Timeline normal?

I was diagnosed with IDC in left breast on July 8th.  Sent for scans on July 17th.  Results of the scans showed two areas of concern. 1.  Something in the neck and 2. a shadow on the chest xray.  Assuming those two areas were "nothing" a cat scan of the neck and chest was scheduled for July 28 to be sure and a lumpectomy and sentenel node biopsy were scheduled for August 3.  Well the "just to be sure" cat scan showed three problems. 1. A tumor in the Right Paraphryngeal Space (behind the throat) 2. An enlarged lymph node under left arm and 3.  a suspicious spot on the right breast.  Surgery postponed!  Saw an ENT on August 3rd who confirmed turmor behind throat.  He said I can deal with that two weeks after lumpectomy. He said it is an incidental find and is NOT cancer but that it is large and must come out.  I am still waiting for the radiologist to read the cat scan regarding the enlarged lymph node and spot on the right breast.  He is on vacation for two weeks. The surgeon will not reschedule surgery without the report from the radiologist.  Is all this waiting normal?  My biopsy was July 1st with the "official" diagnosis on July 8th.  It is has been over a month.

I had my mammogram in mid-August of last year, was diagnosed in early September and by the time I had all sorts of tests, etc. and got a second opinion,I didn't have my lumpectomy until late October. Then had to have a re-excision, and that wasn't til mid-November. Didn't start radiation until the very end of December. I thought there would be a tremendous rush to get all of these things done ASAP, but evidently a few extra weeks here and there is not considered a big issue!

I would ask if there is another radiologist that can read the scan.  Seems odd that there is only one radiologist in the department?  My husband works in hospitals and he deals with many radiologists and never has he been to a hospital where there was only one person there to read the scans.

In any case, waiting a month or so before you start treatment usually doesn't make a huge difference unless you have a high grade cancer.

I was diagnosed 12/30/08.  I did chemo first and didn't start that until February 09.  After chemo waited 4 weeks before lumpectomy.  Starting rads 6 weeks after lumpectomy.

So basically I was diagnosed a month before I started any treatment.  It takes time to have the scans done, etc.  Better that you know everything ahead of time and that you get all of your scans prior to starting treatment.

Hi Helen~ Im sorry that you have to join us here, but glad you found this site,I was dx in december of 08 and did not have my mx till i think about the end of march and didnt have chemo till may, i had prior plans  to go to hawaii before i was dx, and had an ifection in my lower teeth that onc wanted me to get fixed before i started chemo, so by the time i took vacation, teeth done and all the test it was awhile before chemo, i was worried like you but they didint seem as concerned as i was. I also had a lump in my neck by my throat 2 years ago and had it removed it was NOT cancer, I hope that this is the case for you too, I know you must be so worried right now, and the waiting is the worst, you would think that there is more than one radiologist have you called to see if there is and if someone else can read the reports so you dont have to wait so long?? I hope that all your tests come out good, if they dont, we are all here to support you, and answer all your questions and concerns, you will be in my thoughts and prayers((((hugsssss)))

    angel hugs

Hi helen--I was dx in October of 08 and didn't have mx until December.  However, they did press me to have chemo no later than 3 weeks beyond mx., and rads no later than 3 weeks after chemo ended.  Some of the women had rads and chemo the same time-  a new tx style that seems to be around more lately.  I think for the most part, tx depends on the individual , though there is a general mainstream tx for all of us.....A couple of times, I told docs, techs, nurses and such I would wait for results right then and there because I couldn't stand waiting and then dealing with the phone chase.  For the most part, everyone was okay with that.

The waiting is the worst!  And no one else seems to take it all as seriously as you do :(

Hang in there... pretty soon it will all fall in place and you won't believe how fast it all went in retrospect.

I am so sorry you are here, and although the wait is horrendous for all of us, I find your "waiting" period, based on the reading of your scans to be intolerable.  How can it be that there is only one radiologist - I have never heard of this.  He goes on vacation and people's futures are put on hold?  I would get my scans and go elsewhere.  Just my opinion.  I wish you all the best.

I think they don't rush things through as much unless you have a high grade tumor.  Mine was a grade 3, so from biopsy to surgery only took 2 weeks, but had it not been aggressive my doctor said it is not uncommon for a month or so to go inbetween diagnosis and surgery or treatment.  You didn't mention what grade yours is.  Check your pathology report. This may be why they are not too concerned.  Most cancers grow very slowly.
