Second Opinions

Options

I was wondering what is the best diplomatic way to tell your current oncologist that you would like a second opinion? I have been going to him for 5 years and just dx with liver and bone mets.

I am having a liver bx tomorrow and then will plan treatment. I have all the confidence in the world in him, but want to go to M D Anderson for second opinion. I know he will be ok with it, but I feel bad telling him and I know I shouldn't!

 Thanks--

xoxo

A stage IV diagnosis changes everything.  I would explain to your current onc that for your peace of mind and to explore all your options, you would like to get a second opinion at MD Anderson and to check out their facilities/programs..  You will likely find that your onc will totally support your decision and may even assist you in getting an appointment.   My onc gave me a referral to the University of Michgan and even got me a quick appointment.  IN the end I came back to her which she knew I would.  She travels with the U of M doctors and her treatment protocol is much the same.   You will feel better once you get a second opinion and then you will know whatever treatment you undergo is well researched and the best option for you.   You may also want to see what clinical studies MD Anderson is doing that you might qualify for also.

Best of luck on your liver biopsy.  It is not nearly as bad as it sounds.

    Jennifer,

That is a perfect way to state why I want and need a second opinion. Thanks, I am going to use that at my next appointment. Fortunately we have a contact at M D Anderson and he is going to help us in scheduling the appointment.

I am hoping for the best tomorrow and glad to hear the bx not so bad.

While it feels disloyal to you to tell your onc that you are going for a second opinion, you can be 100% sure it is something that he/she deals with all the time.  This is your life and only an onc that isn't worth his/her salt would have a problem with your being proactive about your treatment.  Good luck!!

    Robin,

I totally agree with you. I have an appointment next week with MD Anderson. When I called my current oncologist to get all my records faxed to MDA they told me they do it all the time!
