Hi

I was  operated for ducal carcinoma in situ  with no nodes involved.,Mastectomy was performed on me.But now my pathology report indicates IDC with<.5cm intensive invasive ductal carcinoma grade III. previously my oncologist was suggesting Harmon therapy but know he feels a strong dose of chemotherapy. Can somebody suggest that why strong therapy is required for a tumer size <.5cm. with ER +ve,PR -ve,CerbB2 -ve.with no nodes involved . Even the margin is more than 2 to 3 cm.Somebody with similar diagnose pl. advise I am quite disturbed.I am 45 yrs pre menopausal, with uterus removed 3 yrs ago. ovaries are intact and are functional.

My diagnosis was somewhat similar to yours. I had IDC and DCIS. My tumors were a little bigger but still stage 1. Both were grade 3. I had bilat mast (the other side was prophylactic) and chemo; I now take Arimidex. Did your doc offer the OncotypeDX test? That test is specifically designed to predict whether chemo will be beneficial for people like us. My score was high so there was no question that I should have chemo. I suggest you ask your doc the reasons he is recommending chemo and also ask for the OncotypeDX test. Also, your doc can run a report on the Adjuvant Online system and give you charts that can help with this decision. The OncotypeDX test is the best, though, because it is based on your own cancer cells. Good luck, and don't panic if you need chemo. You will get through it and others will be here to help.

I agree about getting the OncotypeDX test. I also would suugest getting another opinion before doing chemo for anything under 1cm.

I see you're in India. Other people have posted that they can't get the test done because they live outside the US. There's only one company that does it. You may want to call the company and ask if there's a way to get it done (get the phone number at www.oncotypedx.com).

could age be a factor?  Under 40 they treat more aggressive.

It's your age and the grade 3.  I hope you can get the oncotype dx test.  The laboratory is Genome Health.  The test is expensive, almost $4000 US, but many insurance companies cover the cost.  The analysis of your tumor tells how likely it is that you will have a recurrence within 10 yrs of original diagnosis.  I wish you the best in your treatment.
