I have so many favorite hymns.  One that I dearly love is It is Well With my Soul.  I like a version by the Gaither Homecoming with Guy Penrod and David Phelps, also a blue grass version.

    "Be Not Afraid"

You shall cross the barren desert,
but you shall not die of thirst.
You shall wander far in safety,
though you do not know the way.

You shall speak your words in foreign lands,
    and all will understand,
You shall see the face of God and live.

    Be not afraid,
    I go before you always,
    Come follow Me,
and I shall give you rest.

If you pass through raging waters
in the sea, you shall not drown.
If you walk amidst the burning flames,
    you shall not be harmed.

If you stand before the pow'r of hell
and death is at your side,
know that I am with you, through it all

    Be not afraid,
    I go before you always,
    Come follow Me,
and I shall give you rest.

    Blessed are your poor,
for the Kingdom shall be theirs.
Blest are you that weep and mourn,
for one day you shall laugh.

And if wicked men insult and hate you, all because of Me,
    blessed, blessed are you!

    Be not afraid,
    I go before you always,
    Come follow Me,
and I shall give you rest.

Amazing Grace, partly because when my children were infants, I did not know many lullibys and that becamoe one for me...many sweet moments from good days with that song. I also was drawn to a song by Snow Patrol called Chasing Cars, esp the chorus that is "If I lay here, If I just lay here, will you lay with me and just forget the world"  It was /is special on several levels---me & my husband, me and God. Being held by sweet strong arms, everything would be ok with just us two.

Laura- love the words, esp the chorus (what is with me and the chorus?)

    Praise You in This Storm
    Sung by Casting Crowns

I was sure by now,God, that You would have reached down
    and wiped our tears away,
stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say amen
    and it's still raining
    as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain,
    "I'm with you"
    and as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
the God who gives and takes away.

    Chorus:
And I'll praise you in this storm
and I will lift my hands
for You are who You are
    no matter where I am
    and every tear I've cried
    You hold in your hand
    You never left my side
and though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I remember when I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to You
    and raised me up again
my strength is almost gone how can I carry on
    if I can't find You
    and as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain
    "I'm with you"
    and as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise
the God who gives and takes away

You Raise Me Up - I like Selah's version.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47IXCmqyyA4 with pictures and Bible verses

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0J8yeQcPks with pictures from Rockingham Relay for Life (I wasn't prepared for the tears I shed).

When I am down, and oh my soul, so weary.
When troubles come, and my heart burdened be.
Then I am still and wait here in the silence.
Until You come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders.
You raise me up to more than I can be.

You raise me up so I can stand on mountains.
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas.
I am strong when I am on your shoulders.
You raise me up to more than I can be.

There is no life no life without its hunger.
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly.
But when you come and I am filled with wonder.
Sometimes I think I glimpse eternity.

    ANNE. ME TOO... WOW

I sang this song over and over and over as I was going through 3 biopsy's a year ago... where they COULD NOT numb me... I had to do it  with all feeling. That was the worst day of my life so far... and that song made it so I could drive on through the pain and not make them stop.

    Estepp:  Who sings it?

Another one I like is God Will Make a Way by Janet Pascal.  She uses Isaiah 43 in this.  Your song reminded me of this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsJY48WI3T8&feature=related

Must have felt strange to end up stranded between an army and the sea
They must have felt forsaken wondering why God wasn't all He said He'd be
When your back's against the wall
It's the hardest place of all
But somewhere between provisions and impossibility

    Chorus
    God will make a way
When there seems to be no way
    Forever He is faithful
    He will make a road
When you bear a heavy load
I know, God will make a way

    Bridge
When a wall of circumstances leaves you crying in the night
And you struggle til your strength is almost gone
God will gently hold you in the shelter of His heart
And carve a road for you to carry on.
    So carry on

    Chorus
    God will make a way
When there seems to be no way
    Forever He is faithful
    He will make a road
When you bear a heavy load
I know, God will make a way

(Then she talks with music in the background):

The Bible says: When you pass throught the waters, they won't overtake you. When you pass through the rivers, they won't sweep over you. And when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned because you are precious and honored in My sight and because I love you.

    (Singing again).

    Chorus
    God will make a way
When there seems to be no way
    Forever He is faithful
    He will make a road
When you bear a heavy load
I know, God will make a way

    You Are Near

    Chorus
Yahweh, I know you are near,
    standing always at my side.
You guard me from the foe,
and you lead me in ways everlasting.

1..Lord, you have searched my heart,
and you know when I sit and when I stand.
Your hand is upon me protecting me from death,
    keeping me from harm.

