Help! Mom's first Chemo was last Wednesday
Her first Chemo was last wednesday and has been okay up until today. Today she is very weak and is starting to get mouth sores. She was running a fever but I think that has went away. Any advise on what to do for the mouth sores and what I need to be doing for her, We are new at this.
Thanks,
Mandy

I had terrible mouth sores with my last three chemos. It made eating difficult. I was able to call my onc's nurse and they prescribed a special mouthwash for me that they were able to phone into my local pharmacy. It worked wonders.

Mandy - I didn't get the mouth sores so I can't give you all of the options that have been used to treat them. I do know that Biotene mouthwash is good to use. I also heard swishing with warm salt water helps.

She should start feeling better soon. The mouth sore SUCK. If you call her Dr they can give you a numbing mouth wash, thats what they did for me anyway.
Good luck to you guys,
Laura

I agree that the doctor's office should be called..especially about the fever...they also have "stuff" for the mouth sores..hugs to your Mom

Thanks to all you ladies for your help. It is awesome to be able to talk with people with so much more knowledge than I... I am so lost right now..

Hi Mandy. I also had severe mouth sores, they prescribed some pink mouthwash, I am sorry i do not remember the name, it did wonders. My chemo nurse told me if the fever goes above 100.4 call the doctor and if you cant reach him take yourself to the nearest ER. I am not trying to scare you but never play around with it saying i wait until tomorrow.
Best wishes
Sheila

Hi Mandy
My mom developed mouth sores also. And unfortunately they lasted until her treatments were done. However, as some of the other ladies said, she was given a thick gel mouth rinse that at least gave her some relief. It did help her. Check with her Onc and don't wait. My mom pretty much ate mashed potato's for most of the time. But I have to say she loved them and still does.
Best wishes to you and your mom. You're in my prayers.

Thanks so much, I just talked to her and told her to contact her docctor see what she can get for them. Hopefully, this wont last too long....She still has 3 more chemos to go. It seems as if the chemo is not affecting her as much as the shot they give her the next day to boost her WBC count.

Hi Mandy..I also had a bad reaction to the shots for the WBC..they might be able to cut down the dosage and still get the results without the bone pain...it worked for me

To help prevent mouthsores - or to keep them in check - I have been gargling regularly with soda water (not tonic water, but soda water). It seems to have done the trick. Hooray for you for looking out for your mother, Mandy. I know I appreciate every bit of help from my daughter.
