calcifications

Hi, maybe someone knows the answer to this.  My mother in laws friend , a woman of about 70, was told she had calcifications in her breast and had to do a biopsy.  She was told it was not cancer, yet they are sending her for radiation. I've never heard of this.  Is this something that is done if you don't have cancer?  Thank you.

    I have had calcifications for years and radiation has never been mentioned.  I wonder if they are sending her to a radiologist for further testing. Sometimes there is a concern that cancer may be hiding in a cluster of calcifications and  tests such as ultrasound or a biopsy may be needed to further evaluate the area of concern.

    No - you do not need radiation if you do not have cancer. .   Tell her to get a second opinion.  Tami

    Thank you, that's what I thought. I'm getting the story through my mother in law, who mixes everything up.  It didn't sound right to me. She told me her friend has no cancer, but they told her she needs 6 radiation treatments. I'm going to ask my mother in law to have her friend call me. Something in this story isn't right.

    could it be DCIS? sometimes people think of DCIS as precancer  and do not recognize although it is stage 0 , it is non invasive cancer.

     maybe?...
