Karen,
Sometimes it just helps to vent to others who have been there. Everyone is different, but I can tell you some things that helped me. My PS gave me scripts for pain pills and muscle relaxers. In the beginning I was just using the pain pills to get me through the expander pain. Since the PS office was skimpy on refills, I talked to one of the nurses about it and she suggested I try to rely on the muscle relaxers more. When you stop and think about the process it makes sense that the expander is under the muscle, you need to rely on muscle relaxers to help with the discomfort and spams.
When I started using muscle relaxers more and pain pills less it did help. I also didn't have to deal with all the side effects from pain pills. I tried to use more Extra Strength Tylenol. Don't get me wrong............I still used Norco especially just before fills.
I agree mornings seemed to be the worst, I got a body pillow and used it to get more comfortable at night so I could sleep more toward my side. I still use the body pillow, it has become a good friend.
Hang in there and remember you are loved,
Paula
-
Hi Paula,
Thanks for the kind words and the advice, I"m going to try a body pillow. I'm also going to try the muscle relaxers. My PS only filled 40 cc's today and woo hoo he wrote me a note to go on sick leave until the exchange surgery. Now I won't have the added stress of having to get to work and struggle through the bad days. He seems to think that my exchange will be in early October. So exciting. I forget what normal feels like, LOL.
I think that having this venue to vent helps alot. Everyone knows what you're going through and everyone is smiling through the pain. I thik that all of these women are so brave and courageous. I feel so lucky to have the support of all of you.
Much love
Karen

P.S. I don't know if you can see my profile pic but it says "excuse our appearance we are under construction". I love it!!! Makes me laugh!

Hey Sandy.
It wasn't as bad as last time but he only put in half the amount. I feel the tightness starting to build though, LOL. Kind of like a pressure cooker!
I have to say though, Pamela Anderson and Dolly Parton better look out, LOL. I will try and post some pictures in the next few days.
-
Karen- Glad this fill was a little better for you. I wish I could have five dollars back for every minute aI spent worrying about something that turned ouot better than I thought. Do you stretches tonight, and take the meds. Also, wrm baths helped me manage. Good luck.
-
Thanks 4greatkids,
I'm all about the long hot showers.
xo
-
Good Karen! I think that will really help! Take care!

Karen,
I also had an under construction t-shirt, but my favorite t-shirt is the one I got after my exchange. It says : No they're not Real, the real ones tried to kill me ! Sometimes you just have to laugh at it !
So glad you did better today, be good to yourself. I'm happy that you got a break from your job, it will make this alot easier to deal with. I was lucky because I am a triage nurse a casual float. I work for other nurses when they want time off. My clinic was so supportive, I was gone from work from end of June '08 until end of Dec. '08.
One day at a time, as corny as it sounds that is it. Sometimes a morning at a time, but this to shall pass. I used to think about getting back to normal, but I think of it as my "new" normal.
Relax, take care !
Blessings to you
Paula

Hi All!
Talking about the "New Normal" not sure how many of you subscribe to Medscape, but yesterday they presented a discussion on the "New Normal" by medical professionals and a cancer survivor. I found it very interesting, although that doesn't necessarily mean I agree with all their perspectives!
Perhaps some of you would be interested in how some in the medical community considers "Life After Breast Cancer Treatment" to mean! Click on the below link to listen to their discussion...it is a little over 30 minutes. I hope you find it imformative.
God Bless!

