~* Adios Cancer....Vacation! *~
So.....my husband and I had planned to go on a much..much deserved holiday. Especially, after all this BC garbage. We deserve it. We weren't sure if financially it would be smart to go on one right now...but really when is it a good time?.lol.
So last week we said alright lets do it! We are going to Europe for 7 weeks to visit family and friends.
First destination....glorious Greece! 15 days of of good wine, souvlaki and baclava..*yum* Very anti cancer diet except for the Baclava
We both have never been to Greece and was always a dream, NOW about to come true.
After Greece, we will be in our home countries Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia ( Former Yugoslavia) for the remaining 5 weeks. We have rented a car during this time so it will be great to be able to visit everyone, especially those that we missed on our last visit.
Lots of history in this region and wonderful site seeing's,churches, monastaries AND Turkish Coffee! I am craving some good Turkish coffee.
We leave August 16 & return October 7.
Just wanted to start this thread because I plan to post pics AND hoping some ladies who may have been to Greece before might give me some ideas on what to check out while I'm there!
CAN'T WAIT....ONLY 30 DAYS! ~~ OPA !!!! ~~

Where are you going? Send a pm if you don't want to announce it to the world. I have been to Bosnia and Croatia twice in the past seven years and was surprised at the physical beauty. I understand your excitement at having good coffee. The very best coffee (cappucino) I have ever had in my life was a cappucino at at bar/restaurant across from a gas station outside of Banja Luka. I had great jelly doughnuts too, but the very best was from a small shop in Mostar. Now that I am thinking food, I also remember the pasta with seafood and cevapici and the borak (cheese filled phyllo dough--not sure that I have the name right.) A friend of mine worked in Bosnia for five or six years and I feel fortunate to have been able to visit.

I have been to Greece, Rhodes! The cats come in brown over there! Too cute, hehehehehehe
You will be 'in season' so be prepared for the floor drains in your hotel washroom to be 'over flowing'
if you are in Rhodes. They have a very poor sewage system in most of Greece, you are not allowed to throw ANY toilet paper at ALL into the toilet! I mean ANY!
You will want to have gyros, which are made in open stalled cookers with lamb and beef meat mixed all together on one split. Glorious flavour! There is a wine there (from Turkey really) call Barbara like me! They also have Grand Marnier YELLOW (not orange), we can`t get it in North America (unless something has changed in the last 10 years) and it is like angel kisses going down your throat....sigh
I`ll try to remember more. We went February into March (1998) and the weather was perfect and we were one week 'off season' so we were alone in the Temple of the Grand Masters and at the Temple of Athena! I have 15 rolls of film without a single person in them! Of course, they are film shots, now how to post the pics.....hmmmm.
You will have a blast!

Ohhhh I wish I can take you all with me!!
sushanna.. My husbands parents are in Glamoc but we have many friends in Sarajevo and Bana Lujka. * I will Pm you closer to our departure date
*
I can't wait for some REAL Burek...I'm trying to diet now, because I KNOW when I go there..forget everything. I have finally just gotten a hand on how to make the phyllo dough. I made Burek 2 weeks ago.
Cevapici and Rejznici...oh god..my mouth is watering!! And then the homemade Rakija that my FIL makes every year..(killer)..lol. And then of course..my MIL many kolac's (cakes).
I must say, these people surely know how to be hospitable!
Cities/towns I KNOW we will be visiting include: Belgrade, Novi Sad, Sarajevo,Banja Ljuka,Glamoc, Split, island of Brac and Dubrovinick.
We do plan on visiting Croatia for 7-10 days as it is only a 2 hour drive from my husbands hometown to the coast. My BF's parents who moved "back" recently live on the island Brac. They have many rooms so we are staying with them.
barbe...we are planning on going to an island that starts with "R" but I'm not sure I have to ask my husband. Sewer problems? Ummm..eww. If thats the case forget it we are going somewhere else! I'd like to bring back something for my mother from Greece. She has always wanted to go but won't go because my father is terrifeied of flying. I heard gold is good to buy there? My mother would go crazy for that Grand Marnier!

Probably all changed since I was there 30+years ago. I loved going out at night in Athens and throwing dishes on the floor and relieve stress. If no table near the dance floor--never saw a woman dance, tho, you can get bunches of balloons to pop---great fun.
The Hilton had a bar directly across from the Acropolis--at night it was wonderful to watch the light show that was created to show it, while sitting on the patio. about 5 floors up???
AVOID ouzo---it's like grappa in Italy---tastes like gasoline! and burns all the way donw. Whew!
I was single and with my AF flight crew. I got to model mink coats for some of the guys who were buying them for their wives. The prices were fantastic, but I was near broke, so passed it up.

Isn't Eastern Europe a prime place to get amber? Is this something your Mom would like even if it isn't Greek? Or maybe in addition to something from Greece?
What a wonderful trip!! I just got back from Chicago where I had never been, chaperoning my 14 year old granddaughter at the ALA Conference there along with 9 other kids from her school. It was my reward for working so hard after bc. We couldn't really afford it but did it anyway and had a blast.
Diet after!! Then at least you'll know what your target is. LOL -
The sewers are like that in all of Greece and Turkey too! Don't miss the island for that reason, or you'll miss it all.
The gold is in stores that have garage-type doors that are usually down and locked until the cruise ships come in. Then, OMG, to die for! We actually video'd a store front display and am surprised we didn't get stopped. The small window must have had millions packed in it. Really! Didn't find the prices all that much better, but the selection was amazing. Very creative and stylish. Maybe as you will be "in season" they will be open all the time. There is lots of other stores as well. I bought a gorgeous short cape coat that I wore for years.Gold you can get anywhere. Get her something that you can only get in Greece....IMHO.

Hi Lexislove!
Blundin here....first to say have a wonderful trip. It can't be anything but wonderful. I've never been to Greece. A good friend here goes back and forth to visit with her father in Crete ... they are very nice people.
Also so say that Hollyann has me confused with Vivo. I'm in Italy and Vivo is in Greece. We chat on the In Season Recipes thread. She's a nice lady.
Best wishes to all as always

I believe that a vacation was the best thing I did for myself. Radiation ended on August 27th 2009, and 1 week later husband and I went to New Brunswick Canada and sat on a deck and watched the ocean for 2 glorious weeks. Walked the beach everyday, collected seaglass. Absolutely came home relaxed, 2 weeks later I am back to work. Don't hesitate, treat yourselves ...
you have come a long way baby..............
