on egg shells and not "jostling" too much until it is better. I was in really good shape before this, and so a few weeks of non-activity I hope won't kill me! I will get back on it when my body says it is time.

SOS for Brenda - I was back on the Wii Fit today for 60 mins!!! Thank you for picking up my exercise slackness!!!  But could you have not have knocked off a bit more weight for me??? LOL!!What a friend!!

The cold is improving - still coughing but not as bad and the aches and pains that my aches and pains had have improved so I'm just back to my 'usual' aches and pains!!! I think my family probably think I'm a pain at this stage. This was the first post BC illness I had and I think I panicked a bit!!! My blood was still down about a month ago and I was nervous that I would be susceptible to infections.  Does this 'canceritis' stage last long? This morning after my shower I noticed a rash under by (remaining) breast - again I went into panic mode before anything else. I realise now that it is probably just a 'sweat' rash as I hadn't worn a bra for the past few days and as I am 'generously (although now lopsidedly) endowed' it would not be unusual for sweat to build up under my breast where it hugs my chest. But first I had to panic!!!!

Spring:I took to my bed for two days with a cold and here you are after major surgery worried that you only made it 1.5 times around the garden!! You are awesome!!

Rachel:Sounds like you had a really great day with DS. You sound organised fashion wise and food wise!! Baked yams and eggplant sounds good.

Kari: Hope the family do goes well - we have one coming up next weekend but don't get me going - it's not exactly what the family intended but one member just hijacked the planning so it's all going to be what that person wants now.

Joy: How exciting to be able to get a hair cut!!! Mine is growing soooo slooowly I think it will be years before I'll have to worry about that. I start at a BC Support Group this coming Friday. I'm such an alarmist I'm sure the other women will think I'm a real flake.

Well DD is back to uni tonight and I'm hoping to try and make a routine for myself over the next few weeks that would cover exercise and diet and incorporate it around what already has to be done in the line of work, housework, looking after mum etc. I also need to seriously declutter my house!!! But I am so bad at doing good, healthy things and I still cannot understand why I just can't get my self in gear considering what I know now about recurrence. Enough ramblings!!!

I'm just off to finish eating all the unhealthy things in the press, fridge etc so that I can start with a clean slate tomorrow!!!!

    Take Care XX

Brendatrue:  "normal" and "unremarkable" are the new words of the day for wonderful!!!!! Thanks for thinking of me.

I am off to take a walk in the gorgeous weather.  At the end of the walk, a pedicure is waiting for me at a salon that is open on Sundays.....a great reward for me!

    Have a nice day all!