Hey Nebraska I love the sayings on your tshirt. Did you have them printed like that or did you buy them already done? I would love to have some like that.
-
Sandy,
There is a web site www.cafepress.com in the search bar type breast cancer or breast cancer reconstruction. You'll find so many different sayings, it will be hard to chose. I had a good friend that was diagnosed 3 months after I was so I even bought some for gifts
)
Enjoy this site they have something for everyone. I first found it looking for Autism things......
Paula
-
Paula, thanks I went to the site and already ordered a shirt. Autism? We had a dear granddaughter that was diagnosed with autism shortly after she took her 1 yr vaccination. She was perfectly normal until then. Needless to say life was a whirlwind after that. Unfortunately she turned into a runner and ran in front of a semi when she escaped from her other grandmother's home. It could have very easily happened while on our watch. She was only 6 and the love of my life. That was almost four years ago. I sure do miss her. Sorry to get off track.
-
LOL, I love that shirt too, I'm waiting for my exchange surgery to get it. I'm going to check out the website now. I found mine on www.zazzle.com. I typed mastectomy into the search engine.
I hope you ladies are fast asleep (those in the same time zone as me). This fill today has left me unable to sleep tonight. Harder to breath when I lie down so I thought I would catch up with my emails.
Have a great morning
-
Sandy,
Glad you found the web site, they have so much to choose from. Yes autism, I have a Grandson that will be 8 in Sept. He was diagnosed before age 2 with Asbergers. He has been getting treatment since then. He has done so well he went to 1st grade with no IPP in place. He will be starting 2nd grade soon. We have been very lucky to get the help he needed as quickly as we did.
Enjoy the web site...........sometimes we just have to laugh so we don't cry.
Have a great day,
Paula
-
Sandy,
What a sad story, I'm so sorry for your loss
Karen
xo
-
Nebraska, there are so many autistic children any more. More and more progress is being made for treatment.
Thanks for kind words Karen. I guess I was just pretty down last night. Not looking forward to my surgery and getting drains reinserted tomorrow. One of my favorite saysings is " And this too shall pass".
-
Sandy,
So sorry about your Grandbaby, I know how hard it can be to have a runner. I have a daughter that is 31 and she has a seizure disorder since she was 13 months. She is like a big 2yr old, and has always been a runner. Since my 2nd daughter was just 2 1/2 when her sister was born, and was raised with a child with special needs I think it helped her identify problems with her son.
The longer I have been diagnosed with BC, the more I hear about others that have it. Autism seems to be the same way. It's a small world, isn't it ?
Sandy, I know just what you mean about not looking forward to surgery. I was the same way this time. Luckily I didn't have to have drains this time....... The last two surgeries I had before this one the drains were the WORST part of the whole darn thing ! Oh how I hate the drains! I had felt so much better the past couple of months I dreaded starting over, recuperating from another surgery. Hopefully this is the last
My mantra this past year has been, "we'll be fine" I still use it occassionally. I will be thinking of you tomorrow, and saying some prayers for you. What will be done tomorrow ? your exchange ?
Best of luck for speedy recovery,
Paula
-
I know what you mean Sandy, the drains were the worst part for me. How are you feeling? Why did the drains have to go back in?

Hi Ladies,
I just thought I'd share my good news and let you know that there is light at the end of tissue expander hell. Yesterday was my exchange surgery. I was sooo nervous. I don't know why. I have hated the bricks from day one. When I woke up in the recovery room and they said you're done, I immediately put my hand to my chest and felt softness. That was the most wonderful feeling. It's weird today because I am sore under my arm pits. I think my arm pits are wondering where the coconut shells went!!
Also ladies, I had a very easy time of it. I have not taken a single pain pill. My pain level yesterday was literally a 0, and today it's maybe a 2. That's very unusual for me. When I woke up from my BM, my pain level was a 25, and some of my fills weren't much better!
So, I want you all to have faith. You can get through this. I never thought I could. I did so much complaining during my filling period. I also had my unveiling today and they look great.
Hope you all are having good days. God bless you all..
-
That's wonderful Denise, I'm so glad this is behind you. Take it easy, don't rush yourself. Thanks for the update, I am so, so, happy for you !
Paula

That's great news 4greatkids! I"m so happy for you. That gives me hope.
I'm so happy for you. i bet you can't stop touching them.
Thanks for sharing the great news
Karen

