Thanking God for Herceptin!!

I shared this on the Stage IV forum but will post it here for the benefit of the Her+ sisters.   I had a Pet scan yesterday and it came back clean.   So, I have been NED now for 14 months!   My original diagnosis included liver and bone mets.   My oncolgoist has been pretty aggressive.  Six cycles of TCH plus Zometa.  I will be on Herceptin for life.   Added Tykerb in February.  Also since my ER was just 5 percent positive, my onc threw in Tamoxifen just in case.   6 weeks of radiation and a boat load of supplements.    I have taken supplements and antioxidants right from the start and it has served me well.    Chemo ended last August 14 and now I just continue with Herceptin/Aredia/Tykerb/Tamoxifen and life has been VERY good.

So I thank God for Herceptin.   Without it, many of us would have so much worse of a prognosis.  Tonight I look at my yucky fingernails and drippy nose in a whole new light.

Just thought I would share with you ladies.

Jennifer

Congrats to you Jenn for the wonderful report! I wishing you nothing but NED reports forever! Herceptin for me, is the drug that keep my worry about recur or mets to a manageable level. And I needed to be reminded of your new light toward the drippy nose. Today, I was not looking at Herceptin very fondly as my nose is so sore from my having to dab it constantly. Thanks for the reminder that the alternative is so much worse.

    God Bless-

I am so glad that you are NED Jennifer! I agree with you that Herceptin is making a difference.

    Best,

Thanks, Jen, for sharing your wonderful report.

I finished Herceptin in April and got an "all clear" report from this summer's PET/CT. Have you watched the Lifetime movie "Living Proof"? That's us - the women cheering for Dr. Slamon at the end of the movie.

had my first round last week (tax / her) and wanted to share something my dutch, male oncology nurse said as he was hooking me up.  as he managed the lines etc he turned to me and quietly said i was lucky to be her2 - i had a great, v effective additional opportunity to rid myself of cancer, an opp that most people dont get. i am so used to people collapsing over / dramatising my her2 status that it was like a miracle - it re-framed the whole thing. a week later i still think 'hey, you lucky thing'. it set such a positive tone for the months ahead and is such a great example of looking at things outside the box.

    leslie43,

You have every reason to be optimistic. Being Her+ use to be not so good. with Herceptin...us Her2+ gals have the best prognosis.

My onc nurse told me the same thing while I was getting an infusion one day. As she was hooking me up...she said, " your really..really  lucky."

I just love when we come to the boards and remind our Her2 sisters about our good prognosis with Herceptin keep bringing these stories. For me being 1 1/2 year out I have good and bad days. The good days are like Leslie said reframing everything, the bad days are just worry and nagging what if;s,. Thanks for reminding us of the good news we have.

We need to do this more often.

I just read the post. And I was also on Herceptin. It was approved in 2005 for earlier stage HER+ women. I was one of the lucky ones to be able to get the treatment with Taxol. My infusions were every week for 52 weeks which I graduated on September 12, 2006.

Kristen its time for another happy dance.

I am out for 4 years and 4 months.

Good Luck to all my BC sisters

It is great to hear HER2 positive stories.  When I was first d/x, all I heard was doom and gloom about being positive and at that time, I didn't understand what it all meant.  I know that I am lucky now to be receiving Herceptin.  If I was ever to meet Dr. Slamon, I would give him a big kiss!Kiss

Hi Kim, Sometimes you hear so many stories positive or negative it confuses you, but i wish i had a computer when i was diagnosed.

Is that the DR who found the Herceptin and fought so hard to get an approval?

I watched the movie on Lifetime

Each treatment effects people differently. My experience was a positive one and I'm glad for being here and sharing it with you.

    Good Luck

    Hi Jennifer

I just re-read your original post and saw that you take a lot of supplements.  I am curious to know which ones you take and why - what specifically they do for you.

    Thanks so much.

My husband and I watched the movie "Living Proof".  We both cried.  Even though my onc said I was very lucky to be receiving it, I thought "he's just saying that".  But after watching the movie, I realized how lucky I am.  I just hope I will have good results.

MaryAnne - what part of Nova Scotia are you in?  Cape Breton?  Do you venture to Halifax much?  If you do come into town, it would be great to meet you.

The book "Her2" gives a more accurate picture of the development of Herceptin. The movie was based on it, but they added plenty of DRAMA when making the movie.

Genentech has to be run by some of the biggest idiots on the planet. Thank god there were a few visionaries to push the development of Herceptin along, in spite of management. We are luckier than you know that this drug made it to market.

But I too am glad for it. I'll never know if the AC, Taxol, or Herceptin destroyed my cancer, but I'm willing to share the tributes among the 4 drugs.

Jennifer, congratulations on your long dance with NED!

Another big thumbs-up for Herceptin!  I was diagnosed stage IV at the get-go.  I would probably be gone if it wasn't for Herceptin.  My tumor was growing very rapidly.  I could feel it getting bigger over just a 2 week period before starting chemo.  Like Jennifer, the chemo and Herceptin put me in remission.  Like her, I had liver (too numerous to count) and bone mets.  I had a year of no chemo, just Herceptin and Zometa.  I had an area show up on my hip in March, so back on chemo again.

For those of us who are hormone negative, they're now finding that Herceptin can kick you to ER+ in about 33% of us, which would be a good thing for us stage IV girls - one more weapon in our arsenal!  If I get any lesions that aren't hard to biopsy, I'm definitely going to insist on being retested!  It sounds as if your onc is on the ball, Jennifer!
