Oh Jackie, my heart dropped when I read the end of your post. Big hugs, honey, and we're here when you're ready to share.
-
Ditto from me too, Jackie. (I'll be praying for you, and yes I'll call when I get there. )
-
I am sooooo jealous...New York and California! The only place I'm going is for a colonoscopy tomorrow.
Just kidding you all, I think it's great and I know you will have a blast being together after all this time.
I'm home today 'prepping' for my party tomorrow...such fun! I've almost finished all of the 'delicious cocktail' and will now entertain myself the rest of the evening by listening to my very empty tummy rumble. LOL
Kaye...will it be Nana or Grandma or what? Being a grandparent is such a joy and I bet you're going to be terrific at it.
Jackie....come & talk to us my friend when you're ready.
Best to all....
June
-
June, hope the colonoscopy went OK! Did you get results yet?
OK, girls, time for prayers, good thoughts, healing wishes, etc. One of DD's friend's little sisters has been diagnosed with kidney cancer at age 8. Already had the kidney removed, and is on in-patient chemo that will go for about a year. Tomorrow is her 9th bday, and fortunately her chemo round ended today so she could come home.
I would go through all this crap a million times over so a child didn't have to.

Hi all... I am being too busy to have a life these days. Not exactly fun... actually I am hating it, I feel life is dripping by and I am not even applying the life lessons that C tought me, letting work and life eating at me! Work is great, but just quite a few layers too busy - it looks like there is no life out of work... and I not only want one, I need one! I need to feel special, and working all the time for more, more, more, more is not the answer. Way too much stress.
Jackie. We are all here for you, any time you need us. Thinking of you, and sending you crushing hugs.
-
Hi Ladies, I've been out of town for a while, and I'm getting caught up...Good Grief, Nash. That is unbelieveable. Truly unbelievable. Is she somewhere where they trust her doctors? Hopefully this will work out ok...it happens. Yes, I will pray for her.
Lilith, sounds like you need a hug. Or a vacation. Or both. Well, i can help with the hug part. (hug). Any changes you might be able to make to make it all work?
Jackie. You ok? Please just post and let us know ... um ... thumbs up or thumbs down. We won't ask for anything more specific than that. Remember that we love you.
June, I come from a long line of "Nana"s, so I put in my request early. Yeah, I'm going to love it, I think. I just wish we lived closer to each other. I don't think I'll be seeing the grand-baby but once a year, if that. So, I'm really bummed about it. I'm just trying to not dwell on it. BTW what were the results on the colonoscopy? I'm assuming "fine"...
Love you girls,....Hugs to DeAnn & Angie, too.

Kaye--yes, the little girl is being treated at Children's Hospital here, and the parents are happy with the care. Thanks for the prayers. I've been alternating praying and stocking their freezer with precooked meals. Don't know what else to do.
And Lilith, it does sound like you need a vacation. I suggest Oceanside in October. Nice weather, fabulous company.
-
Hi Ladies,
Things are okay here. Thanks for all your prayers and concerns. Kaye, when are you coming again?
-
Hi Jackie - we're leaving this Thursday. As in: Two Days.
As in: I'm going to blink and it's going to BE HERE. i better start making lists.(We come back the 10th) I've got your phone numbers - pretty sure you have mine.
I'm SO EXCITED.
(I won't be truly excited until we ALL get to gether, but this will have to do for now.)
-
Yeah!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everybody! Sorry I've been out for so long. For various reasons, I've had my computer not in a good place to use it, so I've been keeping tabs on everyone through my iphone, but it most definitely is NOT easy to make a post using an iphone. I am not one of those texters who can text a mile a minute. I just can't be bothered to take that much time to type something out.
But I wanted to let you all know that I've been thinking about you a lot! Jackie, I hope all is OK with you. And Nash, I just don't know what to say about your friends. How completely lousy. I'm sure they appreciate you making food for them. Those little things make a big difference. DH is doing the Hartford Breast Cancer bike ride this weekend to benefit our local chapter of Susan G. Komen and Open Arms of Minnesota. Open Arms brings healthy meals to breast cancer patients and their families. They recognize how hard treatment is, and they offer a great service to make sure that people and their families get the good nutrition they need at the most stressful times in their lives. So what you are doing to help by stocking their freezer is really truly helpful, even if it doesn't seem like much.
