AUGUST 2009 RADS

Guess what - I found the bell!!! They do have one. Amazing, 17 times and I've never heard about it or seen it until today. Well, now I won't feel left out.
After #17 breast has red bumps on chest and upper breast, but other than that looking good. I'm really fair and really surprised. Tiredness better too, some days alot better than others, I just watch what I do and don't get over zealous.
Welcome to all you new ladies. It's a great place to be.
-
I finished treatment #17 today out of 30. I ditched my bra 2 weeks ago and don't plan on wearing one until my skin heals up once I am done with Rads. I was just too sensitive to wear a bra so I just wear loose clothing with printed material so nobody can tell.
-
Hi Gramof3- glad you found the thread. Is the drum circle at work open to all? Jasper is always looking for a new place to drum. As far as I know there was not a bell in the chemo center at St. John's- after seeing some bell ringing pics taken by others on March chemo thread I was jealous and I was glad to see one down in the rads area.
pinkdove- I think I'm having trouble swallowing too- when I get a sinus infection it tends to move down into my throat/post nasal drip and I get this horrible hacking cough- this time I got it again- but way worse. its like it just won't drain down my throat.I know - gross, but I had the worst time trying to sleep last night. I just can't get my throat cleared. the spot in my stomach muscle where they took the graft for my TRAM hurts from my coughing so much.
after the first week or rads I couldn't wear a bra- I wore stretchy camisoles- then about treatment 18 or so those were too itchy- so I have been wearing my softest t shirts only- wearing loose button down shirts over that.
-
hey all - I just thought I would chime in too - haven't posted in a while. I am 17 down with 18 to go so after today I will be over the "hump" yeah! I have a little redness but still not too bad. I am able to still wear a regular bra so for that I am happy - tiredness is not to bad - almost feels more like I am just plain lazy vs. actual tired. I just don't want to do anything in the evenings! Hope everyone is hanging in there
take care

Hi All! Today is my last day! Woo Hoo!! #30 soon to be down! I had to switch to a lightweight sports bra at about #13 and at #23 was told to get a camisole. I had some skin breakdown under the breast and nipple and surgery scars. It has been pretty painful, and applying the burn cream actually makes it sting more! I have been told to "let it air" as much as possible, so have been sleeping topless and now it seems to be getting tight. Since the boosters began the axilla scar is getting really tight and healing nicely. OH Well, this too will pass... I'm just glad to get my time back for regular living - 3 hour committment daily gets old REAL fast! Hope all are doing well! Congrats to all who have finished - especially Dayla who started this thread! Sorry to hear you are not feeling well at the moment. Be Well All!
-
Congrats Fmakj...you are done!
LoriR- We are on about the same schedule..I had my 18th done yesterday with 17 to go! My breast is a little red and get some red spot/bumps, but they go away. Mine is really red around my collar bone where they are hitting the sup. clavicular nodes(??). The aquaphor and aloe vera gel seem to be helping. I am going to use a camisole instead of a bra for Friday to Tues. and see if it makes a difference.
Take care,
Chris
-
ChrisC433 - I think kawee also started rads about the same time we did so there will be a few of us finishing up on the same day or there abouts. I am red but not any real pain and so far no bumps. I am still wearing a bra to work at least but it comes off as soon as I get home. I am a runner too so I will wear a sports bra when I run but that is it. How is your energy level?
Take care
Lori
-
Lori and Chris - Yep, I think we all started on the 17th. I have 35. So we're getting close. My breast looks great, except for the little red bumps on the top.
Energy level not real good, they're going to up my prednisone while I'm doing this because the rads are causing stress on my body with the Lupus. Usually it's very well controlled, but with all my body's been thru, it's no wonder.
Anyway, actually I'm kind of excited, because now I know I CAN DO THIS!!!!!!
-
fmakj Congratulations! I know I felt a big relief after my last treatment. My last day was Aug 20th. Its good to get back to everyday routine. I have been pretty tired even though the treatments are over. I am hoping my energy returns soon. Congrats again.
-
Lori and Kawee,
My energy gets low here and there. Some days are fine, others I just feel wiped out. I am not a napper. Didn't nap all the way through chemo, just layed down. NOW I could nap everyday! I am really putting the cream on now. I put oil on after the shower, then put aloe on that, and then aquaphor on that! I brought aloe to put on during the day now. I put aloe and aquaphor after treatment at 4 and then again at bedtime. I am really trying to prevent blistering and scarring due to my strapless dress for my son's wedding (poor choice in retrospect!).
