DIEP in NY

Nancy, I'm in Manhattan everyday for work so it's not really a problem to get to anyone in NYC. I work not too far from Dr. Smith's office so I was hoping to get even more info about him. Thanks, though, to you and Angel for the rec of Dr. Israeli. I'm putting together a list of highly recommended Drs to consider.
-
NancyD, I used Dr. Smith and he definitely takes credit cards! I will PM you some additional information and feel free to PM me with any questions. In terms of the lipo thing, I think a lot of PS will lipo the areas around your scars, donor sites, etc if you want them to as part of their follow-up. My understanding of how the NOLA group differs from other PS is that they will lipo other areas not part of the surgery (like thighs, etc) --kind of like working from a "whole body" perspective, instead of just the areas that have been involved in the surgery (that's the impression I have but I didn't use them, so I might be wrong about this.) I haven't heard about other PS doing this type of body contouring, unless you specifically pay for it......insurance wouldn't cover it as far as I know. I have to head out now but will PM you later.
-
Ladies you have all been so awesome sharing your information and now the thread is opening up for more women looking for the same info. I still have not had an appointment yet but I am going to Sloan strictly for a 2nd opinion and then I will be seeing Dr.Keller for a PS consult next week. -
Nancy & others,
You may wish to consider Robert Allen, DIEP pioneer, who trained all the Nola guys, He has performed more DIEP procedures than probably any other micro-vascular surgeon. Average O.R. times are 6-8 hours for a bilateral. Works in NYC @ 2 different hospitals, NYU Langone Medical Center or NY Eye & Ear with his partner, Joshua Levine. There are 2 fabulous breast surgical oncologists at NYU that work regularly with Allen. Nipple sparing is offered as well. I have seen a couple of his amazing results with nipple sparing DIEP procedures myself. Outstanding and highly skilled surgeons. See website below:

Omahagirl,
I too used Dr Israeli and he is amazing. I had LCIS and had a PBM with direct implants. Next I have to have nipple reconstrution then I'm done. My friend just had DIEP done by him also and is very happy with him and the way she looks. I will also recommend a BS to you.
I'm also sendig you a PM

Hi there,
Another huge fan of Dr. Israeli here. He is great. His whole staff is wonderful. I had my reconstruction with LD flaps and tissue expanders done by him and I'm having my exchange surgery done by him in 2 weeks. I have only good things to say about him and his practice.
Dr Israeli only works out of North Shore in Manhasset, and not LIJ. Dr.Keller will only work out of LIJ and not North Shore Manhasset. Yes, they are supposed to be the same system, but it seems they aren't really.
I recommend you have a consultation with Dr. Israeli, he is on Northern Blvd in Manhasset/Great Neck.
-
Oh and Dr. Feingold who someone else mentioned on this thread is Dr. Israeli's partner.
My breast surgeon was Dr. Mansoor Beg. He works with Dr. Israeli a lot and I also recommend him. I've heard only good things about Dr. Karen Kostroff too.
-
lifegoseson,
Dr Israeli does operate out of LIJ. That's where I had my surgery and I'm going back there for the nipple reconstruction.
Swimgirl...You used Dr Israeli too?? He's so nice great Dr. too

I am from PA and drive 3 hours to go to Dr Israeli .Totally worth the drive. He is wonderful and his staff is also. I had a BM in April with DR Chin (loved her) she also works with Dr Israeli. I have TE and I am doing an exchange in a week and a half.
lifegoeson , sounds like we are having our exchanges with Dr Israeli around the same time. Which hospital? Mine is at NSUH Syosset, my BM and reconstruction was at LIJ.

Hi iamrosey2,
I am scheduled for a DIEP surgery on Sept 8 at Mayo in Phoenix with Dr.Kreymerman. I had a mastectomy 15 years ago and now have cancer in the other breast. They are going to do the mx and restorative surgery at the same time. So far I am very pleased with the general surgeon and the plastic surgeon and Mayo has been great. It is a big discission, take your time. These boards have helped me, even with easing some anxiety.