Lilith, I hope you can get a little vacation in or something. I know how easy it is to get wrapped up in it all, but you are right. That's one thing we should take away from our battles with cancer is that we need to take time for ourselves. Go get a massage or do something nice for yourself.
June, hope the colonoscopy was uneventful!
Have fun in New York Jackie and Kaye!
Hi to Angie and Harley too, and hugs all around.
DeAnn
-
DeAnn, tell DH "thank you" for doing the bike ride. That's really cool. Open Arms sounds like an amazing organiztion--they have something similar here that I should look into as a volunteer opportunity.

Hey Ladies
Sorry I haven't posted, just caught up in the day-to-day routine.
Kaye, I'm also Nana and also put in 'first dibs!' We lived about 5 1/2 hours away from my daughter and our first (and will be only) grandson when he was born. This is how we came to move from Charleston, SC to Atlanta. We literally 'burned up' the roads between SC & GA and then just decided to make the move. It was a pretty scary move after living in Chas. for over 30 years. However, we just stepped out on faith...put the house up for sale (sold in less than a week) and came to Atlanta with no jobs lined up. We were very blessed though and glad to be part of his life while he is young. You know how it is today, by the time they are 10, they don't have time for their parents much less Nana and Big Daddy (that's DH). He's almost 9 now and between school, multiple sports, friends, and birthday parties I sometimes have to "call ahead."
Anyway, grab what you can girl because it is a joy like no other.
DeAnn, so good to hear from you...when's your trip to CA? I'm with Nash, tell that man of yours thanks from all of us!
Nash, I've been sending prayers for the little girl....it's hard to imagine a child having to live through something like this. I can only imagine the agony her parents are living. I think everything we do for people who are in these situations counts......no matter how minor it may seem to us at the time. You just keep doing because I know it's helping them...and blessings on you for being the kind of woman that you are my friend.
Jackie, not forgetting about you dear. You and Kaye have a wonderful time getting together and make a really loving/sappy/funny toast to all of us while you're together, okay? On second though.....just let Kaye talk and it will happen I'm sure!
lillith, I'm feeling some of what you're feeling this summer except I can't think of a single reason to be in a funk! Maybe we should both take DeAnn's advice and go get a massage or something!
I'm ok ladies and thanks for asking. Colonoscopy went fine and I had one polyp which was benign, thank goodness. However, I now carry yet another diagnosis: diverticulosis. But I really don't know very many people over the age of 55 who haven't been diagnosed with this. Truly believe this upsurge comes from our awful diet changes and food processing in the past 40 years as much as increased diagnostic ability.
I also had my 6 months check up with the onc. last week. All went well and she has agreed to coordinate my 6 month appts with the surgeon/radiologist. This means that I will see the rad/surg at the beginning of a month and the onc. at the end of the same month. YEA!!! Only 2 visits a year this way and the rest of the time is MINE!!!!!!!
Hope are well and enjoying the summer (yes, even in the heat for some of us) Take care and mucho hugs to all.

Huiah Laydees, (that's "hi Ladies" in New Yorkeez.) We're back from New York and I had the best time EVAH with Jackie and huh Husband. (I'm thinking with a New York accent. It's a riot in my brain. Too bad I can't type it any bettah phonetically....Just think Popeye's Olive Oyl and you'll be hearing what I hear inside.)
Dh and I had been eating our way through every ethnicity for a week. You know how when you see a Chinese restaurant full of Chinese people you assume it's pretty good? We had just done that with Korean, Dominican, Indian, Argentinian, Cuban, Chinese, Turkish,...and these restaurants were all filled with those particular nationalities! and one we hadn't hit yet was Italian, so when Jackie and Mike suggested Italian, Dh said "OOOOH YEEAAAAAH! We get to do an Italian restaurant, suggested by ITALIANS!" It was easily the best pizza we've ever eaten. We had a great lunch with them, they're WONDERFUL people, and absolutely delightful. (Jackie is no bigger than a minute. "Two foot n' nothin" she described herself to me when I was looking for her.) Give me a moment, and I'll download the pic...
And yes, we did a toast to Survival; and we were ALL included. (It was a precursor to the toast we will all have TOGETHER! SOMEday. )Hmmmmmn. Apparently, by "give me a moment" I mean "give me a day and a half."
WackyJacky & katoMato
WackyJacky's dh (Mike) & Jacky. We had a GREAT time!

