AUGUST 2009 RADS

Great, Cake, half way there! I have to have 28 rads and 7 boosts, so i have four weeks left.
Didn't know what a bc.org-ers was, but DUH, finally figured it out. How to you find any? Sounds like a great thing to do.
-
cakeisgreat - you and I are on the exact same schedule!! Except, I don't get radiation this coming monday as it is a holiday which means I will not end on a Friday after all. I have 1/2 DONE! Just 15 more treatments!
My boob is permanently pink now. At least they can see if they are hitting the right place
I can't wear a bra anymore - it hurts.
Are you as tired as I am? I switched my appts to 1:30 pm daily and the last two nights I have slept 12 hours each time. I didn't even get up until noon today!
-
I had my last treatment today! Whoo hoo!!
I took a small video clip and have it on facebook, I wanted to share the link but I haven't figured it out yet. After I was done I was running out to the waiting room to get my husband so he could come take t he vidoe of me ringing the bell and I saw ccbaby/ Christy in the dressing room waiting for her treatment! That was really cool that she was there at that time!
The itching was really bugging me a lot and I decided to take a hydrocodone to see if that would help- I feel way better! I think I'll try just tylenol and see if that helps tomorrow.
-
Yes, it was awesome to see Dayla today ring the bell for her last treatment!! I was happy for her, but jealous too! LOL I have 23 to go. Then after I was done today, I saw Gramof3 in the restroom!
-
Alyad, congratulation on being finished. Anti-inflammatory will help with the itching, I use Aleve, and it really has helped.
Its nice that you had ccbaby there when you got to ring the bell.
-
Hi, Jacie! Bummer! I thought I was 1/2 way through, but I found out today that I'm getting 33 rads, so I'm "almost" 1/2 way...I'll be done on October 1. Cool!
Yep, I took a looong nap today which was very nice. But I find that sometimes I'm tired and some days are pretty good. The rads doc said my skin is looking good so far...I'm slightly pink but not too bad yet. I am SO fair skinned (and had a melonoma), that it's nice to hear my skin is doing something nice for once!
Congrats Alyad!!!! It's great (so to speak) to see you have some buddies along side you in this thing!
-
Congratulations Alyad! We have a bell at ours too! Do ALL the cancer centers have bells to ring, I wonder?
-
I haven't heard or seen any bell at the place I go.
I've been feeling much better since they upped my steriods for a few days. Feel almost normal. I take a nap everyday, and the breast still looking good, only those inflammed hair folicles.
How do they do boosts for those of you who've had them? I understand it's only on the scar area. Do they just aim it differently? Don't know why I have to have 7. Maybe HER2+.
-
kawee, I'm also on a plan to get 33 Tx total, and the last 7 of mine are the boosts too. Never did ask how they figure out how many. I have heard it is kind of a formula based on stage, grade & location of the cancer, but not sure. I have 23 more to go.
-
Elimar - Maybe I'll ask the rad onc if I think of it. I'm scheduled for 20 more, originally 35. So, how are you doing with yours?
-
We had a bell in the chemo area and yes......I think I must have rang it at least 12 times. There wasn't anybody sleeping at the time.
There is also a bell in the Rads department and I will be ringing that one also! Whoever came up with that idea is brilliant!
-
Jancie - What does the bell signify? Like I said, I've never seen or heard one here.
I think we both started our rads on Aug. 17.
-
Kawee - They use it as a celebration for completing your treatment. The bells at the chemo and rads center hang on the wall and you get to ring it on the day of your last treatment. Then everyone in the vicinity claps for you, etc. It lets everyone know that you are finally done with your treatment and it does feel so great to be able to go up and ring the heck out of the bell. Well.....at least I did. I don't know if everyone rings it to the extent I did but it sure made me feel really good.
-
8 more to go...yes!!!!
my breast feels as it has grown big. its much bigger than the other boob. also it is so hard. and pink. the real troube is the ares below the neck. it is real sensitive- burns, itches and has turned sooo red. i apply aelo vera cream on the afftected area.
Is this all normal?
-
Pinkdove your reaction sounds a lot like mine- its normal- around treatment 19/25 I started getting very red and itchy- mostly in my armpit and upper chest area like you described. It has continued to get worse through the last treatments- I am really glad I am done, but I probably have another week of discomfort to deal with. Taking antiinflammatories helps some. I developed a sinus infection yesterday that has made me really damn miserable this holiday weekend.
ask your onc for something stronger than aloe vera- I got an rx for cilvadene cream and 2.5% hydrocortisone. Regular tylenol helps but taking hydrocodone made me feel almost normal before the sore throat and sinus headache.
hang in there

