REALLY ANNOYED
I am 31 and breast cancer survivor of almost 1 year. I have an in-law that keeps feeding me all this crap about how Komen is a really bad foundation to be supporting because of its affiliate with planned parenthood. I wont go into the details about this cause I will just get upset again, but I have a question. Does anyone have any info or any background on Breast Cancer Prevention Institute? She swears by this foundation and I cannot even find it in my book that lists all reputable non -profit organizations. Any help would be appreciated.

Apparently the only reason for their existence is opposition to abortion. They [http://bcpinstitute.org/home.htm] claim that having had an abortion is a major risk factor for having breast cancer -- in fact, they say abortion is "the single most important preventable cause of breast cancer." Their page of "fact sheets" has six fact sheets -- all about the supposed risk for breast cancer posed by abortion, all by one author.
I don't want to get into a flame war about abortion here (I'm not expecting flames from you, Fairygurl! but possibly some who are strongly antiabortion) -- I just think, regardless of one's stance on abortion, it is low and creepy to exploit concerns about breast cancer as a cover for another agenda. [According to the American Cancer Institute, extensive studies have shown no increased risk of breast cancer associated with abortion.]

fairygurl ~ Have you tried Googling their name? I just did. They actually are a 501c non-profit. I'd never heard of them, but it appears their sole purpose is to advance the idea that abortions somehow cause bc. I didn't bother to read any of their published "scientific research," which is all along the same theme. But the fact that they would perpetuate this myth under the guise of being a non-profit for Breast Cancer Prevention is pretty offensive, in my opinion.
I hope your question about them is legit and not an effort to get their name out here. If a relative truly suggested that you support such an organization, they either aren't aware of that organization's focus message, or they're being quite insensitive to your dx -- as if any of us could have prevented our bc. are you saying Koman supports plan parenthood? Where can I get this info?
-
Go to Komen's website....their goal is to see the day that there is no more breast cancer...they will explain any relationship with planned parenthood...
-
I googled it too, and along with their site came this link:
http://www.feministing.com/archives/006718.html
Its an article called "Lying Assholes of the Day". (Hey, it's not me, its google...)
I am catching on now, wish I had kept the link to a recent post like yours with some proposed doctor citing whacko evidence - his was that mammograms cause breast cancer. Two excellent posters here (among others) answered, one gave this link from the CDC "Deciding Whether a Source is Reliable"
http://www.cdc.gov/DES/consumers/research/understanding_deciding.html
The other excellent poster was a woman who had also read this other quack's info about mammograms causing cancer, so she never had a mammogram... and then found a lump and had a mastectomy.
And on a tamoxifen thread a poster was quoting another "source" that sounded so impressive and had another tricked out name saying that tamoxifen was bad for you, I forget what idiocy it was bleating...
And 501 3(c) is no assurance of anything. At this point I am critical of ANY web site with 501 3(c) status- it means they want to collect money.
The point is that these are all snake oil sales, cynical people feeding on the fears of innocent people usually for profit, but also for a sick agenda- who are terrified enough of cancer because there is no cure. So they can say anything, especially whatever fits into someone's fears.
I am sorry you have these kind of people around you at a time when you need love and support- and the right information. The fact that it's not listed in your book should tell you something. Good thing you came here!

oh and one more thing on this quackadoodle... google "nun's disease". That's what they used to call Breast Cancer for centuries because so many nuns had it (and have to this day). I don't think they are getting abortions.

Thank you all so much for the info! Deanna, I'm certainly not trying to get their name out there! A little more detail about my situation. The in-law that keeps sending me this stuff is a sister-in-law that is younger than me and also a VERY practicing Catholic. I would get religious preachy forwards from her and whatever, it didnt bother me. But THIS is personal! This is my life now and I'm the one going through it! I was SO very angry when I got the email about the dark side of Komen. I just walked in the Race for the Cure-St. Louis. I had sent out mass emails to everyone that would like to sponsor me. I, in return, got a response back from her that said I should really educate myself with Komen and she in good faith couldn't give to Komen, but she would be giving to this Breast Cancer Prevention Institute in my name. Here's the deal, whatever she wanted to donate to, I was ok with. I wasn't ok with the forwards about all the bad Komen supposedly does and the video she sent me had me and my husband so angry that anyone could seriously have such a conspiracy theory. I'm going to leave a link to this video because it is proof that you can gather a couple people with no proven crudentials, make a video to pass over the internet, and WAM you have a bunch of uneducated people preaching about stuff they no nothing about. First of all I've already had a mastectomy. Why does she feel obligated to educate me on the reasons I might have gotten breast cancer? I have not had an abortion but I still have not had any children. I have been married for 8 years ( by the way to a wonderful husband that has been incredible through this whole life changing ordeal) and just went off birth control 2 months before my dx. Everybody's circumstance is different and to just throw it into a pile that one specific thing causes the breast cancer is naive and uneducated!
www.facinglife.tv/ Scroll down to Komen's Dark Side! I was speechless!
Thanks again ladies!