Keep counting them down......
Chris

Hi, all! Another week down!
Is anyone of you experiencing shortness of breath? I thought it was anxiety at first but it's pretty constant the last few days.
Otherwise doing good. My rads guy told me to use calendula gel by Boiron. It's holding up well. I only have a very slight shade of pink skin...less than my usual sunburn.
-
Cake, I notice it once in a while. I attribute it to fatigue. Are you really tired? I was doing laundry today and when I was switching from washer to dryer I noticed i was short of breath.
-
hiya kawee! I'll definitely pay attention to the fatigue. I hadnt noticed fatigue except for a day here and a day there and the breathing thing just started yesterday. Since I'm practically debilitated with this radiation (joke joke), I think I'll take a nice hot bath now! (so I fake to my family ha ha! just kidding...they're just really nice people!)
-
cake is great: Shortness of breath caused me to ask the rad onc if my lung was compromised from the treatments. He reached over to my last xray and showed me the "yes" extent that my lung was exposed on the xray He showed me where on my body the rays hit and it was above the nipple and to the center of my breast. (Right one) He did however tell me that the only thing I would experience in my future was that this very small part of my lung will show up on a future xray as a shaded area which might cause the tech to suggest pneumona, and I should tell them of my radiation. This exposure caused me to have a small dry cought and shortness of breath but I will add that it is getting better now, 1 1/2 weeks after last treatment.
You might want to ask your rad onc to show you your latest xray and ask if your lung has been compromised. Take care Cathey
-
Kawee and Chris - Yes I do have times were I am totally wiped out for no reason - Last night I slept for 9 hours and while I was at work today all I could think about was coming home and taking a nap but when I got home I was fine.
cakeisgreat - I have been using the calendula and so far so good - I had #19 of 35 today and just a little pink - like you said - I have had far more from a day at the beach.
Cathey - my Rad onc. told me that rad. would be hitting my lung too - he said that the angle at which they had to hit me could not avoid the lung - mine is at 9o'clock on my right side. I did not know about the shading on future x-rays so that is good to know - thx
For everyone who is done - so happy for you! just wondering how the healing is going?
-
Just curious..I'm finished tx 17 yesterday, anyone having general achiness in the breast area. It doesn't feel like surface tissue damage...more like bruising but very deep? Also, is it common in the node area to feel burning? That's where I'm feeling it pretty consistently.
I have insomnia most nights, so I don't even think about napping. I'm envious of all those nappers out there. Anyone else experiencing insomnia from chemo still? It could be from the tamoxifen or left over from chemopause.
Congrats to all of you that have finished. Thanks for sharing with us.
-
BetsyBuzz, yes I do. I'm on Rads # 14, but have had the deep soreness (all over, not just scar) since #8 or so. The thing is, it has hit a plateau and not gotten any worse this week. I'm up to about 3 shades darker on my skin, but overall it's not bad YET, and I am still in a regular bra. So far, so good.
-
Betsey Buzz, I had frequent insomina while finishing up rads- I was alsos starting to get itchy so I took Benedryl almost every night which helped the itching and knocked me out. I also have a xanax rx and I took that a few times too. I hate the idea of taking things to sleep on a regular basis, but I'm still trying to work full time so I was just focused on trying to get enough rest and make it through treatment. The day after my last treatment, I got sick with a sinus infection and have been fighting that for a week. I've taken Nyquil the last couple nights and have slept well.
I have struggled with drinking too much caffeine (and sugar) in the form of soda- the first days I was sick it didn't sound good, so I have at least used this sinus infection to drop the soda- and I was on painkillers for the burned skin so that took care of my caffeine withdrawal headaches.
The skin in my underarm has turned sort of greyish and is peeling off in thick chunks- the crease under my breast is greyish and hurts, I had a fluid filled blister on my TRAM scar on the breast- it was draining out of one spot and I was dabbing at it and a whole chunk of skin came loose. ewww. I just looked at the raw skin underneath and thought I'm glad I can't feel that. (no sensation in the TRAM breast). But around it is very tender and I am still taking hydrocodone every few hours, whenever I move, I hold the breast in place so it doesn't pull.