    Chorus

2..Where can I run from Your love?
    If I climb to the heavens You are there;
If I fly to the sunrise or sail beyond the sea,
    still I'd find You there.

    Chorus

3..You know my heart and its ways,
you who formed me before I was born
in the secret of darkness before I saw the sun
    in my mother's womb.

    Chorus

    4..Marvelous to me are Your works;
how profound are Your thoughts, my Lord.
Even if I could count them, they number as the stars,
    You would still be there.

    Chorus

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYP--c2LTfg This is sung by the Gaither Homecoming with Guy Penrod and David Phelps having solos.  Bill Gaither gives the history of the song.

    1. When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
      When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
      • Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
    2. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
      Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
    3. My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
    4. For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.
    5. But, Lord, 'tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
      The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul!
    6. And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
      The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

I think sting wrote this song for his mother when she was dying of bc. I listen to it all the time and it gives me such comfort.

Sting - Let your soul be your pilot Lyrics
    Album: Very Best Of Sting/Police

Download RingtoneSend "Let your soul be your pilot" Ringtone to Your CellDownload Ringtone

Let your soul be your pilot
    Let your soul guide you
    He'll guide you well

When you're down and they're counting
When your secrets all found out
When your troubles take to mounting
When the map you have leads you to doubt
    When there's no information
And the compass turns to nowhere that you know well

Let your soul be your pilot
    Let your soul guide you
    He'll guide you well

When the doctors failed to heal you
When no medicine chest can make you well
When no counsel leads to comfort
When there are no more lies they can tell
    No more useless information
    And the compass spins
The compass spins between heaven and hell

Let your soul be your pilot
    Let your soul guide you
    He'll guide you well

And your eyes turn towards the window pane
To the lights upon the hill
The distance seems so strange to you now
And the dark room seems so still

Let your pain be my sorrow
Let your tears be my tears too
Let your courage be my model
That the north you find will be true
    When there's no information
And the compass turns to nowhere that you know well

Let your soul be your pilot
    Let your soul guide you
    Let your soul guide you
Let your soul guide you upon your way...

This song always makes me cry but I still listen to it over and over, on my many long walks with God. And while I am walking I say my prayers for all my sisters.  It is such a blessing that we have music that helps us to find the words we cannot. This song is for all of you:

Testify to Love by Wynonna Judd

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRk4_yXSA_U

All the colors of the rainbow
All the voices of the wind
    Every dream that reaches out
Reaches out to find the love he gave

    Every word of every story
    Every star in every sky
    Every corner of creation
    Lives to testify

For as long as I shall live
    I will testify to love
I'll be a witness in the silence
Says the words are not enough
    With every breath I take
We'll give thanks to God above
For as long as I shall live
    I will testify to love

From the mountains to the valleys
From the rivers to the sea
    Every hand that reaches out
Every hand that reaches out to offer peace

    Every sinful act of mercy
    Every step to kingdom come
All the hope in every heart
Will see what love has done

For as long as I shall live
    I will testify to love
I'll be a witness in the silence
Says the words are not enough
    With every breath I take
I will give thanks to God above
For as long as I shall live
    I will testify love
    (Repeat 2x)

LOVE THIS THREAD!!!  I have soooooo many favorites... was brought up on the old hymns and love the new contemporary music also.  While my sister was in hospice last fall we listened to this one alot together... song by Amy Grant...

    Be still my soul

The Lord is on thy side

Bear patiently, the cross of grief or pain

Leave to thy God, to order and provide

In every change, He faithfully will remains

    Be still my soul

    Thy best thy Heavenly Friend

    Through thorny ways

    Leads to a joyful end

Be still my soul, they God doth undertake

To guide the future as he has the past

Thy hope thy confidence let nothing shake

All now mysterious will be bright at last

Delight yourselves in the Lord, and yes find your joy in Him. Be known for your gentleness and never forget the nearness of our God.

And, don't worry...whatever is to come...just tell God every detail, and the peace of God that no one understands, will come to you.

No, don't worry...just tell HIM every detail and HIS peace will come to you.

God spoke to a friend of mine at church the day before my bi-lat MX.  Our praise team was singing this song and HE told my friend that I needed to hear this song before my surgery.  She bought the CD in our church bookstore and came the next morning and set up her cd player with the music at just the right volume and just at that time my PS walked in to draw on my chest for my MX....God is so good and HE is all knowing...HE knew that this music would comfort me during this time....and it sure did.  My friend just moved this week to another state and I am so sad.  She blessed me with her presence and she will bless the people in her new community. I am so thankful that she listens to God's voice.  Thank you Susan...I love you....

