Artfull Bras Project

Laura, I am going to put a bead behind and see if it flops or not. I may have to scrap the idea altogether because the pin wheels may be too heavy. Glue guns, electric knives, anything hot or sharp are all off my list. I am known by many names, including Super Klutz...
I like your saying (signature). Made me think the same.
-
Geesh... I can't believe I've been a lazy butt regarding this! I'm still only half way finished with my latest creation. But I do plan to finish it soon.
Have any of you been working on one?
-
Laura: That bra is amazing. Good for you! You must be a sewer and a good one, too. I can hot glue but that's it. Really a beautiful bra.
-
The facilitator of our cancer center contacted the head of the SC group to see if we could have the bras to display at our local Komen Luncheon in September and they said all dates were booked up in September. So our local support group decided to do something similar. Several of our members are making their own version of the bra's to display at the luncheon and the local arts counsel wants to put them up for display during the month of October. I am doing a 'cancer support bra' using the colored ribbons showing support for the various types of cancer and using some wider ribbon and writing the names of the support groups on it for the straps. So far mine is in the concept stage, not gotten to the actual production stage. I am not sure how many are being made but the ladies all thought the idea was great.

kmccraw423 - Thank you! It was lots of fun to make! And - believe it or not - I HOT GLUED most of it. I also used fabric glue.
Sheila - Wow... that's a great project you have going! I would love to see yours - and the others - once they're finished...your "concept" sounds great! Best wishes with it.
-
Looks as though the cheese stands alone... sniff, sniff! lol lol lol
Have any of you girls created one? I'm working on my third one... but I'm reluctant to post my second one because this is a ghost town! lol \
Be creative, it reduces stress!
-
Hi laura: I too wondered if this thread had gone away. One is being created and my fingers are not cooperating too well -- neuropathy. So far, 2 rows of pink ribbons over a HOT pink fabric machine sewn over a well padded beige bra - size 36 DD, found at thrift store for 50 cents. The next planned addition is a row of ribbons with pink beads. Then beads on the straps.
As with other of my projects, I get side tracked very easily. Had to make a bunch of neck coolers for my brother, who is a tow truck driver. and ribbons for the Blessing Scarf project that faithandfifty is doing.
Gotta ask, does the GTO mean you drive one (car)?? I cannot post pictures, so you have to use your imagination... HUGS, Nancy
-
Laura, you are not alone. It seems that since I have some great ideas for the local Arm-n-Arm bra project, I have been chosen as the unofficial chair person. I have written up a list of 'rules' for making the bras and set time lines. We are actually working on showing ours in a 'fashion show' format at the local luncheon in September. The facilitator of our group has a daughter who participates with a local dance squad and she is talking to the owner to see if the squad is available that weekend to be our models (with tight fitting tops on underneath). Then after the luncheon the local arts counsel wants to display them for the month of October.
I have started purchasing spools of colored ribbon for my 'support bra'. Still working out how to organize them on the bra.

Nancy - I bet it will be beautiful! Can you post a pic when you're done? Yes... we have a GTO - turned it into a race car with a new engine (6.1 liter). I race it at 1/4 mile drag strips. 11 seconds is my fastest time so far.
Sheila - That's great! Would love to see pics of them.
-
woo hooo, Laura -- zoom zoom - Beach Boys song blaring loudly!!! I have not (yet) gotten the picture posting figured out -- chemo brain, old age, laziness, and I have a Macintosh. As with me, most is a "work in progress"...
Super project you are working on, Sheila. Anyone else doing some artsy craftsy bra project? IF my friend who was a potter was closer, and IF we still kept in touch, I would have her make me a bra flower pot and/or lamp. Can you envision the cup area lighting up? Me = very weird sense of humor. HUGS, Nancy

I know one of the ladies is doing one with pink satin boxing gloves over each breast and I think she is embroidering 'fight like a girl' across the backs of the gloves for her bra.
My sister wants to do a 'picture' of a couple of houses saying we are like a 'brick house' and we won't go away easily.
My mom is thinking about a victorian style crazy patch quilt for her bra.
I went through some of my quilting stash and found a wide assortment of cotton bias trims and rick rack in a lot of the colors I need. I cut 3.5 inch sections of the ribbons last night and have them folded and pinned in the 'loop'. I am going to work on tacking each one together (to make it easier to place them on the bra). I don't have the bra covered yet in dark purple satin but have pinned a few of the ribbons on one of the cups to determine how many ribbons I am going to need to cover it completely. I am going to try and use a variety of textures on the bra to give it more interest. I also have a strand of pink and white beaded trim and a strand of clear white and pearl beads that hang down about 1 inch to sew around the bottom of the bra (like a belly-dancer's top). I may even sew sequins and beads on each ribbon to cover the stitches holding them on the bra (and to give it a little bit of ***sparkle***. Like I said, mine is still in the concept stage but I am working on the logistics of it. It gives me something to do in the evenings watching TV.
About picts, Photobucket is banned at the office and I don't have internet at home. They may post the pictures on the wig bank website after the show in September. I will keep you updated.

