Burning Sensation 6 Weeks After Surgery
My mom had a lumpectomy May 27, 2009. They removed 1.8cm with clear margins. But she is still having a burning sensation in her breast where it was removed. Has anyone else noticed / experienced this? Thanks,

Some women have pain and burning for quite awhile after the surger- all the nerves are trying to regenerate.... if it gets red or really tender she should check into infection- but it sounds pretty normal... Tami

Thank you so much...I passed the info along to her. What a learning process all of this is. My grandmother, My mom's mom lost her battle with breast cancer in 1969. My mom vaguely remembers what her mom went through then because so little was understood, so little TO understand. I'm glad I can learn so much from everyone here, pass it on to my mom, and teach my teenage daughter about early prevention and so many other things,

I too had burning: after my mastectomy, I had burning that felt as painful as when you burn your hand on the oven element. It's nerve damage. Pain relievers don't work, not advil, tylenol, codeine, nothing. I was finally prescribed an old-fashioned tricyclic anti-depressant, which worked to modify the signals my chest was sending to my brain. I felt a bit foggy, but it worked. After about 6 months of that, I slowly titrated the dose down, felt the pain come back, went back on the meds for a bit longer, then slowly came down off them. Now there is no burning pain, just sort of pleasant ticklish sensations. I hope your Mom gets some relief, and that she feels better soon. Good luck!

I'm glad that I found this thread. I had a Mast. in April of this year, and been having that burning feeling also, and feels like tingles. I took a rolaid, and beleive it or not, it got rid of the burning and tingling. Its a simple remedy, and it works for me. Hope this helps.

I just wanted to thank you all for all the advice. im proud to be a woman, as i see how strong, much stronger than id ever imagined, we are. Going to put rolaids on the list in the morning.

I also had this burning sensation right in the middle of my chest over my sternum (I had a bilateral mast in March). It was very uncomfortable and my clothes made it almost unbearable, especially at night when I was trying to sleep. My PS said it's caused by the nerves reawakening and that it could take months for it to go away. I'm happy to say that the sensation is gone now, it took about 2 1/2 - 3 months for it to disappear altogether. Pain relievers did nothing for it, wish I had known about the Rolaids!!

My breast felt like a lump of burning coal for about six months after lumpectomy. The best thing was lidocaine pads. They're like a big sticky note impregnated with lidocaine. They don't completely cure the pain but they take the edge off without the grogginess of painkillers. I used them for about a year and they were a life saver. Ask your doc for a prescription and give them a try.

Thank you all for the info. Just had lumpectomy this past Thursday. Felt fine, think I was allergic to the tape for the sterile pads. Ripped off some skin because it was red and sore already so have a skinny scab now. Have been having burning, stinging sensation especially after I ice and it's underneath where the surgery was, like opposite side of my nipple which is also numb all around. I hope it's not infection. Swollen I figured would be but reddish all around the whole breast. Anyone experience opposite pain or burning? Thanks for any help.