Congratulations to those of you finishing rads. and keep your chins up for those of you in the middle of rad. It will be over soon. I finished on Aug 20th so its been a couple weeks. Im actually more tired now than I was while doing rads. My skin is slowing returning to normal. I have had lots of peeling. The huge square tan that I got from reg. rads is disappearing and the pink-redness has lightened so much from the boosts after two weeks of no radiation and the swelling has gone down tremendously to almost normal. Please have faith that you will get thru it. I did. Love you all. PS. I am also suffering from sinus infection too. Made the whole weekend miserable.
-
Hi guys! Today I get to bring my 4 KIDS to the radiation waiting room cuz I have no babysitter. My hubby "forgot" and made a dentist appointment.
This is too funny
Ya gotta love them! (Glad he can forget about cancer for a few minutes!!!)
Have fun y'all today at your rads appt!
-
Hi cakeisgreat,
Why not send the kids to the dentist with dad? that might be more fun.
....
Any way good luck today, what part of the world are you from. Maybe someone lives close by and can help.

Hi cake: wish you lived in Indiana. There is a foundation that provides women in Indiana who are going through rad $500.00 to be used for child care and many other helpful things while going through treatments. Their site is www.iwinfoundation.org . Maybe they have such a thing where you live. Take care of yourself. Cathey from Indiana
-
Alyad- i forgot to mention.. i am having problem swollowing too. The doc prescribed an anti-inflamatory. hope that helps. Though he keeps saying 'no' to anything stronger than aelo-vera cream.
6 more to go. The last 5 will be 'boosts'.

10 down, 20 to go. Does anyone know why they do an x-ray every week? I am going to ask the doctor when I see her this week. So far, so good but am waiting for the 3rd week when it sounds like most side effects start. Planning life as usual and hoping I am not too exhausted to participate.
-
Peg 119 - They told me it's quality control, to be sure you're being radiated in the same place, where it needs to be, all the time.
Going into 4th week, gulp, we'll see what happens!
-
That is what they told me to about the Xray to make sure they were still on target. Didnt have them with the boosts but that is such a smaller area. I also thought to make sure they werent hitting your lungs and I was thinking my heart also(right breast for me) Its really funny because in the beginning they draw their lines and tatoo you and then in several weeks your tan line is exactly in those line areas. Then you move on to the boosts and they draw their lines and again you are radiated right in their lines so it has to be pretty accurate.
-
ikat...I laughed out loud when I read that they should go to the dentist. That would end up being on America's funniest videos. Oooh, I could be rich!
O3132W--I think there is something like that around here...I remember the "slam" day when I got all the news and information, and recall child care being in there. But they go back to school tomorrow, and I'll do the rest of the rads when they're in school. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll keep it in mind if I need to get more treatment sometime (HOPEFULLY NOT!).
Definitely more sunburned and dry today. I wish I could tan!
-
cakeisgreat I knew I could make you laugh.... did you suggest it to your husband, you should have maybe then he would have realized the error of his ways. But then again maybe not he is a man after all.
I have one treatment left today... I have burned now I am tanning, NOT A PRETTY SIGHT AT ALL!
My only advice is use some kind of moisturizer, and lots of it.
Have a great day.
-
I'm a little slow about joining this thread--just finished 10/36 today. Dr. says everything looks "fine," however, it's not his breast that is being baked. Just hope the rads are doing what they're supposed to do. There's a good article in yesterday's Time Magazine about treating the immune system as a new approach to cancer treatment. Talks about chemo, rads, and now vaccines. Hope it proves to be effective.
I loved going to the drum circle and meeting Alyad--I see they're starting one at my work place, too, so think I will check it out as well.
And, I've run into CCBaby twice now--once in the rest room and today in the dressing room! I didn't know about the bell--was there one in the infusion center, too?
Take care Ladies. Helen

11 down, 19 to go. Just starting to get a little red and some soreness. Not bad yet.
-
I'd like to jump into this group since I'm also having rads throughout the month of September. I had #11 today and am now 1/3 through with the process.
I have just started getting a little redness, oddly enough it seemed to occur directly after today's session (either that or I'm just not that observant). My Rad Onc gave me several small tubes of Aquafor and said a "little goes a long way." She said that the 2 tiny tubes could probably last through the remainder of the rads. I find that if I put in on while damp it seems to work pretty well. (It actually makes a pretty nice handcream.)
Q - Does anyone still have a Seroma, and if so have you been told that you will probably need an additional Sim? Also, I'm almost embarrassed to admit it but I don't really understand the bra thing. I have been wearing my regular bra which is not an underwire but should I expect to have a problem with it.
-
I also hadn't really noticed much redness until after todays (11) treatment. I am still just using Aloe as that what is what rad onc says to use. I am still wearing my regular bra and wear a sports bra as needed for volleyball. I think it is okay as long as it doesn't cause too much discomfort.
