Hair Hair Hair - Another question

rachelbc - wow - sounds like he is going to really make an effort to try and figure out our chemo hair- fantastic!! I have noticed that different coloring products I've put on in the past 4 1/2 months all work the same way - the hair color is very muddy. What he says makes sense. I'll be in NYC Sep 23-27 for the Look Good Feel Better Ball and makeover thing, but if the makeover does not involve hair color, I would definitely love to get together with your friend! Once my duties for the contest are over (Friday afternoon until Sunday morning), I will be staying with my sis at her apartment in the city and should have some time to work with him - I will be a willing experiemental head!!
-
Rachelbc - also, I just went to the site and saw his address, he's very close to my sister's apt., she's on 14th, between B & C, so it's just a few blocks from there. Cool!
Lisa1964 - aren't you glad you only spent $5 each on that shampoo and conditioner from the hair show? I agree - taking gentle care of your hair, using good shampoos and conditioners, are going to be the only thing to do until it is grown in. I did use Nioxin follicle booster, and I think it did help get my hair started somewhat, and really did help with my brows. The rest? Time. Patience . . . which I still do not have!!
-
Hi Everyone.....I had an appt today with a dermatologist because I have had a long case of folliculitis....two months worth. Oddly as soon as I made the appt it began to clear up! Anyway I asked him for recommendations regarding hair growth. He said the hair needs iron in order to grow. So if we are deficient in iron the hair growth will be exceedingly slow. Suggested taking a low dosage iron supplement as it can create constipation. If that is not working then it can also be a thyroid issue. So if we are having SLOW hair issues it might be worth getting these two things checked in a blood test. Just wanted to share this info with you gals..... Patti
-
That's interesting, Patti. I'll check my multivitamin to make sure it has iron in it. Hope the folliculitis is better - did they give you anything for it? I was three weeks before it started clearing up.
Definitely going to be on the curly train - the back is starting to get very wavy and I swear the top of my head looks like Kramer from Seinfeld.
-
Hey Rachelle, I wasn't sure if Joesph was interested in helping but it sounds like he is. I would love to volunteer but I think I've already messed up my hair and I'm in Oregon. Thanks for setting up a site for him.
-
CristlC, are you seeing a huge difference with the relaxer? Do you recomend it? I would love to see some before and after pictures. Besides having these tight tight curls, they are rather frizzy too. Were yours? Looks like I got a tight perm and in the process it fried my hair.
Chelev, are you going to post pictures after your make over? We would love to see.

Hi ladies...sounds like most of you are ahead of me on the hair front but I have a question. My peach fuzz looks very pale and colorless. Prior to chemo I had dark brown hair. Is my peach fuzz an indicator for my future hair color or at some point does it change?
Betsy
-
The peach fuzz does seem to come in colorless but it will change. My hair was a dark brown before, but I think it is even a little darker brown now and the grays I had before are either gone or less noticeable. I just wish I had more hair. I am 7 months PFC and I have about 2 inches of straight hair.
-
Has anyone tried hair extensions?
-
I am soooooo getting extensions!!! My hair is too short right now to get the extensions to blend with the "Kramer Head" (loved that Chelev!), but in about 2 weeks and am buying some dang bangs!
-
The only reason I'm not getting extensions is that my hair stylist says they really damage your existing hair... any thoughts?
-
At least I don't have much to damage!! I thought they glued them to your head?
-
How much do they cost? The site I was looking at said $500-$2000!!!!
-
I use Women's Rogiane ( Walgreen version). it takes a while but it helps.
-
Hi, everyone. Okay, here I am at 21 weeks PFC - I just took these. Take a look at the Kramer hair on top, and curl girls - is this what YOUR hair looked like in the back before the curls exploded? I know I need color - this is why if I don't get it done with the makeover, I definitely need Rachelbc's friend!!!

The light isn't good outside right now - it was sunny, but the big dark summer rain clouds are back for their usual afternoon showers, so it's really overcast, hence the squinting. Happy to see that looking back at my other photos, my face is getting a little thinner from working out.
-
Chelev - you look great!
Judy xoxox
-
Chelev you look FABULOUS DAHHHLING!!! I have colored my hair to very blond I like it. I do not have nearly your length! I am 20 weeks PFC. I will post a pic soon.
-
I don't post very often but absolutely enjoy reading these posts!!! Chelev and the other gals... thank you for posting your pics!!! They are inspiring!!! I have one more tax to go and I have about a 1/4" of hair. It's gone past the peach fuzz and I guess I'll be entering the "ostrich" phase soon. I'll try to post some pics when we get back from up north...
Anyway, the reason I'm posting is I saw my doc today and he told me to take zinc and magnesium. He said it's a "fertilizer" for hair... Has anyone else heard this? I went and bought some and started today...we'll see.
Have a blessed holiday weekend...
-
Thanks, Bold!!! And, thanks, Arnie2two!! It really doesn't feel like it's growing alot until you look at earlier photos and then you see, wow, okay, it is moving!
I realized the back of my head looks just like my brother's - he's got the same wavy hair.
-
Chelev, I had to go back and look at all my pictures.
Yep, looks like my head! You have really filled in since your last post of a picture. You look great and your color is wonderful too.
I couldn't agree with you more about it never seeming like it's growing until you look at previous pictures, which is why I did mine monthly. There is a link on my profile of my hair progress. Yours looks like my Jan/Feb pictures.
Hang in there....it's coming....and it looks like the beginning of the CURLS!

