Penguin cold caps

Options

I've decided to go through chemo (12 weeks taxol/carbo) and will be trying the cold caps to prevent hair loss.

Has anyone with this regimen used the caps? any success? I really would like to get short sweet answers directly related to the cold cap use. Thanks

Yep! I've been helping 2 women with the caps, and they do work. They are both on the Taxotere/Cytoxan regimen. You can go to the website to see the effectiveness of the caps when on various regimens. Look on the 'Drug Compatibility' page. http://www.msc-worldwide.com/index.html

If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

    2. Do i need help with these? I'm doing this on my own.

    3. do you know of any black women that have used these?

    4. how strict is the no heat styling rule?

    5. how much do they cost?

Are there any other ladies on this website that have/are using these? I don't want to be directed to the website, I want a first hand testimonial good or bad.

Cold cap treatment works, I am doing it now.

And I think the lady above was trying to help you.  I have seen her and a lot of other people on recent threads with regard to cold caps.  Maybe if you re-read your last posting, you will see that it is not as pleasant or polite as you meant it to be.

its fine to me. and you shouldn't read emotions into chat. i'm being as direct with this inquiry as i need/want to be. I'm about to pay half of my monthly salary on this and I would really like to hear some more testimonials besides makingway. She is the most vocal person on the boards, and she constantly refers people to the website. Thats cool, but I want to hear from ppl who are actively using them. I spoke with the cap creator, and he told me that he thought that "his" ppl were posting on this site. If these "ppl" are in his employ, why would I trust them? they are salesppl.

What can YOU tell me about the caps. what tx are you on? what has been your experience?

I am using the Penguin Cold Caps and still have most of my hair going into my 3rd TC infusion on Fri, 9/4.  Because I am getting neo-adjuvant (before surgery chemo), the actual effectiveness of the chemo on my cancer is able to be observed.

I had an MRI on 8/24 and an appt with my onc on 8/26.  He was visibly excited when he came into the room to talk to me.  He said that I had a phenomenal response to my first 2 infusions and that such a strong response this early in the TC regimen is very unusual.  The 2 smaller tumors are no longer seen on MRI and the volume of the primary tumor had shrunk to 35% of its original size.  He and his staff were also surprised to see me show up with a full head of hair.

The cold caps do not seem to have had any adverse impact on the efficacy of the chemo drugs in my case.

malaika, I am the one who told Frank about the other thread on this forum that another PCC user had started.  If he said he thought "his" ppl were posting here, I think he meant women using his cold caps, not employees.

hi lori...i responded to you on another thread today. Congrats again!

I am sure Frank meant "his" ppl. We talked for almost an hour, and he repeated himself several times. He told me that he hadn't heard of the site though and planned to look at it.

Hi, Lori, that's great news.  I  meant that the use of coldcaps was thought to adversely affect the action of chemo in the brain area only, not overall.  The fear is that if there are any brain micromets the cold cap will prevent the chemo from working on them.

First off, let me start by saying I am not an employee of the Penguin Cold Caps Co. But I am trying to get the word out there to everyone before doing chemo 'YOU DON"T HAVE TO LOSE YOUR HAIR'!!! Why doesn't everyone know about this??? It is baffling to me...I am going to use them if/when I decide to do chemo. I looked into these and it sounded promising. I PM'd other people on this board who have used them with success and spoke with them on the phone. I am helping 2 ladies with them who are presently getting chemo. I have spoke with Frank the inventor of the new caps-don't confuse them with the caps of 10 years ago-they are not the same. When Frank referred to his 'ppl' he didn't mean employees. He meant women on this board who have used the caps.

malaika:  I see that no one has answered your questions, so I'll do my best.

    1. I don't know anything about a patient representative.

    2. You definitely need help with applying the caps.  The helper has to go to the cooler every 30 minutes, select a cap that had the proper temperature and help apply it as tightly as possible.  It would be very difficult to do with 2 free arms and with an IV in one arm, impossible IMO.

    3. I don't know of any black women who have used the caps, But I've only spoken to 4 women total.  Frank would be your best source of info on that.

    4. I follow the no heat styling rule with the exception of an occasional use of a curling iron on the longer parts of my hair away from the scalp.  If I use a blow dryer, I use it on the cool setting for as brief a period as possible.  I'm very gentle with my hair and even wash it less often than usual.

    5. The company can provide you with the cost, which is in pounds that get converted to dollars.

I hope this is helpful.  It might also be a good idea to consolidate this discussion on the other PCC board as more have participated there.  Feel free to PM me if you want my telephone number to ask more specific questions.

    Best wishes!

Hi Lori - glad to see you are keeping up the good work!!  I am getting on ok using the fixed system (Paxman machines).  My hair has thinned but is generally good.  I should really have had it cut short I think, but was reluctant to do so.  I have lost a bit on the back of my head, which I think is because hthe hat wasn't tight enough there, but I overall I am happy with my progress.  Haven't lost eyebrows or lashes as yet.  Fingers crossed!!

Do hope you and all the other girls are doing well -

    coolest regards!!!!       xxx

I have just finished my last TCH treatment 12/09/2009.  Will continue with Herceptin until July, 2010.  I used the Penguin Cold Caps and am pretty pleased.  My hair has thinned quite a bit especially after the 5th treatment but I don't need a wig.  I have not lost eyebrows or eyelashes and still have to occasionally shave my legs (go figure).  Anyway, my new thing to stress over is I have found out I will need to take tamoxifen which has thinning hair listed as a side effect.  I was looking forward to my hair thickening up.  But, I guess that is not going to happen for me.  Does any one have any experience with this?  Just wondering if anyone used the cold caps with success only to lose their hair when they had to take tamoxifen.  Thanks so much for any replies!  Angie

I was wondering how long  after the last chemo treatment does the hair stop falling out?  I've been on TC.
