Educate me
I've lurked long enough here to know how much I don't know about eating healthy foods with purpose -- to get rid of this cancer and make sure it doesn't come back. I think I know the basics: organic is good, lots of fruits, veggies, etc. but I don't know why.
I've been working on changing my bad American diet and have also heard some stuff about soy (I'm estrogen positive.) Anyway, please educate me, preach to me, teach me. What do I need to know? Thanks in advance for your patience.

My apologies to anybody who's seen me recommending this book on other threads and is getting weary of me singing its praises, but -
There is a very good book, with very specific food recommendations (and lots of them) called
Anticancer: A New Way of Life
It's by David Servan-Schreiber. He's a physician and cancer survivor who combed the medical literature after his first recurrence to find out what would reduce his risk of future recurrences. This book is a compilation of what he learned.
He strongly recommends home-brewed green tea and a half-hour of exercise a day. Also many kinds of veggies and berries, and dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa. Lots of charts, good easy-to-follow explanations. If you want to know "why" to eat this stuff, you can't beat this book.
He also tells you what to avoid - I was a creature of the "bad American diet" too, before I read this book. It convinced me to abandon my dependence on Pepsi and replace it with a dependence on green tea.
Good luck to you!

Hi Anne,
I just wanted to let you know I agree with your recommendation of Anti Cancer--I am about 1/2 way through the book. I have found it very informative and easy to understand--now just the applying of it! I did break the pepsi habit when I started chemo in Feb, but still have a long way to go.
I noticed you are from St Cloud, I believe I am about 4-5 hours away from you...Sioux Falls, SD. My husband and I took our first weekend away (23 yrs ago) to St Cloud.
Thanks for your suggestion to others!

Hi, Kim.
I moved from Sioux City, IA to St. Cloud when I married. So in the year before my DH and I got married, I traveled through Sioux Falls a bunch of times on my way to visit him in St. Cloud. Sioux Falls is a really nice town.
Glad you are enjoying Servan-Schreiber's book. I so miss my Pepsi, but I just tell myself I want to hold grandbabies someday and keep drinking my green tea instead.
Good luck with your treatment!

Anne, thank you for putting that book in this thread as this is the first time I have heard about the book. Good luck with your good life and I will work on mine.