Good morning ladies and I'm new to this thread. I've enjoyed reading all your posts and only wish I was where all of you are with your hair growing back. I am getting ready to begin chemo in the next couple weeks and am so scared of losing my hair. I know that it's really a silly thought and being healthy is the only thing I should be focused on but I just can't seem to get passed these feelings. Were all of you scared as well and will these feelings get better? There are days that I feel as though I'm going to have a nervous breakdown......how did you guys get to the point you are now? I need help and advise on how to get through this. I have a little boy I want to see grow up and without doing chemo, I'm afraid that I won't be able to. Any advice?
-
Chelev, thanks for posting your pics .... I love your hair. It's adorable and I'm sure the "kramer look" will settle down once it grows more. I'm 11 weeks PFC and all I have is the start of a little peach fuzz on some parts of my head. I will too will check my mult-vitamin for iron. Am I the only one who's hair is coming in soooo slowly?
-
Hey, Hair girls, Love the pics. I am see the little white hairs coming up through the scalp. Seems like the journey has along way to go. Did anyone whose hair came back during chemo, did it grow slow or did you loss any.
Cabmom, we were all scared. The hair thing is all part of it and it will go fast. I have 3 treatments left and my hair is coming back. Strength and Hugs Dianne

Chelev...
!!!
cabmom... I'm sure we all felt the same way as you do. Losing our hair is a legitimate fear. Once you move past that fear... and you will... you'll realize that it will grow back. I, personally, cut my hair to about 1" a week and a half after my first chemo. Then, I totally buzzed it at two weeks when it started falling out. My wig is very close to my natural hair... even people that know I've been thru chemo have no idea it's a wig. You'll be okay... we're here for you!
-
Cabmom - your fears are completely understandable. I found losing my hair really difficult. I had it cut v short before it started falling out and then rubbed the rest out in the shower when I saw it coming out properely.
I always found that my hair defined me as a woman - it is v strange, because I had a bilateral mastectomy and my reconstruction did not work so now I am flat chested, but my hair still bothers me more, at the moment - go figure. I found chemo v hard, I spent a lot of the time crying and feeling v low, I thought that it would never end, but it did and now I am 5.5 weeks out of it. I am feeling stronger every day, my hair is showing very slight signs of growing in and apart from stomach issues which I am hoping will heal in time I am doing much better.
We are all here for you! You do not have to do this alone! Write any time you need to!
Take care, Judy xxxxx

Sweet cabmom! I can say that I felt awful too. losing our hair is a big thing at first. I had to keep my eye on the prize! That prize was to have many more years on this beautiful earth with the people that I love. I too cut my hair short and then buzzed it. It seemed to be the only way.
Time passes and you will soon be right where I am now again filled with energy uber short (very blond and edgy) hair and reclaiming happiness and laughter. My wigs were fabulous (I had many) each one had a name and a back story. I looked great in them. I wore hats at home when there was someone around. I admit that it was difficult to see my reflection at first and I cried often. I am so grateful that I made it and you will be too. We are soooooo much stronger than we realize. You can and will do this. I had a goal of trying to do it with GRACE. We really have no choice so we might as well resolve to get through it and be with the people we love and not burden ourselves with the things that we can not change. You have a good prognosis!!!!! You just have to walk through this take care of yourself for a change. Put yourself first. Get the help you need. Please try to see that it is only temporary. It sucks but it can be done!!!!
Be nice to you.
Rita

Ahhh Cabmom! It is completely normal to feel that way. I too was so scared and upset to be losing my hair. In a way I felt guilty I was so upset about it. BUT here we all are and it is growing back. Just take one day at a time and get through that day. I tried to look at it as one more milestone... once it is gone then you move into the chemo part and then can get it done. You will get through it! I have learned I am much stronger than I thought. Sending hugs your way,
Cristl -
Chevel, I am 7 months PFC and your hair is longer than mine! Mine is curlier too.
How damaging the extensions are depends on which type. Some are woven into natural hair, some are glue to the scalp and some are clipped on the natural hair. The price can vary greatly.
-
Chelev - thanks for posting that picture! You are just adorable!! I wish my hair was as long as yours. Right now I have the Mia Farrow type look as I was told last night and then someone else told me I looked like Jaime Lee Curtis when she chopped off her hair. Believe me they were talking about my hair and not my body!!!!
Cabmom - I cried like crazy when I heard I needed to do chemo. I refused to let anyone see me bald including my hubby. I bought some nice soft sleepcaps and wore those around the house. It has only been the last 2 to 3 weeks that I can go around without a cap on my head. Last night I went to church with no wig or hat for the very first time and I was scared to death. What you are feeling now is what most of us have gone through when we found out we were going to lose our hair. It is ok to have pity partys - the girls here totally understand!
-
I can't believe that for the first time ever on this page, I have longer hair than some of my sweet, wonderful sisters!!!! Maybe it's making up for the time lost to the folliculitis??
Cabmom - the day I cut my long, beautiful hair was the worst day i cried during this entire dx. I didn't cry the day I was dx'd. I cried my head off all day when we decided to do chemo and go and get my hair cut. It was traumatic. It was theraputic. I was like Rita, I had several beautiful wigs that I wore - different lengths, slightly different colors, and I wore them depending on the mood I was in that day. I did not want anyone to see me bald - not even me! But, as the hair started coming back I realized that I had made it. I survived chemo and so far, am surviving the beast - and the hair does come back. I think all of us went through those dark, scary days (and weeks) of looking at our shiny scalps, terrified that the hair wouldn't come back. When you lose your hair, especially for a woman, it seems, you lose a part of your identity. But, as you'll see from these boards, every woman here who has gone through it has grown from this experience, not only hair growing, but our spirits growing. You will do it!! You can do it! Frustrating? Heck yes. Annoying and self pitying? Yes. But, it means you are alive and you will be you no matter what is or isn't on your head. Go ahead and cry. Get it out. It will be tough, but you will get through!