FANTASTIC! Can't wait to see the pics!

Hi All,
I'm also new here, beginning my first chemo Thursday, August 13th. I was diagnosed in April, had a lumpectomy with sentinel node removal, then more recently had a mastectomy with 8 of 19 nodes involved. Recovery is going pretty well, I think.......with physical therapy in between.
I also was told by someone to carry some type of spearmint, peppermint lifesavers with me to help with dry mouth and nausea? anybody else given this info? or any other helpful hints?
I was also told that I would begin to lose my hair with 3-4 weeks of chemo - I think I'm going to shave it next week. At least that would be my decision and I feel like I have SOME control over things.
thanks for any and all advice!
-
Kaye, you girls are gorgeous. Can't wait for you and DeAnn to be here in Oct.
Hi, Dee. You may have been looking for the "Starting Chemo is Aug 09" thread--we're all two years out from chemo on this thread. But we're a friendly (and obviously very cute) bunch, and are more than happy to help you out.
As far as the nausea goes, peppermint can help, but my nausea was sort of beyond any easy remedies. Not to say tha's how it will be for you, but for me, I had to add a drug called Emend on top of my other antianemic meds.
The hair loss depends on the chemo. Are you going to be on TC? I think the hair loss there does start about 3-4 weeks into things. I had Adriamycin in my mix, and that chemo makes hair fall out after 2 weeks. By all means, shave your head if it makes you feel more in control. It will grow back.
-
Hi Ladies,
Yes, it's true...I did get to meet wonderful, delightful Kaye and her dear husband Terry. It was heartwarming and soooo sweet to hug her in person. I pray we all meet someday. Yes, she was shocked by my new yawk accent!!!! I grew up there and I can't lose it. LOL. I am going to "try" to post the pictures.....we'll see.
Hope you are all doing well.
Hugs, Jackie
-
Ladies,
By the way....Kaye is beautiful. I felt like I was meeting someone famous that you read about and then finally get to see in person!!!!!!!
I think you ladies need to check facebook for the pix. I have NO IDEA how to post them here. LOL
-
You guys look like you had fun!! Oh darn! I wish we could ALL join up in California in October, but I am really excited to finally meet Kaye and Nash in person. I almost was able to connect with Harley when I was in North Carolina but our schedules just didn't quite fit and I was only there for two nights. Jackie, I do get to New York every so often with my DH. I'll be sure to let you know next time we make a visit! It won't be this year as I've discovered I will have about 2 minutes of vacation time left after my October trip, but the clock starts up fresh in January, so you never know! I'm afraid Switzerland and Atlanta and Buffalo are not exactly places I frequent either, but someday we'll all meet in person!
-
Hello Ladies,
Hey DeAnn - How is the October trip planning coming along? Do you know where you'll be staying in Oceanside yet? (You probably said it sometime in the not-so-distant past...but I don't remember. Anything.)
Jackie - Have you checked into your miles to see if you can come? Remember, lodging at HuntHouse is free. We have two guestrooms with a queen bed in each, so you could even bring the kids if you wanted. Oceanside is an easy drive from where we are. (ANYTHING is an easy drive if it's not in NEW YORK.)
Hope everyone is doing well, healthy, happy, all the good stuff - etc.
Interesting note: I just had a meeting with an endocrinologist who scoffed at the amount of VitD3 I was taking. She said she'd never heard of that much being prescribed before, how possibly toxic it was, 1,000 iu was the norm, and asked who prescribed 4,000 iu/day for me. I told her I had done a little research and what I found on-line, plus what i found on this board indicated that was the right amount for what I was trying to accomplish. (Osteopenia Tscore was -2.3, down from -1.6 a year earlier)
She was convinced there was nothing out there but Fosomax, or Zometa and that was that. The Doctor who was overseeing her gave me another option of Calcitonin 200iu/day Nasal spray, so I'm going to try that for a year, but when my labs came back she mentioned that my VitD3 was "high-normal". There was a lot of turnover in my bones (breakdown and buildup) but to keep doing what I was doing, essentially.(She did say to have no more than 3,000 iu of D3 a day...but we'll see. I'll wait till the lab work says "High". It seems like it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. I LOVE THIS BOARD.)
Good night, Ladies.(Hugs to Nash, Angie, June, Harley, Lilith,...and everyone else out there.)