    ALL MY PRAISE  by Selah

Holy, my God, You are worthy of all my praise. Holy, my God, You are worthy of all my praise.

I will follow You through green pastures and sing Hallelujah to Your name.

I will follow You through dark disaster and sing Hallelujah through the pain.

And even in the shadow of death, I will praise You. And even in the valley I will say -

Holy, my God, You are worthy of all my praise.  Holy, my God, you are worthy of all my praise.

You are seated on Your throne in Heaven and You see all of us down here.

You have promised You will not abandon, so I shall not fear.

You made every star and You taught it how to shine.

You knew my name before there was time.

All this was just part of Your glorious design.

    Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Holy, my God, You are worthy of all my praise.  Holy, my God, You are worthy of all my praise.

I get emotional every time I hear this song.  There were more songs on this CD  (by our praise team at my church) that really touched me......but this is the one that God said I needed.

PS    I just posted this song on my Facebook page.....

This isn't a hymn, but I heard this song during the long wait between my routine mammogram picking something up and weeks of waiting on MRI results, biopsy and then facing a mastectomy.  I wanted to run away rather than face that surgery and during that time found this song "Savior Please" by Josh Wilson.  The music is really lovely and here are the lyrics - it got me through one of the hardest 6 weeks of my life and sometimes it was the only prayer I could pray - I hope it comforts you:

    Savior, please take my hand
I work so hard, I live so fast
This life begins, and then it ends
And I do the best that I can, but I don't know how long I'll last

I try to be so tough
But I'm just not strong enough
I can't do this alone, God I need You to hold on to me
I try to be good enough
But I'm nothing without Your love
    Savior, please keep saving me

    Savior, please help me stand
I fall so hard, I fade so fast
Will You begin right where I end
And be the God of all I am because You're all I have

    Hallelujah
    Everything You are to me
    Is everything I'll ever need
And I am learning to believe
That I don't have to prove a thing
'Cause You're the one who's saving me

    Sandy Patti

    In Heaven's Eyes

A frequent prayer rose up to heaven

A fragile soul was losing ground

    Sorting through the earthly babel

    Heaven heard the sound

This was a life of no distinction

    No successes only ties

But gazing down on this unlovely one

    There was heaven's eye.

In heaven's eyes there is no loser

In heaven's eyes no hopeless cause

Only people like you feeling like me

Amazed by the grace we can find

    in heaven's eyes

The orphaned child, the wayward father

    homeless traveler in the rain

When life goes by and no one bothers

    Heaven feels the pain

Looking down God sees each heartache

Knows each sorrow, hears each cry

And looking up we see compassion's fire

    Ablaze in heaven's eyes

In heaven's eyes there is no losers

In heaven's eyes no hopeless cause

Only people like you with feelings like me

Amazed by grace we can find

    In heaven's eyes

Casting Crowns - WHO AM I

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT7x3VnrqbA

    Who am I?
That the Lord of all the earth,
Would care to know my name,
Would care to feel my hurt.
    Who am I?
That the bright and morning star,
Would choose to light the way,
    For my ever wandering heart.

    Bridge:
Not because of who I am,
But because of what you've done.
Not because of what I've done,
But because of who you are.

    Chorus:
I am a flower quickly fading,
    Here today and gone tomorrow,
A wave tossed in the ocean,
    A vapor in the wind.
Still you hear me when I'm calling,
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling,
And you've told me who I am.
    I am yours.
    I am yours.

    Who am I?
That the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love
    And watch me rise again.
    Who am I?
That the voice that calmed the sea,
Would call out through the rain,
And calm the storm in me.

Not because of who I am,
But because of what you've done.
Not because of what I've done,
But because of who you are.

I am a flower quickly fading,
    Here today and gone tomorrow,
A wave tossed in the ocean,
    A vapor in the wind.
Still you hear me when I'm calling,
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling,
And you've told me who I am.
    I am yours.

Not because of who I am,
But because of what you've done.
Not because of what I've done,
But because of who you are.

I am a flower quickly fading,
    Here today and gone tomorrow,
A wave tossed in the ocean,
    A vapor in the wind.
Still you hear me when I'm calling,
Lord, you catch me when I'm falling,
And you've told me who I am.
    I am yours.
    I am yours.
    I am yours.

    Whom shall I fear
    Whom shall I fear
    I am yours..
    I am yours..

When I was young,we had a bible bus take us to church

for Fun Friday and I still remember this song,

What can wash away my sins,

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

What can make me whole again.

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

    Oh precious is the soul,

That make me white as snow.

    No other power I know,

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
