My mom was just diagnosed with DCIS today.  It is stage 3 but only in one small area.  The doctor that did the biopsy said he thinks he got most of it and referred her to a surgeon for what he called a "limited lumpectomy"  My biggest concern is that she had a lumpectomy 10 years ago and had radiation therapy on the same breast.  Everything I read says you can't repeat the radiation treatment, does this limit her treatment options?  She will be 80 this year.

External, or whole breast, radiation can only be done one time - not sure of the time frame, though.  I just had MammoSite, or partial breast radiation, and that can be done more than once on the same breast, and while there are specific parameters for this treatment, it is a 5 day twice a day regimen - much easier and with no skin burning - for me at least - like I had when I had 37 days of whole breast radiation several years ago on my other breast. I strongly urge you to ask the surgeon about MammoSite for your Mom!

Hope all goes well for your Mom!

    Hugs, Mary
