Wondering about Mother's prognosis

My 80 yr old Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer Aug 08. She had a lumpectomy, but they have now found more lumps in the breast and spots on her lung. Docs propose another lumpectomy and monitoring of lungs.

My father died of cancer last year and we were given frank information about his expectations and were told when they could do no more for him, so we had time to prepare.

Are we facing the same with my mother, or do people recover from the situation my mother is in? She is sprightly and active, but small and frail-looking. (oddly, not a contradiction!)

thanks.

    HI there,

My mother is 72, she was diagnosed 22 months ago, stage IV, metastized to the spine, then to the brain. I am also still wondering if there is a cure or not.

I have asked if they can give us a time so we can prepare also, they apparently can't give you a timeline.

Just enjoy the time you have now, that's the only suggestion I can offer.

I was told that once breast cancer travels to another part of the body that it is not curable by current medical techniques.  That being said, I personally know someone who lived 14 years with Stage IV breast cancer because they held it at bay with a variety of medications.  I have heard of people living even longer.  That may be why the doctors aren't giving you clear cut answers.  That in my idea of a good doctor.  Only God knows when we will die and there are new discoveries all the time.  Enjoy your mom every day and ask the doctor/doctors what the treatment plan is for your mom.

    God bless.
