Grandma needs a new name
What is your "Grandma" name?
My first granddaughter is 4 months old and I'd like for her to call me something unique. Have been trying on "Nanny" because my dear Grandmother (gma) was called that, but it's not really sticking in my head or mouth when I'm with the baby. My sister became a gma this year also, Cathy picked "Cammi", I think that's cute. NO "Granny or Grandma" I'd like to be called a name that does not immediately designate me as a grandmother in the traditional realm of Grandmotherly callnames.
So... What do the grandchildren call you?

Grandchildren are the BEST! I don't have a suggestion for you (except to enjoy her!) since my grandchildren call me Savta which is Hebrew for Grandma.
On the other hand, if they call you that, you'll most likely be one of the few women in Savannah called Savta!

Congratulations on being a gma!!! My SIL picked "honey" for her first grandbaby. Enjoy!!! They say grandkids are the BEST!!!
-
Congrats on becoming a grandma. I just became one 5 months agao and my granddaughter will call me good old fashioned "grandma". I like that. My sister's grandkids call her "Nonna", which is italian for grandma. Perhaps you like that. good luck in choosing. and enjoy your grand!!! They make life beautiful!!
-
My husband called his grandmother Oma - German for grandma - of course - she was German.
My son is single and not looking and I told him when he was 18 I didn't want to be a grandma until I am 50, that's next year!

OH, I'm loving all the ethnic grandmother names.. I thought the hebrew one was something like Bubilla, Boobbalah.. HAHAHA BOOB-Alah, The one boob Granny. that fits, but no.
-
Connie - You are a stitch!
I'm just "Gamma" to my younger grandbaby. My mom is now "Gee Gee", for great grandma. It doesn't seem that long ago that my kids were calling my grandma "Gee Gee"!

Connie, the Hebrew for Grandma is Savta, the Yiddish is Bubby. Bubbelah is a diminutive - when I was little my grandmother called me Leahlah.
It's a good thing my grandchildren call me Savta and not Bubby or I'd be one-boobed Bubby (or uniboob Bubby).

my mother is "Nonnie" to our kids ,,my grandkids just call me grandma
Nonna , I believe in Italian is grandma, so Nonnie was just a coincidence
-
My granddaughter Bella calls me MeMe.
-
aww debbie, that is cute
-
My grandchildren call me Noni............as grandparents my parents were called Mama and Papa.
-
Meme is cute. I've been saying I'm Nanny and she smiles so big, maybe I should keep a two-syllable ending in the ee sound. Gotta pick something quickly. DANG they grow fast.
Thanks for all the input

Shortly before my oldest granddaughter was born, almost 23 years ago, my son asked me what I would like to be called. I said "Nana". That's what I've always been. I have seven grandchildren now, and they all have at least three grandmothers (my kids have a stepmother) and have had great-grandmothers. I am not a great-grandmother yet but I think I will still remain "Nana" when that day comes too. (I'm not looking for that any time soon. I have four grown-up grandchildren but none of them are ready to have their own kids yet!) I was 46 when I first became a grandmother and although I was much too young to be called "Grandma" (still am) I had a lot of friends who were grandmothers at an earlier age. These friends now mostly have great-grandchildren too. I can wait.

So far I am Gran to my precious little 8 month old Bea. My mother was Granny to my children. I used to laugh at my friends who had become doting grandparents but now I really do understand this and being here for this little one is great. Had I not gone for that mammogram when I did and had waited until the next April I probably would not have been here for her so I feel it is a real privilege to have a cute wee lass running our extended family.

I called both my Grandmothers "Meme", when my daughter was born she called my mom "Meme" and hopefully someday I'll get to be a "Meme"!

Grand Nana MeMe. How bout that?? It's so great and such a wondrous thing to see the continuation of our family into another generation. Watching it happen all over again and knowing that these kids are not kids anymore, they are parents and taking it very seriously. Holding little Katie in my arms is the most precious gift ever. Thank you all for the input and
BRING ON SOME MORE GRAMMEE NAMES
-
Connie- what do YOU want to be called? No matter what it is, it will be special because it is YOU and your GRANDCHILD. I look forward to the day my children marry and have children, I will be so happy to be a grandma (at least a prettygoodma), should that be in my future.
Enjoy little Katie, soak up the love that she shares with you; you'll know whats right....it will fit just perfectly.!!!

I tried to get my grandkids to call me honey but somehow they all call me nana. I think they get their own name for you. It just has a way of all working out.
EWB, you are so right and so wise.

My nephew calls my sister "Grammie"
-
I am a new grandmother also ( Yippee !!!) My Peyton Bryce is just 6 mo. old...I am trying to settle on MiMi or MeMe...but I keep vascillating. I met a woman who was called Boppy and I just loved that one.....I am not a granny,grandma..though wouldn't mind Grandmother.....I'll take suggestions too !

My mm is a great granmother of 3 and they call her Mema. to the grandkids she is grandmother. I am grandma to my beautiful Marley.
-
Connie - congratulations of the birth of your granddaughter! I can't WAIT for that day in my life! For years my daughters have called me "mee-mee" - short for Mommeeeee.........and since we all communicate every night on AIM chat and through emails, I've been signing off with "Mee-mee". My oldest (23) said this is the perfect name for me if/when I become a grandmother. My own mother was called "May-May" by her grandkids..........so "Mee-mee" is perfect in my mind! I'm happy to see others have already started using it!
My girlfriend is Greek and she calls her grandmother "Yia-yia"......not sure if I spelled that right. Anyway - sometimes I think it doesn't matter what we call ourselves.........when your granddaughter starts talking, she'll probably come up with something cute and original - so be ready!

-
My next door neighbor's grandchildren call her Bunny........Her oldest granddaughter started calling her that out of the blue one day and it stuck.......

Hello connie,
I'm new. This is my 1st post
. I didn't want to be called Grandmother, Grandma, etc. So, I picked out the name "Nan".
-
I am a grandma in waiting, still, at 62. When I was little my Irish grandmother would come to visit and always would greet me with, "Hello darling," and used that endearment every time she spoke to me. At some stage, I decided that she was 'Darling' and called her that from the time I could talk. So, she became 'Darling' to every one from that time on.
It was quite funny to be standing in the butcher/grocer shop and hear the owner ask, "What can I do for you today, Darling?" Some of the old biddies who didn't know us would look her up and down and you could almost hear their silent, 'hmph' at this familiarity. I know that she secretly enjoyed her local fame as our Darling grandmother.
Sheila.

Connie, have you decided on a name yet?
-
I kind of always expected to be Grandma when I had grandchildren. When the time came, my daughter's mother in law said she wanted to be Grandma because that's what her other grandsons called her and she also said that there should only be one Grandma. We decided that I would be whatever my grandson came up with. When we was learning to speak, he couldn't say "Grandma", he only got out "Amma" - so that's who I am. Since then, I have learned that is the name used in some other countries. He also has two "Grandpas". When he was really little he decided that one was circle Grandpa and one was square Grandpa. Now that he is five they still have those names.

cute story,lassie...I like it!!
-
Everytime I read the title of this thread I picture a rock band in my head singing Grandma needs a brand new name. My brain can be so silly sometimes.
Am curious Connie, what have you come up with so far?
-
Haven't posted lately, been taking a BC holiday. My children also called my mother "Darling". Same story as Sheila's! I couldn't believe what I was reading. Guess it must not be that unusual. She absolutely loved being called Darling.