YAHOOOOOOOOO DENISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is great to hear! I am looking forward to mine on the 26th! Can't come fast enough!!! I hope you continue to heal pain free!
-
Wow, I am so glad to hear that your surgery went fine and absolutely great news that you love your new foobs. Your story is amazing and gives us hope and not to worry because we will get there when the time is right.
I had my reconstruction on 4/30 and my ps told me today that I will have two more fills to go. After that he told me I have to wait at least two months for the exchange. If this is true, I am thinking my exchange is somewhere in November of this year which is at least 7-8 month process. I am running out of patience.
My question to everyone is how long did it take from the time of reconstruction to the final exchange not including the nipples reconstruction?
Take care and love you all.
-
It took longer than I thought it would, I guess I am a product of the instant gratification age. I had unilateral mx July 3rd 2008, with TE placed & 100 cc's to start. I had regular fills every week or so and then had to wait I think it was 4weeks. I filled to 550 -600 cc's and had my exchange surgery on Nov. 3rd. I thought that I could finish up by years end thinking I wouldn't have to spend another out of pocket deductible................wrong. My PS wants the exchange to have at least 4+ months to settle in.
My next step was a lift to the right with nipple recon on the left with tissue from the right. I could have had this in May sometime, but I had my mammo scheduled for May, and follow-up with my Oncology Surgeon. I also had alot of plans with my Kids and Grandkids so I didn't want to be back on restricions during May-July.
So on Aug 10th, I had my lift and nipple recon. Everything seems to be going well, if so this should be my last surgery Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!
I know this seems to take so long............... I can remember how impatient I was, I just wanted to get that stupid TE OUT !! It will all be worth it soon. Hang in there !!
Blessings,
Paula
-
Celine,
I had my TE's put in at the time of my Mx.April 2009. Then I had to have radiation, so I waited for fills. The fills will start up again on August 24th.
. I will have to wait 9 months from the time my radiation ended July 6th to have my final implant. That puts me around April-May of 2010! if all goes well. So patience has become my best friend. If there is one thing you learn on this journey, it is that you are not in control, neither is the doctor. No one is. It is always a wait and see situation, for everything. So we wait. And we see. You'll need to find a good supply of patience..it does no good to run out of it.. Hang in there,
JUDY
-
Very Good advice Judy,
Your wait makes mine seem like nothing. I love your picture, that smile is priceless.....
I have a very good friend that had bilat mx last Oct '08 had expanders, fills, radiation, study drug X 8 months and should have her exchange this Oct-Nov.
I thought I had just had my last surgery. BUT not so fast this am I have some tissue that doesn't look the best on my lift side. I have small blisters, and color not as good as rest of the area.
One step forward maybe two back ? I sent a picture to my son in San Antonio that is a Dr. Since I couldn't get through to the answering service line for my PS. (We had storms this am) My son said it could wait until Monday am but I should call them then. Now EVERTHING goes through my mind. Curses.............
Blessings everyone,
Paula

Paula:
It's just another little turn in the road. You know this is the scenic route.
Sorry you have to wait.. Hope it turns out to be nothing...JUDY -
Thanks Judy,
me too............
Paula
-
Judy, you are awesome. I am so blessed that you gave me the reason to believe that patience is the answer to all this agony. I have the patience but I lost it because I didn't understand what I am dealing with. The first time I saw my PS, he didn't explain to me how long this process takes. I should take this one day at a time and go with the flow. Love you all. Take care and thanks again Judy.

Well, I'm home from the hospital again. Had my left breast TE removed yesterday and cleansed and the area drained and cleaned with an antibiotic solution and then two drains were inserted. I did have some unusual pain actually more so than with the original MXS. I was home 2 hours when I noticed blood and when I opened my blouse my breast area had swollen to the size of a soccer ball. This was so frightening. We called the PS answering service and told them we were off to the ER. PS had to do surgery on me again at 2:30 AM. He drained over a pint of blood from my breast. I evidently had a vein that bled. Don't get me wrong- I have a wonderful PS. He is outstanding and it is just one of those freak things that happen. I got home around 5 PM tonight and actually feel pretty good. My husband is exhausted and has been in bed for a couple of hours. I do get pretty down and discouraged at times but I am determined to finish this. I have to learn patience as I have never really been a patient person. Thanks for all the support.