Wow it's so nice to meet other women who are patients of Dr. Israeli's! His attention to detail is amazing.........at the time of my abdominal hernia repair (which he did with Dr. George DeNoto, the head of laproscopic surgery at North Shore - both of them have written a paper about their new hernia repair technique which will be published in the Journal of Plastic Surgery soon)..........Dr. Israeli was marking up my abdomen, but he couldn't stop talking about what he'll be doing next to fix my foob.........this is where his expertise really shines. He won't be satisfied until everything's perfect. I can't wait to get my new nipples done - but first I need 3 more weeks to recover from the hernia surgery. BTW - my tummy is FINALLY flat, hallelujiah!
-
Hey Marybeth,
I am having my exchange surgery with Dr Israeli at North Shore Manhasset on August 17. I just had my pre-op appointment with him this morning. He was great as usual, and I'm comfortable that we picked out the right implant for me.
I'll probably run into you at Dr I's office for our postop appointments - I'll let you know when they are, it would be nice to say hello face to face.
And obviously I was wrong about him only operating at NSUH. I know one of my doctors was that way - it must have been Dr Beg, the breast surgeon (I had my mastectomies and tissue expander surgery at the same time, so 2 sets of surgeons.)
-
I just came from Dr. Israeli's office - too bad I didn't make plans to meet some of his other patients. Unfortunately, he had to put a drain back into my stomach - 350cc of fluid was removed just in his office! My tummy feels MUCH better now..........the poofy sloshiness is gone. Hopefully he'll remove the drain by the end of the week.
-
I hope you feel much better and heal like super woman!
-
Well ladies you have been fabulous with your wealth of information. I have finally made up my mind and I have chosen to go to New Orleans and have Dr. Robert Allen do my DIEP. Here's to facing down fear and finally making a choice. I couldn't have done it with out all of you. Hugs and Love
-
To Dr. Israeli's patients ---
Isn't Bella the best too? She's so cheerful and competent.
-
Bella is the BEST! For the first time in my life, when a nurse said "this won't hurt" she wasn't lying! I felt absolutely NO PAIN at all when Dr. Israeli put in the new drain - I totally trust Bella!
-
Omahagirl,
Best wishes on your upcoming DIEP with Dr.Bob Allen! He is fabulous, very caring & does amazing art work. I sent you a PM and hope to hear more from you.
Take care,
Lisa

I love Bella! She is the best. Such a great nurse and person.
I had my exchange last Monday. So good to get rid of the expanders. I didn't realize how uncomfortable they were until they were gone,
I want to wish lifegoeson good luck tomorrow.
I have an appt. with Dr Israeli on Tue. the 18th , maybe I will get to meet some of you one day. As Ann said her and I have become great friends. She is wonderful, she has helped me more then she will ever know.
Take care everyone, Marybeth
-
Isn't it wonderful when the support staff (nurses, office) are so caring? It can make all the difference in how you feel.
Lisamg, all your posts sound like you are a doctor, yourself, or have close involvement with them, esp. Robert Allen. ???
-
LISAMG is a nurse and an amazing resource--she really keeps up with all the research, especially regarding herediary breast and ovarian cancer, the types of surgeries offered, and some of the best docs in the NYC area. Take a look at the FORCE (Facingourrisk.org) discussion boards and you'll see some more of the stuff she knows and some links she posts to the latest research. Thanks Lisa!!
-
I just scheduled a consultation appointment with Dr. Smith, so my reconstruction process has officially begun!
-
Yeah Nancy, I know it feels really good to get the ball rolling. Who is Dr. Smith and what have you chosen for recon?
-
Lifegoeson,
How you feeling after your exchange surgery??. I just had my nipple reconstrution surgery with Dr. Isreali today. Everything went great. I haven't seen them yet but, the anesthosiolgist and the nurses said that he did a great job. So I'm very happy.
Ann

Hi,
I'm feeling pretty good. I'm only taking Tylenol now. I was uncomfortable the first night but then OK. I got to look at my new boobs for the first time Wednesday and they look good!
How was the nipple procedure? Which type did you get and did you do it under local in Dr Israeli's office or in the hospital. He says I can do it under local in his office, which sounds perfect to me, no more anesthesia.
-
Lifegoeson,
Glad to hear your feeling better. As the swelling goes down you'll look even better.
Dr. Isreali did what he calls a modifed skate flap. No skin grafts. I had it done in the hosp.
I know so many people in the o/r there so I feel very comfortable going there. I also wanted anesthesia because I don't want to know or see anything going on. Just wake me when your done...lol
Be well,
Ann

Hi! I hope you are doing well. I know this post is very dated but I have just scheduled a PBMX with Dr. Beg and I was wondering if you had the best possible experience with him given the circumstances. He has done lumpectomies three times for me and I find him to be a very caring and talented. Please let me know if you have any insight. Thank you