I think it turned the corner a couple days ago- its getting better rather than worse, same with the sinus infection.
-
BetsyBuzz, My breast is very sore. Feels kind of like before you start you period. Although I don't have periods anymore. Plus I have these shooting pains. I don't sleep very good at all since I started rad. I sleep fitfully, dream and wake up alot. Be glad when I can get a good nights sleep. And as I keep on saying, breast still looks good. Amazing since I am so fair. I have 9 regulars to go and 7 boosts. Don't have any pain in node area tho. Really, really tired.
-
Wow Alyad...you are the first person that has explained how truly damaged the tissue can get. All I can say I hope you heal fast!
I too struggle with the idea of sleeping pills but have given up and take a half dose (5 mg) Ambien about every third night. Otherwise, I can not sleep more than three hours. I've been working full time too and need sleep to function. I did ask my onc about it and he said insomnia can last for several months after chemo and don't be concerned about it. I figure if it's still happening when I visit him in Nov., I will get more concerned. I've tried varying my activity...weekends no pills, have reduced my caffeine (1 c of java/day -no pop), stay up later, exercise more, etc. nothing seems to work. Oh well..I hope this too shall pass soon.
Betsy

I'm sorry if I grossed anyone out with description of peeling skin. I guess I heard peeling skin was possible and I was thinking oh like when I sunburn, but this is for sure worse than a sunburn. I am kind of curious where I fall as far as average amount of damage. I feel like I'm on the high side. I wasn't really prepared for this level of discomfort. Being sick didn't help.
I thought I read somewhere the IMRT I had caused less burning than regular rads- or rather I think I read about a third of people on IMRT have skin issues, where about half with regular do. I guess I'm in the lucky third. I do have really fair skin and burn really easily.
I have been taking pics just for my own documentation of the process.
still I have no regrets. I don't see how any cancer cells could survive the blasting they got. I'm young, I'll heal.
-
Alyad - What is IMRT? I usually research a new term, but frankly, I'm too tired.
-
IMRT is Intensity Modulated Radiaton therapy- also called Tomotherapy- its a more precise means of deilvering rads- but also requires more precise positioning- I had a mold over me and I got a CT scan every treatment - each time I was there about 45 min. I had left side, TRAM recon, and inner quadrant tumor location (so the Lymph node chain that runs up the side of the sternum was radiated). so having IMRT meant less of my heart and lungs was hit.
-
Alyad - Thanks for the info.
Does anyone out there have body aches?
-
Alyad,
Did I PM you about the MSU drum circle? Maybe I sent to FB? I remember writing, but can't find it on "My Home" here...
Helen
-
Kawnee - I had severe body aches while on Taxol but a couple of weeks later those symptoms disappeared. Right now I am just dealing with sheer exhaustion.
-
Jancie - Didn't we start around the same day, Aug. 17. Me too, I am absolutely exhausted. Went shopping with my husband, hesitantly, yesterday for about 3 hours. Could not get up out of my chair yesterday and even today, still exhausted.
-
I just wanted to jump in. I have had 8 of 25 treatments and things are going pretty good. The breast is slightly sore and raw feeling but just slightly pink. I am using the cream they gave me after treatments and at night. It is wonderful to have this forum of others that are going through the samething at the sametime. I can't wear a bra but the cami's with the shelf bra is working pretty good right now.
I also have not heard a bell, I will need to get curious and ask.
-
CAKE, LORI, JANCIE, CHRIS - Haven't heard from you guys. Are you as tired as me and too tired to type? I am so exhausted, I have a flat butt from sitting in this recliner. Will it never end? I know the autoimmune thing comes in to play here, but good grief, no one told me it would be like this. I've got 7 more and then 6 boosts. I know all you are about right with me. Will it never end. Sorry, I'm just emotional, grouchy and TIRED!!
-
Half way done today. Still just slightly red and a little tender. Using Aloe as the rad/onc said. Tired but I don't ususally sleep well so hard to tell if it is from rads or that. I haven't really slept well since starting menopause. No problems from Tamox so far. Hopefully all will continue to go well. Got my genetics back yesterday, BRCA 1 and 2 negative. That is a relief but they still want my sister tested since she has had invasive breast cancer twice. I think she will have it done but of course just switched to not so good insurance.