-
Hmmmm, interesting on the Vit D, Kaye. My onc won't even check mine. I was going to ask my internist about it next month when I see her. Anyhow, glad to hear your osteopenia score came down--that's great!
Yes, DeAnn, I was wondering if you knew the name of the condo complex where you will be staying. My neighbors have a condo in Oceanside, and it would be pretty funny if it's in the same complex.
That would be really exciting if Jackie could swing it for coming out here! Fingers crossed!
-
Funny, my onc just checked mine today. No results yet. I also got blood drawn to do the BRCA gene test. I met with a counseler today and decided to do it. Won't have results for two weeks, but I'll let you know when I do.
The condo in Oceanside is the Wyndham, I think? Are we bringing our spouses to our little rendezvous or will it be just the girls? Trying to plan out the week a little bit and DH asked if he should be coming too. I said, gosh, I don't know! I figured I should ask if your DHs were coming too? He had an idea for where to meet. He suggested the Stone Brewery complex. Of course he's Mr beer guy so he would pick that place.
Ooh Jackie, I'd love it if you could be there too!
-
OK, the Wyndham doesn't sound familiar, so it must not be where my neighbors have their place.
Stone Brewery is inland, close to my house. Their food is good. Or there's a bunch of great places by the beach if you'd like to do the whole CA beachy thing. Let me know what you feel up for.
I'll ask my DH what he feels up for as far as coming along. I'd pictured the entire families getting together, but I haven't actually asked him about it yet. Did your DH want to come? Kaye, does Mr. Kaye want to come? All boys are welcome, of course!
-
Howdy, again. Checked with DH, and yes, he'd like to hang out with everyone. So, it will be us and the kids, if that's OK with everyone else.
-
Ladies? I say come one dh, come ALL dh's. Anyone who can make it should come. We went through this together with them all (kids included), we should let them all come and celebrate with us, too! Mr. KatoMato (I LOVE it!) had such a good time meeting Jackie & Mike that he'll be there!
-
Sounds good to me!
-
Hi ladies, I was in hiding for a few days... in Italy. My mom was well enough to be there as well, and I enjoyed going around with them for a few days. Not quite as restful as I secretely hoped - amen - but very comforting to spend some time with them.
We went up to a mountain village were my dad used to go vacationing (or at least went vacationing) back when he was 18...the house his family rented back then was still there, exactly the same - we have pics of the balcony with my grand-parents in their late 40ies, and one could think that even the tablecloth was still the same (I hope not). From there we went up up up in a cable car to a mountain pass - where he used to go hiking, at the time there was no cable car... it was a bit hard on him, as it was at 3000 m high (that would be about 9000 ft), and he isn't a spring chicken any more! We had lunch there, and mom was quite happy too. It was sweet to see my dad all proud as he made it...
So anyway, today is back home, tonight I have dinner at friends, and tomorrow I pick up my little one (who ain't so little anymore...), back from a long trip in the US, visiting her dad and almost step-mom... I am sure there will be stories to listen to tomorrow!!
Also, a little news-flash. I am going to be in Boston from the 11th to the 23rd of october. I am not planning to travel further than that, as in 10 days with jet-lag and my daughter I cannot really hop around like a frog - but just in case anyone has plans for a north-eastern trip this fall...
California didn't work out this summer - but I wouldn't be surprised if it suddenly become on top of the agenda again.
Last but not least: Jackie and Kaye: wonderful, wonderful pics!!! how thrilling to see you both so happy and smiling! such a treat... wish I had been there with you gals.
A round of hugs to all my favorite girls...
-
Hi, Lilith! I'm so glad your mom was well enough to travel to Italy. How is she doing overall?
-
Wow, Lilith - I'd love to go "hide-out" in ITALY! (We'll just have to make the BIG reunion THERE. It sounds like a great time you had. It must have been really nice for your dad to go see those old familiar places. I did that in New York - saw the house I grew up in - it's good to do that. And how great to be able to spend time with them on a vacation. Sheesh, I'd give any body part to be able to spend a weekend with my folks. (I have some I'd offer up FIRST mind you, but ultimately any would do.) How IS your mom doing these days?
And while we're at it, Jackie (Mighty-Mite) How is Ann?
oops. Gotta go. I came in here to look for a tablecloth, and got distracted. (WhaaaAAAAT? MEEE?)
Love youse all,