You girls inspire me and keep me enlightened! I love it!
Nancy and Sheila - Your projects sound GREAT! Keep 'em going! The most important thing...HAVE FUN... take your time with it... dabble and adore!
-
Laura, is this a new avatar? you are beautiful.
-
Thanks!
lol Yes... new avatar!
-
BEAUTIFUL...all of them are remarkable.
I'm sick to death of all of the corporate pink ribbon crap, pink gardening tools, pink tennis shoes, pink post-its, pink ribbon everything supposedly for the cure.
It would be much more efficient and humane to find the cause(s) of BC, but then there is no profit for anyone but the victim in that.

My sister has come up with another great idea for a bra. The Charlie's Angels bra. Make a set of Angel wings and attach to the front of the bra. The description will mention the loss of Farrah to Anal cancer and the fight of the other two original Angels from Breast cancer (Kate 1987 and Jaclyn 2003). we are still working on how to make the Angel wings, I suggested cutting out of lace and using the 'stiffy stuff' I use for crocheted snow flakes to stiffen it.
Tonight is the Arm-n-Arm support meeting and we will be working on the plans for September's luncheon. I think I am going to ask if one of the local radio stations can help me with the music part of the fashion show, or a rising senior from Audio/Video class to do it for a class project.

How do I get in on this?...I would love to make a bra for the show!.....Sheila, you make crochet snowflakes too?.....I would love your pattern and if you PM me your addy I will send you my pattern for a snowflake I make..........I wish I could be in NC to see this show!....I am in Alpharetta about 1/2 hour North of Atlanta.........All the bras I have seen so far are fantastic!.......And I do have a couple of old ones I could use to make a statement with .........
-
Hi all, just found this conversation and LOVE the idea..anyone making creative bras now? what are you doing with them? I would love to get involved
-
Lucy, we tried getting the bras from the SC group to display that day but the facilitator for the local cancer center said that the prices were outrageous to get them to display, that is why we are doing our own show. I had thought about going to one of the showings in SC but the days closest to me I had other things planned.
I sent you a pm about my snowflake patterns.

I have one Hot pink padded bra with pink ribbons and sequins. My first attempt, and a bit on the tacky side, but it does make a statement. My other one is a soft silky one with fringe and beads on it. More "classy" and light pink in color. I will be taking them to Pinkstock the end of this month. If you stiffened the wings with cardboard between 2 pieces of the wings, would that make them stand up? They would need to be more solid than lacey, right? Could you use the foam type of craft material and sprinkle glitter on them? the angel wings sound great.
-
Nancy, the 'stiffy stuff' is like white glue and you soak the fabric in the liquid and pin it onto a plastic wrapped covered piece of cardboard into the shape you want it and when it dries it dries stiff and will stand upright. It will make even manufactured lace or cheese cloth stand up straight if allowed to dry in that shape. While the 'stiffy stuff' is wet you can sprinkle glitter on the items to make them sparkle. I use this method with my croched lace snowflakes (using crochet cotton thread) and 3-dimentional angel tree toppers. I am looking for a crochet pattern for angel wings that I think would work for the bra project, the wings I have look baisically like this (><). where I want reallistic looking wings for the bra project.

I understand a bit now, Sheila. You are obviously much more "crafty" than I am... I bet they will be beautiful when done.
-
Laura, I love this whole bra thing. I'm hoping to organize an exhibition of them at one of our local art associations next year.
In celebration of the fact that I'm still here, one year to the day that I was first diagnosed, I made a shirt with ink-jet, iron-on transfers of my blog avatar & my bco peeps who helped keep me sane! Now I can work on a bra to go with it!!

How beautiful, brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for including my name. Mega HUGS, Nancy

Check out the PINKSTOCK 2009 thread for pics of our bras. The first one is mine.
-
Nancy, I saw the photos on the PinkStock thread. it doesn't look tacky it looks wonderful.
Right now I have 10 people signed up to make 12 bra's for our ' Arm-n-Arm bra fashion show' in September. I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with. The names are really creative and my imagination is wondering what will they do to display their name.

Hey, Ladies! Nancy, I found PINKSTOCK!! How totally wonderful those pix are!!! Nancy, you need harem pants & finger cymbols now to go with that bra!!!
Listen, I've been requested to make more Accidental Amazon T-shirt & tanks, so I'm doing it. Not to make any money, just to share. If I make any money, I plan to donate it back to BCO. The cost to make one & mail it off is running about $15. So, anybody who wants one, send me an email at info@kksphotos.com (my art website), and I'll get you the details. I can do all kinds of sizes & fits, so tell me your dress size (i.e., size 12) as well as your other preferences.
Hugs to all.
-
Nancy - Can you post the link to the Pinkstock 09 thread? Thanks!
-
Kathi - Thanks for including my name!

Tonight is the next meeting of our local Arm-N-Arm group and I will get more details on who is doing each bra and how they are going. My sister and I had a slightly different idea for the 'Charlie's Angels' bra. Instead of making Angel wings, we are going to use either the a crocheted angel ornament that I made or some battenburg lace angel ornaments that we purchased. We are going to work on it tomorrow night. My 'Colors of Cancer Support bra' is nearly complete I ended up hot gluing the ribbons to the cups of the bra instead of trying to hand sew them on individually. I think I will add some sequins to some of the ribbons to give it a little glitz and bling. Several women who have seen my bra thinks that the sequins will add that special touch. If photoshop wasn't banned at the office I would post a picture of my creation.