fairygurl, I am SO sorry your sil is such a... well, I'll just say "jerk" although many stronger terms come to mind! I'm sorry for your husband, too! But so glad that you and he have each other.
I hadn't heard of this stuff before, but I for one am glad to have been educated about it through your question. I think it's appalling on so many levels! As if the only life in the world that matters is that of the fetus! Can't your sil just focus on YOUR life for a minute??!!
Anyway, wishing you and your husband the very best,
Ann

I, too, am sorry that you're dealing with such an insensitive SIL. I guess the only thing you can do is steer clear of her re. any discussion of bc, and when you do see her, make an effort to talk about things that won't upset you. I think it would be a waste of time and far too negative for you to try to change her. If she's young, maybe more years of life experience will make her less judgmental. It's just a shame she's wasting $$$ with folks who probably don't have any credibility to their theory -- at least not that I've ever heard from a respected medical researcher. And, actually, the "nun's disease" makes more sense and ties into a known risk factor, which is not having children, or having pregnancies later in life.
I'll take a look at that video on Komen when I have a few minutes ~ Deanna -
Okay... I decided to try to watch that video while I was here. I only got about halfway through it, it was that annoying. I'm glad they made the point that the $$$$ Komen gives to Planned Parenthood is for Breast Health Services, because I've come across uninsured women on this website whose treatment was arranged and funded by Planned Parenthood, which surprised me, but I thought was wonderful. So I had a feeling that's what their connection is about, which makes perfect sense to me.
Anyway, if you take their ridiculous "logic," one step further (and, again, I only watched about half of it), then it seems like women who have full term pregnancies (vs. abortion) should have much less bc. And we all know that just isn't true.
Yes, excess estrogen probably does play a role in some bc's. But IMHO that group's "scientific" claims are, at best, a self-serving stretch... Deanna
P.S. That insipid interviewer was so annoying, I couldn't finish watching. Sorry ~
-
Deanna, I watched that clip too. Awful. I then looked up the 3 research papers they mentioned. (The clip spelled one of the researchers' names wrong, BTW.) All of those studies were of small groups, retrospective "case-controlled" studies -- they were from 1981, 1989 and 1994. Larger prospective studies since then have found no increased risk for breast cancer associated with abortion.
Interesting -- one of those three studies ALSO found that "women with the highest body mass index" were at REDUCED risk for breast cancer!!!! Also a finding that has been reversed by recent studies!
What was surprising to me was how many google hits I got about Komen/abortion -- this is apparently the "flavor of the month" (or year?) among anti-abortion activists. (Trying to run away as fast as possible from the horrible murder of Dr. Tiller in church in Wichita?) So, again, fairygurl, I'm glad you posted about this, so I can be forewarned and forearmed against any emails from a few of MY relatives who might latch onto this !
-
Well, this is such clap-trap for sure but on the issue of the Komen Foundation, I am not sure that they are really doing that much for a cure. They raise a ton of money and have bc in everyone's face, it's true, but awareness is not the same as a cure.
Please no flames. It's just my opinion. Yikes.
-
Tina, I happen to agree with you! I was never gaga about the Komen Foundation, and wondered where all the money went! (The irony is that I think the fact that local Komen Chapters actually spend money to help women get breast care at Planned Parenthood sounds like one of the more effective things I've heard of Komen doing!)
-
Check out this organization. Breast Cancer Research Foundation
http://www.bcrfcure.org/
This is a fundraising organization that is dedicated to finding a cure. They award millions every year specifically to breast cancer research.
I've not heard anything negative regarding this organization and abortion. Unfortunately, your SIL sounds like someone who won't support any organization unless it supports her view that abortions cause breast cancer.
I have a SIL that I've had some big disagreements with over the years. I've concluded that it's just not worth the angst in my life to argue with her. So I just let it go. Way better for one's health!
-
My understanding is that Komen does not fundraise to provide direct services or specifically for research. They raise $ to give/grant to local organizations that provide breast health help/services to women who might not other wise have access to the care.
