Working after surgery

Options

I will be having a double mastectomy in the next few months and I've read that people have gone back to work after a couple of weeks.  What did you wear?  Did you wear a bra or camisole?  Since I won't be able to get fitted for a prosthesis for about 6 weeks, what do you do in the mean time?

    Hi Laura

I only had a single, but I went back after about a week and a half ( scheduled it around Christmas break so I'd have more time off). If you have a double, I can't imagine you'll want to wear a bra. I got a bunch of "undershirts" or camisole- there are a few made for skiers and such, and jockey makes some nice ones.. They were very soft and didn't irratate the skin and protected my skin from anything else rubbing.   After a while I went back to a bra - for the one breast. It was winter, so with a sweater or blazer it wasn't all that noticable.with just the cami  Check out the thread about dressing for "boobless" days if you are worried.  Some people use the puff in the camisole. It didn't fit me right and the velcro irratated my skin so I just used my undershirts. You'll be suprised how little people notice

I had a unilateral and wore a bra with a fiberfill puffy two weeks after my surgery.  It seemed to work O.K. and didn't hurt.

    Hi Laura,

Please check my other posts. Often, a local mastectomy boutique or the American Cancer society will provide you with post-surgical camisole with puffies to put in it as a gift to go home in.  If you like it you can order more.

Another option is to go flat, wearing a soft t-shirt or shell with an open shirt layered over it.

You won't be wanting to put a bra on for several weeks...

Hope this helps & hope it goes well for you!

    Sue
